First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
My DD got her first period overnight last Thursday/Friday. Today - a week later - she is still bleeding. As far as I can tell it is fairly light (I am comparing it to my own, I guess), but I would have thought it would have stopped by now.
Hoping to hear from others whose DD's have gone through similar.
Thanks in advance :)

Re: First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
Is it red or brown blood?

Re: First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
Thankfully I've got years ahead of me before DD gets to this stage, but I remember my first one. It wasn't very heavy - started pretty light, was heavier around day 3 before getting lighter again and finishing on day 7. They stayed like this for years, it wasn't til I was in my 20s that it started going to 5 days, and that only seemed to happen once I was on the pill.

It's red Olive.

Re: First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
Mine lasted about 10 days. Isn't the first one heavier? I can't remember. My first one was 10 days, and from then on they were between 10-14, and very heavy.

Re: First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
My first one was quite light and lasted a day or two, my DD1 was the same.
-
Re: First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
my first one was light but lasted 7 days.

Re: First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
Thanks everyone! I guess it's true what they say...we are all different!
I'm not worried so much as surprised.

Re: First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
Can I hijack this post & ask at what age your girls got their first period?
-
Re: First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
My DD got her first in Oct & it was light to start with then heavy & lasted for about 5 days. November was similar (maybe a bit heavier?) but Dec was non existent & Jan was only one day of light bleeding. I cried when she told me she had her period, happy tears, the realisation my little girl was turning into a young lady, lots of emotions.

Re: First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
Dee my DD was 12yrs 7mths. I was a similar age.

Re: First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
My DD was 11. She has very short periods 3-4 days.
-
Re: First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
She might need a few cycles to begin to understand what's *normal* for her. My sister and I were very different with our cycles, as was my Mum and I. Anything is normal at this point. 7 days doesn't sound anything unusual to me.
How are you feeling about all of this though? It's a special time for both of you. Are you going to do anything to celebrate her menarche?

First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
I was going to say the same congrats and commiserations. It's such a bittersweet moment because it's a wonderful celebration of their blossoming to a young lady. But sad for the sentimental saps like me who sobbed at them not being a little girl anymore ;)

Re: First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
Mine first was 8 days solid. And continued like that, like clockwork until I had DD1.
I was 13.
-
Re: First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
I remember mine lasting for ages the first time, was probably 7 or 8 days, very light.
-
Re: First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
Mine was only a few days. And always has been. 4-5 days tops. I was 12.5.
I expect DD1 to get hers this year :/ I don't want it to happen. I hate having to deal with AF.
A lot of girls I know had their first, then 6-8 weeks til the next one. Took a good 6-12 months before they became regular.

Re: First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
I was 12 and mine was super light and went for 2 weeks. Then it was very sporadic until my 20s when it was around 5 days long.

Re: First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
DD12 got her first period last month, it lasted for 3 days and was very light. She was worried yesterday as it was due and asked me why she didn't get it lol.
Regards,
Dianne

My DD is 11 (a few months off 12).
It was definitely bittersweet. Such an important milestone, but she is my baby :(
I suggested we do something special to mark the occasion. She was slightly horrified at the thought

Re: First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
DD & I went out for ice cream to celebrate & I brought her a gorgeous little diary so she can mark when she gets her period & work out the pattern. I was severely let down by my mum when I first got mine so I've tried to make it a happy occasion so there's no awkwardness & she can come ask questions if she needs too.

So was my DD and to be perfectly honest, I would have been if my mum had offered me a 'celebration' too.

Re: First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
My DD got her first period almost a year ago now. Her's was heavy the first time. Very heavy and lasted a good week. Her period now only goes for about 4-5days and is what I'd say is normal (from what I can tell) She also does not get them monthly. More every 7-8weeks. I can tell when she is close to starting again as she gets so moody and her face breaks out when normally her skin is pretty much clear.
To start with she couldn't manage her bleeding. Often having leaks but I think it must be much lighter now and she rarely springs a leak.
I also didn't do anything special just gave her more tlc. I would have loved too but she would have been horrified if I made it an event. I think she preferred her privacy.

Re: First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
We celebrated. And there were gifts. Then when she got her lady pooch a bit after her period we celebrated that too.
She also doesn't cramp nor does her mood change. She's pleasant regardless. Unlike her mother :/
Can I just say if you notice things are a bit weird keep an eye on it. A gyno once said that given what my periods were like as a teen they could have predicted the PCOS. So sometimes it's important to be aware of what their body is doing. Whilst fertility isn't a problem now for them it's always good to keep an eye on things so they know what to expect in the future. And so they can seek help if needed etc.

Re: First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
What is a lady pooch? Do I have one?

Re: First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
The lady tummy. That most women get post period. Even slight women have them ;) but all through my teen years I thought it was fat. And I didn't want my daughter going through that. And she has the most amazing body image, self love and all that jazz so I must have done something right :)

Oh! I definitely have one then!

Re: First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
I was 12 or just 13 I can't remember but it was on my year seven band camp. Yay for me! Not! And it was heavyish and lasted 7days.

I'm so glad that's what it is and you weren't celebrating what Urban Dictionary said it was.

I have to say, I was a little worried. It sounded too much like a small furry mammal for my liking

Re: First period...How long should bleeding go on for?
I plan on celebrating with my girls when they get their periods. I think it's a huge rite of passage, it kind of makes me teary just thinking about it :')

I thought we could celebrate too. But she didn't want to. Turns out it's not about me :(

That was me when I got my first period. When I think now, about DD starting hers I'm the same as PZ, I get all emotional. It's a huge deal, I'm losing my little girl and she's becoming a young woman. But when I got mine I just wanted it to be another day. I asked Mum to borrow a couple of pads and if she could buy me some that day and then that was it. I didn't want to hear another word about it and I didn't want to talk about it. I think she was a little disappointed but if she'd tried to celebrate it I would have been mortified and probably had the same stance, that it's not about her.
Funny how things change when you're the mother!

Lucky everybody is different, hey? I would have loved my mum to have acknowledged it as a big deal for me.

I would have liked to too but my daughter just wanted a hug and a cry and then to pretend it wasn't happening.

I've been getting my period for 30 years and that's pretty much what I still want
