Finally I know what I am meant to do in my life

Well after going through several miscarriages, almost losing my little girl at 9 mths of age, after going through difficult pregnancies, experiencing depression anxiety, feelings of trauma, loss, going through the almost loss of my marriage of 22yrs. Having so many things that seemed to keep me broken and lost of why all of this has happened and what am I meant to do with my life. Well, it has now hit me like a lightening bolt, of what I am meant to do.
I have gone through all of this for a reason, and to be honest I felt like it was a direction in life I wanted to persue after my first two miscarriages, but tbh, life got in the way, it just mustn't have been the right time.

Well, now it is the right time, my husband is fully supportive, and I am so excited at my decision.

I want to help people, I want to become a councellor, and help people through the most difficult time of their lives.
I am going to go to university as a mature aged student, (very mature aged lol) and study for a bachelor of social science degree or bachelor of psychology degree.

I don't think I have been more sure of anything in my life, and I have to say, I feel so very excited. I know a bit late in life, but better late than never I say. I feel like it seems to be a calling. I am leading more towards the bachlelor of psychology. It will go for four years, and I'm thrilled at my decision.

I just feel like I am meant to help people, apart just from being a mother and a wife and what a fitting way to face the rest of my life.

Thank you TT, there had to be a reason why I experienced all I have, now I feel I know why. Crazy I know, but I guess these thing needed to happen to get me to move into this direction of my life, to make it a better future, and what better way of one feeling good about yourself than to help those in need.

Please make sure you're fully aware of what the different degree options will actually allow you to do. The B Psych will, as I understand it, require a master's degree afterwards for you to be able to work as a psychologist. There will also be a lot of statistics subjects and a lot of science-oriented ones. It might actually be that what you want to do is more social work. You can also do straight counselling courses but you need to have a full picture of the employment options you would have.

Also check whether the Bach of social science will actually enable you to become a counsellor.

The last thing I want to do is discourage you - I think you will be an incredible counsellor - I just want you to actually be able to do that after years of hard work at uni.

Surprised - thank you, I have actually already spoken with the uni, who had already advised me of what the degrees will let me do. The reasoning for the bachelor of psychology is the option of continuing on to the masters of psychology to become a psychologist if I feel like that afterwards. However the bachelor of social science goes more into the counseling side of things which gives me the option of running my own practice if I choose. The bachelor of psychology is just a higher qualification. I had called the uni, to discuss my options as I do want to have a higher qualification than just the councelling diplomas. I have looked into these. That's why right now I'm leading towards the bachelor of psychology or the bachelor of social science. Probably thinking the higher the qualification to at my age will help, as I am no spring chicken any more. Lol
Yet tbh, at this point in time, I'm not looking at furthering onto a masters degree, but that option will be left open, as I know the targeted people I would like to help. When I was younger, I wanted to become a police officer after my oldest sister was abducted, I ended up meeting my now husband and that turned into raisiing a family, yet after also seeing what my sister went through and how the trauma she faced and our family faced, If i can help these people move forward and hopefully stop these families falling apart, as it did with mine. My sister turned away from our family for many many years, so helping any of these families in any way at staying strong with each other and not falling apart would be an honor.
However I do know this is the path I want to take, scary thought at my age, but I look at it, as though what better way to leave this world than knowing that you did your bit in helping others, something to be proud of.
Anyway, before I commit myself to either course I have time to look further into them and I know it will become more clearer as the time gets closer, so I thank you for your support it means slot.

Thank you everyone, I know this is what I want to do, I know all I have experienced is for a reason, not that it felt like it at the time, but how else can you explain it, I guess I sort of worry to if I don't follow this path now, what next is going to hit me in the face for me to standup and take notice. I think I have experienced enough tbh. I know that if you have experienced these sort of problems that others are facing and need help, then it does make you more in tune and can show more empathy than if you hadn't. So I hope that I can help as many people as I can.

I love how my dh is keeping me motivated to do what I want with this, he keeps calling me his little councellor. I did tell him that he won't get charged for my services. Lol.

That is great. I am/was a psychologist and I love it! Hard work (I did a 3 year degree, honours and then masters) but totally worth it. As soon as I did my first psych subject at uni I knew it was for me. There is a balance between the science/academic stuff and the touchy feely relational side which suits me as I couldn't do a job with just one of these.

Congrats ..sounds to me that you will really enjoy the challenges and enjoyments towards getting your degree in psychology or social science. :) Good luck

I know exactly what you mean. I've wanted to be a teacher for years + years (since I was 10/11) and have always had something stand in my way. I'm now in my first week of 4 long years of my bachelor of education :)
