Shampoo for kids - no tears

I'm putting this in the pre-school section as it is my pre-schoolers that are causing the dramas - DS2 doesn't care!

What shampoo do you use on your kids?

I was using good old Johnson & Johnsons but the whole animal testing, palm oil, nasty chemicals, etc thing was doing my head in... So then I tried to look for one at the supermarket that was more natural, tried Gaia but it gets in the kids' eyes and hurts :wall:

And I think it has palm oil.

Anyway so I found a Safeway home brand that has no palm oil and is a no tear version. Hurts their eyes :wall:

We used the organic care ones from the supermarket, not year free but they put a rolled up face washer over their eyes when I wash it out. So far that's been the easiest option, even with the no tears stuff mine would have issues and make complaints, now hair washing is fairly complaint free :)

We alternate between a moo goo shampoo and a combined Palmolive shampoo/conditioner pump action one. DD1 has a real issue with having her hair washed and water on her face but has never complained that they hurt her eyes. DD2 doesn't fuss with the moo goo running over her face.

Moo goo - will have to check it out. We have lots of success with the eczema lotion...

Beans we try the face washer thing... It just doesn't seem to work... They both still cry and carry on... Hair washing time is becoming a real problem :(

I'm a true hippy - no shampoo here :)

They only get shampoo after a nit treatment and then I do it with them leaning over the bath with a facewasher against their eyes.

However when we were using shampoo, I had better success with teaching them to lean their head back and look at the ceiling while I washed it out. And did it quickly LOL

Started using dandruff shampoo when DS1 was about six - he had shocking dandruff. Now use normal shampoo and introduced conditioner when they decided to grow their hair long.

We usually wash every second day.

I've been using sukin shampoo and conditioner on them, but I only do it about once a month. Seems to not hurt their eyes?

I also don't wash my kids hair with shampoo. Maybe every second month if they get dirt tipped in there or something. It's too traumatic for all involved!

I have heard of little caps that go around their heads and stop the shampoo from dripping.

If I need to detangle dds hair I use a bit of conditioner on a comb and just do the ends. She is happy with that.

I would love to get in there and scrub my kids scalps but they have never had any issues or nits so I just go with it knowing they will wash it themselves eventually!

Swimming goggles. Then you can use any shampoo you desire.

I've never found one that didn't hurt.
Like Mel I've had more success teaching them to tip their heads right back in the bathwater to sloosh it out. I gave up though when DD was quite little. Her hair is quite fine and tangly but just the bathwater and a bit of detangler have always been fine. She's only started using proper shampoo now that she can do it competently by herself.

We do the head right back and use a small cup so there isnt a lot of water and it doesn't go in their eyes.

We use the organic care one too. My sooky kids have no issues with it.

I don't use shampoo on the girls at all, unless there is a specific reason - I honestly couldn't tell you the last time I washed their hair. When I do, I have them lay down in the bath and rinse it that way. No tears, no carry on. DD1 just had to get a handle on the notion of keeping her eyes closed, we didn't have any problems.

We used Palmolive Kids Shampoo or the Aldi kids one.

We do swimming lessons once a week so generally hair gets washed after that. I do try and tell them to lean right back but they just don't seem to get it! We have face washers on eyes... Sometimes helps.

I'll have a look in Aldi!

have you seen those jugs at kmart that are rubber and plastic. The rubber bit goes against their forehead to waterproof eye area, maybe try that. My kids don't waas their hair much, but anytime they go in chlorine they need it washed that day so don't stop washing their hair!! Goodluck!

DS loves to lay back in the bath and 'float', while he does this I tend to wash the shampoo out (GAIA), would your kids go for this trick?

However he goes to swimming lessons and it really depends on his mood, some times he will let me pour a jug of water over his head and he doesn't care, other days he is rather precious about it.

Hey OP, I had a bit of a lightbulb moment last night about this :lol:

With my dd's they would freak when they saw the bottles of shampoo and conditioner, let alone when I attempted to wash their hair.
But last night I was thinking (whilst washing dd's hair) I wonder if the kids would still react the same if you got some of those clear or coloured sauce bottles, decorated them, then filled them without the kids knowing with shampoo and conditioner. When hair washing comes round you could grab it and call it something random and add a quick story to it, perhaps they will play the game and let you wash their hair?

Just a thought anyhow? Im tempted to give it a go with mine to see if it makes a difference.

Thanks for the thought beans! Might be worth a try. We've gone back to J&Js... I just do a bit of this :lalala: while I'm using it :( I did have an awesome two weeks where DD's hair was braided (thank you Vanuatu!!!) and I didn't have to wash it or brush it or anything. It was fabulous!!! But the holiday is over, so we are back to it.

I saw a pic on AliBaby's FB of her DS with some sort of hair washing thing, maybe I'll ask her what that was. Might help.

MooGoo, or I'd look for something with little or no artificial fragrance and sodium laurel / laureth free as the sls is very drying and can sting/dry out eyes.

I use organic care to wash my toddlers hair and we use Moogoo for the bub.
