We got rid of our Changetable after having DD.
Do you think we should get another one or make do with changing on the bed, etc?
I'd be lost without mine! I find bed and floor changes annoying and painful (on my lower back especially) when I'm out let alone doing it all the time. So yes, if it were me I'd definitely get another.
You could buy a cheap second hand one. I use mine more in the early days when they can't roll lol but I prefer it mainly for the storage considering the lack of room in our house!
If there's one piece of equipment I couldn't be without, it's a change table.
We have a king size ensemble that is really high, but I still get a sore back bending over there.
YesYesYesYesYesYesYesYesYesYesYesYesYesYesYesYesYe sYes
And
YES!
For anyone with back issues, definately yes.
i had an unexpected labour complication, that meant i was walking, crouched over, for months after the delivery, could not stand up straight, my stomach muscles were so ruined, could not have managed without one. Other women i have met, birthed vaginally, were standing straight, getting up adn down off the floor with no issues, literally the day after they had delivered their baby.
so i think - it's individual to the mum. And no-one knows, until it's all over, what state your body will be in, AFTER you've delivered.
Lots of people poo-poohed the idea of having a change table, around the time i needed mine most. I'd say most of those women had excellent backs and relatively few side effects from labour, post labour.
whether you have a change table or not, there will always be situations, when you are out of your own home, when you do have to change baby on a floor, or someone's bed, or a sofa, or the lawn outside, because you're out of your house and have to use whatever is there.
A rollup change mat is good to have in the nappy bag IMO. (i once had to change bilby on the FLOOR of a cafe toilet area, as there was no change table in the ladies toilets, for me to change her. (the cafe advertised itself as family friendly, bf-ing welcome here, highchairs available - but nowhere to change your bub).
Yes, you need something! Even if your back is in good shape post birth, it might not be if you slouch over a bed or couch every time you change the new bub's clothes or nappy.
We bought a chest of drawers, and put one of those padded mats with the high sides on top of it, with a non-slip rubber sheet between them. It means we haven't spent money on a change table with a limited lifespan, and still have all the benefits of a change table when it comes to not bending for changes, storage, etc.
We just put a cheap ikea mat on top of our washing machine (front loader) - was great being next to laundry sink for rinsing cloths etc and no extra floor space taken up
I haven't had a change table for either of mine.
You could just buy the top insert part and put it on top of your chest of drawers or similar.
I did consider doing that, but I figured I managed fine without for DS so why bother?
I realise my reply is the odd one out here though ;)
I have used mine multiple times, every day for 3 years. My oldest doesn't use it much now, but I still use it for my 18 month old.
Lots of cheap ones on eBay.
We have a change mat with curved sides on top of a chest of drawers. Top drawers are used for nappy stuff. I've loved this as we're both tall and it's higher than a standard change table. I think a designated change space is really helpful - both of mine have willingly laid still on the change table but have been complete wiggle-bots if changed anywhere else.
I would say yes, it's one of the things that gets the most use, up there with the cot, pram and car seat. Did you use yours much last time? That'll probably answer the question for you :)
Yep, I agree, beds etc are too low and hurt your back. I always dress mine on the change table which is right next to their clothes drawers so I could reach what I needed while being right next to the baby
I couldn't do without mine. Like a PP I had complicactions after birth and I could barely stand up let alone get up and down from a bed or the floor. 7 months on we always change at the change table, I also find it good having everything set up in arms reach
Didnt get one for dd1 but i got a chest of drawer change table thing for dd2 and its great!!!
When she grows older i just need to pull it off and it becomes a normal chest of drawers.
So id say yes too
Chest of drawers we bought had a option of change table top, which is a big wooden piece with a deep space to hold foam change mat and a lip
Around edge to put things. Has been great did not use up extra space as on chest of drawers. We still use it now multiple times a day and DS2 is 3 years old.
We never had one, but I am the odd one out of all our friends with kids, everyone I know got heaps of use out of theirs. We were happy just changing on the bed/couch/floor.
Think I'll looking eBay for one. Don't want to ruin my back. Seems like majority think yes to one. I do like the idea of a mat on top of drawers as well.
Thank you ladies
HAVE NOT got one here either i use my bed .... but ds can stand now so a lot of help .... (new born babies different story but you would get used to being without)
I have a dodgy back, pelvis, hip you name it and I've found there are pros and cons. I've always used a change mat on top of chest of drawers and put nappy stuff in top drawer. Hate the open shelves of most change tables.
Definitely easier when they are babies as you're standing up straight.
Not so easy when they're toddlers and you have to lift them which hurts my back. I tend to only do that for poos. Otherwise it's easier to just use pull ups and change her standing up.
I havent used a change table in ages. We just change where ever. I honestly found ours to be a waste of space. I have a caddy for the nappies and wipes but that is about it.
Wish we hadnt bothered and spent a bit more and got a chest of drawers then got a change mat that sits on the top. Would have been much more useful in the long term and would have served the same purpose as the change table. I find doing all changes on the bed either bad for my back from bending or harg on my knees if Im kneeling!
I never planned on getting one. wasn't on my 'must need' list. but then we came across a dark wood basically brand new ones at a garage say for about $70 (i think it was). so had to snag it up. and now I love it!! we don't have one at mum and dads and I spend a few nights there every month or 2 and to get sick of changing her on the bed of floor. my back really doesn't like it. so am glad we did get one.
I have one on rollers and have always found it a piece of practical baby furniture. I frequently move it around to suit my current needs. I didn't spend much on a new one and I'm always seeing cheap 2nd hand ones in Gumtree or FB buy sell groups. I like the high sides for wriggly toddlers too but once she was about 18 months it was pretty obsolete other than for storage & putting stuff on it. Coming in use again with a new baby though.
had one for dd1 but not dd2. just used the bed/lounge/floor.
I'm still using mine and she's 14 months old. It makes restraining her easier to get it done as its a night mare on any other surface.
We got a second hand dining table for free, and a length of kiddie patterned flock backed vinyl to cover it, and one of those cheapie short book cases ... the book case site sideways, and stores the cloth nappies, perk cloths, and other bits and pieces, sudocrem and talc and whatever all sit on top, and the change mat is one the left side, and the baby bath (for the 5 minutes we used it!) goes on the right. The nappy bag and baby shoes sit in the middle :)
We never bothered with a change table - this table will be heaps more handy, and there's dining tables a-plenty on freecycle (and can be re-freecycled when you're done!).
After justo having been on holidays for a week I am def glad to have a change table! DS crawls off the minute he is nappy free and he is very hard to wrangle to get another nappy on! It is slightly easier on the change table and at least I'm not hunched over on my knees doin it!!
Yes! It's the only piece of baby furniture we purchased that we actually use. We got one with drawers and stuff, so it's great storage as well.
That is a great idea! If only space was not an issue :(
I have got a few on my watch list on eBay now. There weren't any in my area with drawers but if I can get a standard one for a good price then I won't mind.
Thanks again for all your replies. It's been a while since I have changed nappies! :)
Take a look on Gumtree too. ;)
I definitely wouldn't bother. We used it with DD1 but probably only twice with DD2. It has spent most of it's time sitting in the garage. I found I just ended up changing DD2 wherever, floor, bed, etc. Didn't find it hard at all, and DD1 was only 2 so I was mostly watching her at the same time so changed DD2 while I was doing stuff with her, or she wanted to 'help' so it was easier on the floor.
hey love we were in the same situation. The one we had for the twins broke and I didnt want to spend $$$ for something that we wouldnt get use of of. The answer was for DH to knock something up himself. He made a cabinet to fit exactly the space we had. He put a shelf in the middle and I bought a change mat from Kmart and it worked a treat. The cabinet stored everything needed for changes in baskets in it, and down the bottom I had storage as well for things i needed. We put a decorative piece of wood on one side that acted like a rail, which we took off when we had finished using it for bums
When I finished with it, it was used for toy storage in his room!!!
By no means is DH handy, but it was literally 2 sides, a top and a middle- took him only a couple of hours and he bought the wood pre-cut!!
We have now finished with it even for his toys and it is now going to be passed onto my sister for the same purpose
It was a grouse cabinet and I can take photos of it for you if you want!!!
It was cheap to make, fitted to spot exactly and muli-purposed, and better still- it was made with love from daddy!!!!
a one stop table was definately better for me !
HTH xxx
Gee, I've had 4 kids and never had one. Just did it on the floor so that way they could have nappy free time and I could change them safely without ever having to worry about them falling off.
Never had one.
Like Trillian we changed on the floor so if the phone rang etc there was no danger from falling.
I read a post a bout a change table accident on BB many years ago that broke my heart.
