Do you think that some men have more x than y sperm (and visa versa) as opposed to a 50/50 mix?
Is that a reason why some couples end up with more or all of the same gender of children? Or do you think it is a purely timing thing?

my totally non-scientific belief is that if there is 2years or less between pregnancies I believe that you're more likely to have the same gender. I have zero proof that this is the case, other than anecdotal evidence amongst my group of friends and family :D my sister had 3 boys, 18 months between boy 1 and 2 and then 16 months between boy 2 and 3. they then had a "whoopsie" baby girl 2 years and 8 months after boy 3!
I've heard that theory before... But that didn't work for me - 2 boys, 3.5 years apart.
I think it's either random or a mixture of the man's sperm and the environment in the woman's cervix/uterus?
lol Connie! see totally random in my evidence :D
My friend was convinced her ex DH only had the ability to have boys, 3 boys together. He just had a baby girl with his new wife!
Random I think :)
sporty men are more likely to have girls.
I think it's random, but my first 2 are girls and within 2 year period.., then I had a boy
I have no idea!! My own personal theory for me is that I must favour female sperm. 4 girls from two different dads... perfect "boy" timing the last baby!!! Apparently cervical fluid has something to do with what sperm succeed too, not just female/male sperm
I'm the youngest (B,G,G) and I've got 3 kids (B,G,G) so thought it was me influencing things in someway - some sort of genetic family thing but then my ex husband has gone on to have 3 kids with his 2nd wife (B,G,G) with the exact same age gaps as I've got with mine (he's dad to all the kids) so now I don't know what to think!
I think that (and this is my own, completely unproven and unscientific opinion) -
- some men's "girls swimmers" are better swimmers than their "boy swimmers" (or vice versa) ("boy swimmers" are the sprinters, "girl swimmers" the endurance) so it could be that some are better at their jobs than others
- female environment definitely plays a part (and will favour some sperm over others)
- add in external influences, like diet, medication and temperature and you can affect sperm quality and cervical environment
- and of course timing
I also think that for us, either DH didn't produce good XY sperm (boy) or either I can't carry them, because we tried EVERTHING to sway for a boy (and I know that it isn't scientifically proven even if it works, but it "seems" to work when you follow it closely) and whilst I did fall pg, it was a m/c, and I am convinced that my m/c have been boys (no evidence, just a feeling). We gave up the "swaying" and just went back to our "usual" (which according to gender swaying naturally swayed towards girls anyway) and ... well, we have 2 DD and 2 more DD on the way. team pink here!
BTW - I work with several people who have in their first marriage had 2 x girls (or boys) only to have in their second marriage 2 x boys (or girls).
I have 3 boys and 1 girl.
The boys all less than 2 years age gap between each boy, and between ds3 and dd over 2 year age gap. Didn't do much differently, only limited in eating take out (of I did have take out it was only Chinese lol)
My parents had 4 girls 1 boy.
My sister had a girl
My other sister had two girls.
Dh's parents had 2 boys (he has a half sister too)
Dhs sister had boy and girl
And dhs brother had two girls.
It's completely random but I think sometimes maybe two people are more swayed to have more chance of conceiving a certain gender (but still have a chance of the other just the luck of the draw I suppose)
We've got 2 Girls and although we definitely weren't trying to gender sway, those theories state that we should have had 2 boys! I was charting while TTC and am therefore very aware of my cycles and when we conceived both girls. DH isn't sporty at all but he does drink a lot of caffeine, if that makes a difference :dunno:
My sister has 2 boys (and she is from the same family as me so G,G,B) and her DH is from a G,B family. Both her and her DH are very sporty too (super active!) so they blow the sporty = Girls theory out of the water too.
Both DH and I are from G,G,B families and both our mums had a larger gap between their girls and boy babies. It will be interesting to see what we have when we try for #3 given the age gap will be bigger too.
I honestly believe it's just luck of the draw though and with only two possible outcomes (ie Boy or Girl) the odds are literally 50/50!
It's fun speculating though :D
I think it's timing and environment, with both DSs we just dtd everyday around Oing with DD we swayed using calcium/magnesium vitamins and stopped dtd 6 days before Oing (it was supposed to be roughly 3 days but then I O'd later than previous months)
I have found that my friends whose hubby's play sports have all had girls but so perhaps physical fitness plays a part also
Gee wizzy ~ nope total opposite in my family. Me, less than 2 years my brother and then more than 2 yesrs another brother.
Pmsl madb...we have a girl and dh is fr from sporty! Pity..
What I find fascinating is how, somehow the world gets balanced. No matter how many people only have boys or pnly have gorla
lol TT!...like I said in my op, it's my total non-scientific belief :D
15mo between my brother and I. Almost 3yrs between my girls.
No idea what I think, just random really!
I dunno, I just read that somewhere

That's really interesting MadB, My DH is an only child but his Dad had 5 sisters & 3 brothers.
I had two girls as well !!! :) go DF and me hahaha
PMSL. I'm feeling super gorgeous right now too!
Talking of unscientific theories, growing up I always thought that men with facial hair will have girls - this was based on - an uncle having three girls, my friend being one of two girls and her dad had a mustache and Kevin Webster from Coronation Street having two girls. :-)
Of course who knows whether any of these had facial hair at time of conception.
Maybe now with Movember being around someone could see whether there are more girls born 9 months after November than in other months :-)
My dad has only ever shaved once his whole life, when he was a teenager, so has had a beard forever....he had 1 girl 2 boys....
Dh has a beard and we had a girl though...(he has more girls than boys, but don't know his beard status for the other kids =p
And my uncle has a big beard, 4 girls...so 'more likely' but not 100%
Haha we are the exception to all of these theories it seems.
DH has a beard and is a semi-pro footballer, so super sporty... And we have 2 boys.
My fathers family were 3 boys.
All 3 boys all had a girl then a boy. (3rd in my fam was a girl).
My brother, sister, cousin & I all had girls first.
My brother & I then had another girl (sister & cousins 1st baby & brother has step dd & bil to raise, so no more there).
Ex did physical work when our 3 girls were conceived & less physical when ds was conceived.
But my dads job never changed to make a difference & my sisters birthday is the same month as my brother. So time of year the same.
My brother also does the same physical work like dad & ex. Though ex is still doing that work now & has a boy.
Don't know, lol. There are lots of coincidences in my family :)
another "theory" I've heard of, which, I'm sure will have many exceptions to the "rule" ;) is that men who are more hot-headed/blokey/alpha male types etc tend to produce girls? I know amongst my group of friends/family that this "theory" is evident! The guys who are more quiet/introverted all have boys with the exception of one couple who have one of each! the couples who have girls (my hubby included) are very blokey/alpha male types :D
at the end of the day my true belief is that it really is a 50/50 chance of either, with, of course, external/biological influences having their own impact!
My DH is very much a hot-headed/blokey/alpha male type
My hubby has minimal body hair, pretty average facial hair, we have one girl, second (another girl) expected April, which will make a two years two months age gap. So I'm choosing to buy into the beautiful parent theory ;)
Going back to Little O's initial question, my friend works in evolutionary biology and she says for many species a male will produce more of one gender than the other but that females (keeping in mind these are not species that mate for life) will generally choose mates who produce the same gender. So they will for whatever subconscious instinctive reason go for mates that all or mostly produce females, or mostly males. And that this choosing can be hereditry, as in the women of one family all tend to be attracted to males who produce the same gendered offspring. Makes sense for my extremely female-dominant extended fam!
That's interesting LL, My Mums side is very much female-dominant.
