Ouch!

So I have a strange ouch. No tearing, thanks to an awesome midwife. Nether regions feel great. Afterbirth pains diminishing. Nipples going ok. This is a weird ouch - on my legs. I have these pink/red patches that the MW said are new varicose veins popping out :(

Sure enough, they have a lump in the middle, surrounded by red tender skin. The whole area hurts - when it is touched, when I stand up, when I sneeze. So I think she's right.

Has anyone else experienced this? I've got other lovely veins from my past pregnancies but they never arrived like this - with such pain. What can I do to help ease the pain?

Hirudoid Cream. It's for inflammatory conditions of veins and can be bought over the counter. Mum had her veins removed in the end but her surgeon recommended it to ease the pain.

I got a thrombosed vein in my leg from my recent fligh overseas. I was told the same as PacRakMG, just apply Hirudoid cream. Mine stopped hurting after about a week but is still there, looks like a bruise with a lump.

I'll have to check that out, thanks ladies. The domiciliary nurse came today and put the fear of God into me - "it might be a blood clot" :o She's recommended I go back to the hosp tomorrow for an ultrasound!

it might be a blood clot, hard to tell without seeing it but it does sound more like a varicose vein. Wouldn't hurt to get the ultrasound just to rule out anything sinister and when that's all clear the haemorrhoid cream will most likely work well, as will ice and keeping your weight off the leg. Sounds nasty though, you poor thing :(

Ice, I can try that tonight. Have sent DH off to get the cream in the interim... Guess I'll head into the hosp in the morning :(

So DH has come home with a hemorrhoid cream instead of hirudoid cream.

Seems to have a different active ingredient. Use it or not?

it will be worse at the moment due to all that lovely excess fluid in your body trying to get out!!
i bet you have been on your feet a bit lately too hey???? All that fluid has gone to your legs- it is so painful when it does. and if you have veins , then they will be really ouchy as they are under more pressure due to the excess fluid!!!
I had i really bad with the twins as i was on my feet next to their humidicribs straight away
so bad that the skin on my feet actually split due to them getting so big with fluid!!!
OK Feet up, heaps of water to flush it through and rest (yeah i know hard)
but you have to give your body the best possible chance to process the excess fluids that have been running around your body for the past 9 months that your body no longer needs!!!
Time to start operation pee out the excess fluid!!!!!!
now go put your feet up higher than your pelvis NOW!!!!

So after spending all day at the hospital and having a very long, thorough ultrasound of both legs, it appears I do have some clotting. It is superficial so not in the deep vein system but the concern is that they may move into the deep system.

I'm on four weeks of self-administered anticoagulant injections, fun and games.

oh no, sorry it was not a better outcome but I'm glad you went for the testing. Hope the injections aren't too awful.

Thanks guys. Dr said it was serious but manageable, I think she just wanted me to not stress too much? Dunno. Don't like the idea of the injections... Might get DH to do it. Apparently it's quite common post partum...

I can help with the shots on Monday's hon. Which one did they give you? How many times a day?

I'd get PN to come over and do your injections. It sounds like she's a whizz at injecting.

ouch hun hugs- i can help you with injections too anytime you want- done quite a few for myself over the years and it doesnt bother me to do them
just holla and i can come past after i drop the kids off to school and do them after drop off or before pick up any day
just let me know how i can help
btw if it helps- get a 50 cent piece and put it in the freezer- put it on the spot you are going to inject so it goes numb!!!
i always found the top of the legs hurt less than the stomach or the bum!!
stomach bruises a bugger for me!

DH thinks he'll be fine, he can try tomorrow and see how we go. It needs to be done around 4pm so not the ideal time for you lot with school kids!!

What a bugger hon. But glad you know what the veins are and have a treatment plan In place - even though its not a very nice one! I wonder If acupuncture would also help? It's getting there that could be tricky.

Make sure that coin is very very very clean first ;) I can't help it, it's the nurse in me!

I can show you some other tips.

4 on a Monday isn't too bad or me lovely because dd finishes 330 and it's a 5 to 10 min drive to my old place so about the same to yours. But the rest of the week I will still be at work then.

If DH gets stuck today give me a Hollar and I'll pop over for tomorrows if I can.

And bring it with you to that class I'm going to in a few weeks if you're still comming. I'll jab ya before I go home ;)

OP I had daily clexane during my stim cycles. Here's my tips:

- leave yourself plenty of time the first few times, it's not something you want to do in a rush
- lots of deep breathes, and I always wiggled my toes to distract myself while doing the actual shot
- DON'T rub the injection site after the shot as this will make you bruise worse

Good luck - you can do it!!

Agree with mrs P on tapping the foot- it distracts from the pain.
Also try to hold the needle steady, while you inject- it's the jiggling of the needle that will give you the bruise.

You will be fine :)

Ocean, you've birthed three babies, run a household, helped organise a business, done all sorts of phenomenal things at work, and these injections are going to be something you're able to do with ease in no time.

And hopefully won't need for long anyway. Hopefully once your body calms down from all your preggo and birth stuff, your veins and legs etc will go back to normal.

And until then, take all the help on offer!

OP clexane is stingy too! I have to still inject it every night. Some nights DH does it. Pinch your skin as hard as you can to jab. You are super awesome and will be a jab pro in no time.

Yeah it really does sting, sort of after the shot :(

DH did ok - I think he was nervous and he did it really slow, I think it's better if it's a bit quicker? Would that be right?

I've instinctively not rubbed it so good to know that's the right thing...

Ouch OP. Only just seen this. Sorry you're having to have the injections. They suck, but FWIW, like everyone else has said I found I got so used to them by the end - and I have to lie down at blood tests because I faint with needles! I hope the clots dissolve quickly for you.

With my jabs- the hurt less if I really pinch the skin.

Quick to put the needle in, but slow to inject is the way I do it :)

To be honest, the technique to cause the least amount of discomfort varies from person to person. I have found most of my patients (only one has ever told me I hurt) feel less if I apply firm pressure to the injection site for about 15 seconds and then quickly remove my finger and insert the needle and push the liquid in. The more you have to inject (volume wise) the more it hurts. Give it a whirl ;)

Well done to your DH on doing the needle though, I reckon it's only natural for a partner to not want to give the injection.
