I'm jumping in here because we are currently in the market for one. Eldest DD has been wanting one for ages. I "discovered" sparkling mineral water last year, and I reckon you could use soda stream in similar ways. Instead of only using their syrups, some fizzy would be nice in spritzers, with citrus slices/mint/berries, and with natural cordials (diluted so they are not crazy-sweet like normal soft drink). So we're getting it for the lifestyle value & not because it is/isn't more Economical.
I've been thinking about it for years. Same reason as Marydean.
We've got one! I love it! Kids don't use it, it is just for me and DH (and guests) but so far, it's been great. Much more economical I think. But I can't tell you price comparison wise. I love it with a dash of Bickfords bitter lemon, num num.
Love it love it love it!
I drink soda water daily with a squeeze of fresh lime. If I come in from my ride home I just make some up and I'm set. Otherwise I would buying bottle after bottle and throwing away a lot of plastic into the recycle bin. I also get the kids mix for the girls as a treat and I always keep some tonic mix for this time of the year when I want a G&T ;)
I'm going to get one for mum for Christmas.
So those who have them, what's the difference between the cheaper models & the dearer ones?
Also, are all the canisters refillable? Where do get them filled?
We've had one for a couple of years and use it all the time. I only buy soft drink if we are having a group over. We mainly use it for soda water but some of the flavours are nice too. Worth every cent.
We use it just for sparkling water, we rarely drink soft drink.
We just bought the cheap bigw version but it works great, we figure if we actually use it we will invest in a nicer one.
My FIL just got one from myer, probably worth double ours. I think apart from aesthetics it is a bit easier to use.
we have one and use it everyday.
We had one when I was a kid growing up too.
I can not stand the soda stream flavours, they (mostly) all have artificial sweeteners in them, blerghhh, faaar too sweet!
I did discover their "kids" natural range the other day (no artificial sweeteners or colours) the strawberry actually tastes like strawberry!
DF and I mainly use it with bickfords cordials or ****tails. I love soda water with a splash of lime or lemon too... yum.
You can swap the cannisters over - so you take it in to be reuse etc and get a new one on the spot.
We have one and love it we rarely use cordials or flavours just bubble juice as dd calls it.
We got a soda stream about three months ago and we love it!! Use it all the time. Can't stand the syrups that come with it , ugh! But we do use bickfords cordials in it, and sometimes ribena (for the grown ups haha!).
We drink fizzy plain water all the time .. I didn't know you didn't have to use the flavors it comes with ?
Can you save the water once you make it ? If so how long and how much does it make at a time ?
I think catch of the day have a deal on them atm
CinderToriella it lasts in the fridge just as long as a normal store bought sparkling drink. Soda stream have one litre and 500ml bottles available.
We have a cheapie, works perfectly fine.
Tonic mix? I must get some of that!!
We rarely put the syrups in the bottle. Always mix in a glass. They last a while in the fridge.
So where has everyone bought theirs from? I saw them for $100 for plastic version and $149 for the chrome version at 'House.'
Yup catch of the day have a pack for $99 ATM
That one is the Genisis. The one I saw at House is called 'Source'. Not sure if it makes a huge difference to get the new model or not. Big W has them for $59. But wondering if they are too cheap and break easier....
I saw the $60 version at big w but they were white & lime green. I'll pay more to get something that looks nicer on the kitchen bench.
Yeah mine is a bit tacky looking, wish I'd paid a bit more and gotten a chrome one or something. I got all my bits and bobs from the red circle boutique, Target :)
It's apparently a "designer" model but it is quite plasticky and really top heavy - half the time when I screw a bottle in I worry it's going to fall over
We have black and white soda stream model, I think it was one of the lower end ones from big W.
We get the the refills from bigW too, they always have stock.
We were buying soda water for about 90c a L at coles before we got it and I think DH did the sums and the machine paid for itself in only a few months.
We have 4 1L bottles (2 for me 2 for DH). When we finish one we refill the other with water so it can get cold by the time we need it. Once its cold we make the soda water then usually add syrup right away. DH uses the soda stream vanilla cola. I use just a little bit of cottees natural raspberry- or I leave it as soda water and sometimes add a dash of juice to the glass.
Its seriously the best :)
Ours is a crappy plastic looking one but it stays in the cupboard under the sink so I don't care about that. Also we take ours camping with us. Fresh bubbly rainwater or G&T on the beach - too easy!
We have one it's just a grey basic one. DH loves sparkling water and was such a waste of plastic bottles and expensive so this is much better.
Not a fan of there syrups but add cordials.
My DP did some sums last night and I am not sure it is worth it. He had one in a former life. He reckons the gas canisters are $40 and make about 40 one litre bottles of drink (so $1 for one iitre). I purchase soda water, etc for 75-80 cents for 1.25 litres.
It's pretty expensive when you look at it like that. Do they still swap canisters or do you buy them new each time now?
We have a Soda Stream but the kids don't like the taste it gives their drinks so we never use it.
Depends. How many times you press the button down (for how fizzy you like it) makes a difference. We've been using the same gas canister for just over a year. We use the soda stream probably 2-3 times a week on average. If I was buying bottles from the supermarket, that would work out far more expensive than replacing the canister.
The canisters aren't that much! Think it's about $20 for a swap over ours lasts about a month and it gets a lot of use. We keep it under the sink too.
Just looked at the BigW website, new canisters are $45. Maybe that's what he used for calculations?
Yeah it's cheaper with the swapover just checked it's still $20 for the 40l bottles so that's 50c a litre if you press two/three times.
How do you swap the bottles ?
You swap them at kmart or bigw.
Our gas bottles last about a month, we use it everyday, my hubby is addicted to sparkling water now haha! We pay $19.95 for a swapped gas bottle from our local good guys store. Anywhere that sells a soda stream should swap the gas bottles for you. The kids love sparkling water too, they think it's such a special treat - like a soft drink hehe, but so much better for them!
We have one, definitely cheaper (and a lot easier than having to put it on the list). We use some of the syrups, but a lot of plain soda water that we add to juice or just as others have said, with slices of citrus, etc.
The gas canisters can be swapped at Big W and Target, those two I know at least. You'd think since we bought the unit from Woolworths you'd be able to swap them there, but I haven't checked. Costs about $17 for a 63L canister. Lasted us about a year.
