DD11 seems to have blossomed overnight. She has formed little breasts (they weren't there the last time I looked), she's been super moody and extremely emotional. With first AF is it a light bleed or spotting, I just can't remember? Can't believe my big girl is turning into a young lady.

My first AF was a torrent of blood. Nothing light or spotty about it.
It was like a scene out of Carrie.
It really will vary. Some girls will have up to 2 years between getting breasts/breast buds and having their menarche. Maybe now is the time to think of how you might want to celebrate it with her. Make a little pack of comfort items for her and maybe some nice cloth pads if you're that way inclined.
Thanks ladies, Trillian I was thinking the exact same thing, making it a celebration for her, will start putting some bits and pieces together.

My mum bought me a nice little bag to our my things in and to keep in my school bag, just in case it happened there.
I feel the same as you Diane. My DD is almost 11 and you have pretty much described her. I think the idea of making up a little pack or going out for afternoon tea as a celebration is a nice one.
I think the pack should include chocolate! And a lavender wheat pack :)

mine wasn't spotting, it was a definite flow of blood, but not overly heavy. i did get a lot of cramping too, though i didn't quite realise what it was until i saw the blood, i thought i had a stomach ache.
I like the idea about making it special :) and chocolate most definitely has to be in her pack! haha how would we survive without it? :p
I woke up to a small massacre with mine, and it was certainly not celebrated. Love the idea of a space pack and a day out to celebrate her womanhood, I wish my mum had done that with me.
My eldest daughter started getting breast buds in late 2006 early 2007 and got her first AF in Dec 2009. Hers was heavy from the start.
We celebrated it with chocolate, a movie at home and a new charm for her pandora bracelet.
Lisa, can I ask if/when moodiness and emotional outbursts happened? How long before Af?
I didn't even realise my first period had started.
I was staying at my Grandma's for a holiday and she took me to the beach. At the end of the day she told me to go have a bath and put my bathers in the laundry for her to wash them. About half way through my bath Grandma came into the bathroom and showed me my bloody bathers and asked me if I knew what that was.
Told her I had no idea and she informed me it was my first period and she'll have to send Grandpa to the shops for me cause she'd had a hysterectomy and didn't have anything for me to use. I was told to wait in the bath until Grandpa got back.
The main thing I remember of it all was cracking up laughing at the brick sized pads Grandpa brought back. LOL
There's some great ideas here ladies, n2l love the chocolate idea. DD has been moody for about a week now, she gets so short tempered with her siblings but sounds like we could be in this for a while longer.

I don't love the chocolate idea. I'm of the opinion that needing chocolate is an unhealthy social construct.

I actually don't crave chocolate when I get my period. I'm usually so doped up on painkillers I don't feel like eating much of anything. May be I could get DD a box of Mersyndol ;)
Get her some Neurofen Plus too. She can take them together.
If you were a really good Mother you'd put a bottle of wine in that pack as well :p
Well there's the rub....if I was a "really good mother". She can buy her own underage wine like I had to.
Mine was heavy from the start as well. We didn't do anything special, apart from Mum bursting into tears and exclaming her baby was a woman :rofl: I would second the idea of getting a little kit together for her, and keeping it in her room. I had cramps for months before I first started, and even though I knew what the cramps were and what to expect, I still hid it from Mum for a couple of days. I ruined so many knickers, lol!
Good for you N2L. Parents these days do too much for their children.
When I was a tacker we had to walk through snow in bare-feet to buy underage wine.
Uphill both ways.

I hid mine from my mum too. Well I thought I had. Apparently not that well!
If you're going to celebrate, I suggest something at home or after it has finished going somewhere. Those pads are awfully uncomfy when you first start wearing them (& now, 15 years later!).
N2L, my DD started getting moody at 11 and got her period 3 mths before her 13th birthday. Luckily, hers wasn't like a scene out of Carrie :rofl: I don't think I could've coped with that.
Oh Lord, so it could be another 2yrs of this emotional roller coaster. I'm now thinking I was a bit premature in posting this thread.

N2L - my daughter was definitely moody for a good year or so before her AF arrived. The outbursts, tears, eye rolling and general moodiness was the most frustrating part. She's still like it now a few days before and during AF.
I would only to the "celebrate" thing if that is what she would like. If my mum would have done that, I would have been horrified and humiliated.
Mum was no nonsense and just gave me a hug. Told me she loved me and to go have a lie down and read. Just what I needed
This is how I'd describe mine. My daughter is at the same stage. She has had breast to the point she needs a bra for a year now and is almost as hairy down below as me. She had been shaving under her arms pits only for 2months now. I expect she will have AF anytime now she has been moody for ages defiantly over a year and stinky too. I was younger then she currently is when mine started. She is very athletic so perhaps that's held it off for a bit.:
My first af I made a mess of the sheets overnight - so nothing spotty about it either.

My DD didn't tell me but she also didn't really get the opportunity to without either saying it in front of her grandparents or sister before I discovered it for myself. She was at my parents when it happened and when I picked her up it was going all day (she just let herself bleed everywhere) as soon as she got home she went straight to the bath which wasn't unusual given the time of the day and I went in grabbed her dirty clothes and saw for myself.
She is handling it well on an emotional level but we are having some hygiene issues. She went to school yesterday which was a big mistake and I should have insisted she stay at home as she leaked in multiple places on her skirt. It is very fortunate that her skirt is very dark navy so know one could tell thank God. I wish I had of kept her home for a few days to get use to what it is like before sending her back to school.
As for mood swings she was probably less moody the last month or so leading up to it. Other then the 12-18months of puberty signs there was not any other signs it was on its way.
