Sleeping Bag Advice Please

Hi'ya, I'm just needing some advice re sleeping bags for DD2. She's a bit of a 'blanket kicker' so I grabbed a sleeping bag on special to give it a go (it was only $10! But tag has caution high fire danger on it?? On a sleeping bag??!!) :shakehead:

Anyway, I have to admit that my being a paranoia re blankets riding up (I think the worst), that it's a lot easier just popping her into bed with the bag on and not really stressing about it. So I'm now looking to get some more (I think), as she's growing fast but there are lots out there! Don't think DP would approve/appreciate my spending upwards of $80 on one bag. I noticed in toys r us catalogue they have a brand called anais or something for about $30, so wondering if anyone has used these & what they're like?? I got quite confused looking at the gro bags with all the 'togs' plus they were pricey?? We live in a cold area so keep heating on at night so it's warm, DD2 is 3 months so advice re size and how many to get would be greatly appreciated. Thanks heaps :D

I always had the expensive brand of sleeping bags. The first two I bought in a bundle off eBay for well under half price. The remainder I bought off eBay or friends etc. Almost all my children's bags were second or third hand. I also sold a few of them after I'd used them or gave them to special people. I always look after things and they were in kept in great condition.
I think buying quality shows. They were always 100% cotton (not polar fleece). And they never had any safety issues with the zips etc. and they lasted, and lasted. I knew my kids were safe and warm.
If you only buy brand new - then research second hand ones, you will realise that you can get half your money back when you are finished.

I get my gro bags from eBay (British seller ... Can't remember the name off hand). I got a two pack for about $50 including postage. They r the genuine gro bag and they are great.
My dd has 2.5 tog for day or warmer nights and she has 3. Tog (only available in uk) for cold nights. I live them and can't recommend them enough. Have a search on eBay and you'll see some great deals!!!

Bambini Pronto have a sale on their bags right now ($25 or $40 depending on the tog).

i reckon a sleep bag is a good investment and I LOVE love love my merino kids one. i got the duvet weight one from ebay and second hand (in good nic) i paid nearly $90 for it. BUT, it is sooo worth it. it is from newborn to 2 years.

if you can invest in a good one, i recommend this one...the merino wool is largely self regulating for baby (ie never gets too hot).

I've also invested in some of the pricier bags, but they are worth it and last for a very long time.
My DS wore them from 3 months - 3 years, and our next baby will be using them all over again.
So it's approximately $600 over 6 years, not a bad investment if you ask me.

A lot of children's clothing ans sleeping bags etc have a high fire danger. If they contain any synthetic fibres, they will have a high fire danger unless treated with really nasty chemicals that are probably carcinogenic instead. :(

Personally I don't let my child come anywhere near fires, in or out of their sleeping bag, so I don't consider a high fire danger rating to be a problem.

You would only avoid the rating if you went with 100% natural fibres, and probably wool filling, which would a) make it expensive and b) still doesn't make it safe to have your baby anywhere near a fire.

DS had sleeping bags til he was about 2.5. We never bought the expensive ones, just regular ones from KMart or Target, and Pumpkin Patch or Myer (never paid more than $30-$40). We never had a problem with zips breaking, though one from Pumpkin Patch did get a frayed press stud. Several had press studs at the bottom so we could fold the bottom up and it lasted longer - I actually added my own to a couple so they lasted longer too.

I used sleeping bags for my boys. They stayed in them til they moved to a bed. Love them. I found a brand called The Dream Bag. They are very similar to gro bags but a cheaper price. They have the 3 tog ratings also.

megs - I used them too, and they used to be around $40-$50, but last I saw they've put them up and are the same price as Gro Bags.

Thanks everyone for replies! :-) Will definately get some. Have looked on net some are on special, if I can get on sale will get new I think. There's some called Aden Anais? does anyone have these, what are they like?? There is a bamboo option with a lower tog of 0.4 which might be better for summer?? Think will buy online as less expensive so any advice I can get is hugely appreciated as I won't be seeing/touching them before I buy. Thanks heaps!! :-)

Hi Softy - I use A&A for my DD in both winter and summer, love them. They're a pretty generous size so will last a while. You can get them for a good price on the Baby Bedding website.

A&A have beautiful sleeping bags.

Wow, I bought mine about 6 years ago and they were only $40 then.

Ok after thinking all weekend have decided to go with A & A after looking online at diff sites they are around $30-40 and I like that they are muslin.

Thanks for recommending baby bedding buffy1, noticed you're in Canberra which do you have for winter/summer?? Am tossing up between the cozy or cozy plus for winter and the muslin or bamboo for summer?? Makes it bit difficult as there's no 'tog' rating like on some of the other brands?? Thanks again :-)

Itti Bitti have 40% off selected Aden & Anais sleeping bags and blankets at the moment. :)

Oh and the cozy plus is tog rated I think ... It's 2 or 2.5 I think.

ETA - just checked their website and it's 2.5.

Hey Softy - either the Cozy (from memory equivalent to 1.7 tog) or Cozy Plus for winter. Probably the Plus for us cold weather gals. I still dress DD quite warmly underneath though.

The thin muslin summer ones are about a 0.4 or 0.5 tog, super thin so perfect for very hot nights.
