Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Hi all! Stormageddon has decided he doesn't like going to bed. Liebling did the same at 8w old. Do I just screw up babies that sleep somehow?
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Boogers Had spent 15 minutes on a response and lost it before I could post.
You are a great mum. You haven't stuffed up sleep.
Apparently we are going through a wonder weeks leap at the moment. I'm thinking of the extra night wake ups as bonding time.
Sending hugs your way. Will try and re write my long response tomorrow

Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
I don't mind the night feeds. It's the screaming from over tiredness at 11pm and refusing to feed to sleep that gets me! Or any other sleep method. Might be too hot for him, will try just bodysuit and thin sheet over him tonight rather than a full, heavy babygrow. Also DH being "tired" (son of a...) so going to bed at 9 and I have up to 3 hours of getting Stormageddon to sleep without waking up the boys.
Also, drat and blast for losing a post. I hate that too!

Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Hi ladies. Just a quick note to say make sure you hug your little ones extra tight tonight. We had a big scare this morning when little Tigger was locked in the car. We still don't know how it happened. I think Piglet was helping mummy closing the door and the keys were inside. When clipping them onto my bag, I must have hit the lock button. Luckily I was at a friends place so could use her phone to ring Volkswagen and organise for help. Even though it was a cooler day, little Lachie was very hot when we got him out. Luckily everything worked out well for us but I haven't been so panicked in my life. It was the longest half an hour ever. If it had been a hot day, I would have smashed the windows without a second thought. Thankfully, we didn't need to because I would hat to think of the ramifications for Tigger if it was. I'm still really unsettled and have a huge headache but just wanted to share our story. The scary part was, I distinctly remember putting my bag on the back seat because we were unloading furniture from the back where I normally put it so I don't lock the keys in. I thought it would be okay for a couple of minutes while I shut the gate so Piglet didn't get out on the road.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Hugs Foss. That is so scary. Much love to you all and thanks for the reminder. Our front door self locks and I'm paranoid enough about that.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Ironically, it was probably my fault for teaching Piglet to safely close the car doors without slamming her fingers.

Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Hi ladies. Thought I would finally come say hi. I don't think I will have anyone in my May babies thread just like the baby buddies.
Charlie was born on the 26th. Very happy and healthy. Unfortunately at 10 days old he got very sick and we spent a week in SCN. He is currently an out patient as he can't maintain his weight and they still don't know what happened and why. We are waiting on a metobolic screen test to come back. Hopefully that has some answers. It has been an emotionally draining time.
Foss, what a scary day. Glad bubs is ok.

Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Oh Kazzo. That is horrible, especially not knowing. I hope everything works out well

Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Hugs Kazzo. Saying prayers for you and Charlie.

Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Just had Stormageddon's 2 month vaccinations. Very brusque nurse. I wasn't allowed to feed him while she jabbed him. He screamed the place down. Sleeping now, think he has forgiven me!

Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Hi ladies! I've been a bit awol from this site so nice to see you all here! Technically we are a May baby (3rd) but I'd rather be here with you ladies and it sounds like May babies is a bit empty according to you Kazzo?
So sorry to hear your little one is having a challenging start to life on the outside Kazzo.. Sending much love and strength to you all, especially Bub. I hope you get some answers soon so you can focus on getting them strong again. Please let us know if we can help in anyway..
Foss, what a scary ordeal! Glad he is ok and you got him out relatively quickly. I can't stand automatic locking cars, although I do have one. I never leave my keys in the car for that reason and keep my spare in my handbag too! A friend of mine once popped her 18 month in the car and shut the door. He had the keys in his hand as likes to play with them, she went around to drivers door and in that moment he pressed the buttons on the car key remote and locked himself in!! She had to spend about ten mins coaxing him to press the buttons again, and he did eventually.
Ca plane, hope your Bub is starting to settle a little better now. Our little girl is seven weeks now, we are doing well although the poor little poppet is snuffling and snorting with a cold and cough.. It's horrible listening to her snuffly breathing at night and struggling breastfeeding cause nose breathing is a bit tough at times!
Any tips on how to get through a cold?
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Poor bub with a cold! I must confess to picking solid snot out of Stormy's nose to help him.
I also never, ever give baby remote car keys as I know a few people whose babies locked themselves in the car. I found toy keys etc in the boxes we brought in yesterday, so think we used them instead. It's such a scary thing to happen and we live in a cold country, must be much worse for you. Helps that we only have one car and DH has it for work so I rarely need to entertain baby getting the car sorted on my own.
Sleep, seems that the vaccinations pushed his sleeping back to going through at night. Phew! Moving him up a size in sleepsuit too as his legs and feet are too big for 62cm stuff. Can't bring myself to cut off the feet, so wasteful for when you want to use them on the next baby.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Hi Danie!
We still can't believe it happened because I'm typically a little paranoid about it. My husband even gets a little cranky with how pedantic I am because he thinks someone will steal the car as I leave the keys on the tailgate. Putting it down to the universe, with a little help from piglet.
As for a cold, I used a vaporizer and thought it worked really well BUT I didn't have a baby with a cod until about 9/10 months... not sure if I would use it on a really young one. I also have been known to pull out the snot. If you are extremely careful, a bobby pin works really well as a hook but I only used this as a last resort because I couldn't get the actual sucker to work.
We also had our 2 month vaccines just before the car ordeal. He was such a brilliant little boy and there have been no side effects that we have noticed. Glad stormy is sleeping through. Tigger sleeps brilliantly from 7 to around 1am the wakes up every hour or two for a quick feed.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
My version of sleeping through is not playing at night. We still wake every few hours to feed. But we're awake for under a minute so it doesn't count as a wakeup.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Wow sleeping from 7-1am would be heaven!! We usually sleep 9'ish to 12 or 1am then 3'ish then more frequent wakes up till 6:30am.. The little wake ups that just need a little pat on the back to get back to sleep like you Ca Plane.. Sometimes she is asleep at 6 or 7pm till 8/9 but we wake her when we are about to go to bed for a feed and/or nappy change. Last time we let her sleep through she woke at 10pm wanting a feed.. She only sleeps 4hrs maximum at a time.. And that's quite rare.. What can I do to get her sleeping longer at night!?
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Wait. Honestly, they do sleep in the end. If you don't want baby to scream alone, you wait. This is ridiculously early to be sleeping through and not great for bfing. Storm did a 4hr, 2hr then 3hr sleep overnight last night, pretty usual, only the 3hr one was not being held! Turns out he's a tummy sleeper. Sadly I was needing to feed when he woke up so fed him both very full breasts. Another hour's snooze, dressed and heading downstairs... Cue powerspew as he overfeeds if I let him.
At this stage, they usually need feeding every 3hrs or so overnight. If it's just feed back to sleep, they'll sleep through as soon as their tummy is ready. And under a year, sleeping through is classed as 5 hours overnight, which most babies do by 6 months.
I went out with some work friends last night, with Stormageddon in tow. The staff at the Thai restaurant loved him so much they cuddled him as I ate. Fantastic! He was awake the whole time but started getting grumpy about 9.30, not unexpected really.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Danie I don't think there is anything you can do to get them to sleep longer. Being on number 2, I'm more relaxed about the sleeping. First time around, I stressed big time that piglet wasn't getting enough sleep.
Tigger will sleep and in the meantime, I'm enjoying our one on one cuddles. We have settled into a nice rhythm where he wakes between 12 and 1 for his first night feed, then between 3 and 4 then around 5-6 when we will bring him in bed with us if we didn't bring him in at the 3/4 feed.
The only time things go awry is when we are cluster feed with one and teeth with the other. So far the worst night was 1.5 hours sleep total. Needless to say, the next day was very hard.
I tried the dream feed with Tigger but it didn't work. It caused him to wake up hourly afterwards so just wait until he wakes by himself now. Dream feeds worked a treat with piglet.
I don't think you can realistically expect a 7pm to 7am sleep until they are on solids and having solids as their major source of sustenance with breast milk as supplementary.
Tigger is now 64cm so completely in 00 size. We had to go shopping for new clothes for the poor little fella.
I've also got a full stash of cloth nappies on the way. I have always used disposables but have felt guilty about the landfill and always wanted to go cloth. Well I went to the baby show and bit the bullet and bought a stash of 36. After lots and lots of research, I finally did it and I'm super excited. Now I'm just impatient because they haven't arrived yet!
Hoping everyone is going well.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Yay for going cloth, Foss. Which nappies did you get? I have a right mix of materials, types and fits. That's great for me as I can pick the nappy style I fancy, and great for DH as there are some easy (ie prestuffed pockets) nappies left for him all the time.
I'm looking forward to when my breasts stop feeling so full and over large. Just a constant size, not going up and down about 3 sizes with feeds. C cup when empty, but DD or E when he hasn't fed for a few hours. Just pick a size and stick to it!
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Yeah I dont expect a night sleep through for awhile.. It would be nice to get a stint of sleep longer than 3hrs at some point though!!
We have cloth nappies too but to be honest, we have mostly been using Eco disposables that breakdown in landfill so the guilt factor is lowered. Plus no bleach and nasties used on the nappies either so nicer on her skin.. We have prefolds but I am finding they leak a fair bit and the inserts get soaked with wee so sit wet against her skin..we also have some osfm but they still seem way too chunky and big on her.
She weighs 5.2kg now and 58cm
So still in 000's..
Still has some snot and mucus rattling around but her cold is improving thank goodness. We tried the vaporiser (chemist said ok for newborn) but I thought the oil stuff they recommended was way too strong do we left it plain, just steam and it was fine.
How annoying about the fluctuating bra sizes! I use a Bonds maternity bra that is stretchy so fits fine when I am full or empty!
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Ps. Thanks for both your advice on sleeping.. It's probably the day sleeps she needs more help with- 20-45min cat naps!
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
I went for the hippybottomus nappies ca plane. They are a one size fits many. I have tried the eco disposables Danie but find they don't work with Tiggers body shape and he manages to pee outside them so back to the Huggies. I try to assuage my guilt by telling myselfi go three less than half compared to other brands.
Tigger is now over 6kg and63+cm so I'm hoping that the cloth nappies won't be too bulky or leaky.
I know I struggled with piglet having catnaps. It wasn't until I worked out her different cries and patterns, we settled with 4 or 5 45 minute catnaps during the day.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Tbh, I find the type of nappy doesn't matter, it's the quality of the cover that stops the leaking. With the flat nappies, 2 hours tops. With the fitted, up to 3 hours before a change. The one size stuffables leak a little if wet or just a big wee in one go.
Stormy catnaps too in the day usually, unless ill. But as he sleeps longer at night, I don't mind. Liebling would sleep beautifully in the day and was a shocker at night.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Foss I also bought some hippybottomus osfm nappies but haven't tried them yet. A friend recommended the bamboo Babyland ones so we bought three of them to try out but they seem too bulky On her for now.
We use bamboo try newborn size in the first few weeks and they were good but she must squirt her poops out sideways as they often leaked out the side too.
I guess it's a matter of finding the right one for your babe. Is it possible to even find the perfect cloth nappy??
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
For Liebs, fitted terry nappies were best. But I had more flats, from which his poos escaped. Though flats with an eenee cover worked well. Stormy, being much fatter, gets on great with fitted one size or flats, but with size specific covers. Does not get on with the eenee covers, which are sized. Just different body shapes. But trial and error is a pain when you don't want loads of nappies. I have about 80 size 1 nappies, not counting covers ( maybe 6 types). I did go a bit mad last time! 36 of those nappies are flat cotton, bought pre Liebs, then I found fitted worked better, so not all my fault!
Did weights and measures last night (10w 5d). 2' and 14lb, both spot on. Which is 61cm and about 6.3 to 6.4kg. In 68cm clothes as the nappy bulks out the body too much. That's big, especially the weight. Yay for Stormageddon!
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
The nappies arrived today! I'm busily washing them so they become absorbant.
Tigger is like piglet and only poos every week or so, which means that I should be quite okay most of the time because I'm used to poosplosions.
The covers are really cute too! Elephants, sea creatures, stars, monsters, and lots more. Now we just need to get the weather to clear long enough so I can get them dry. I also need an airtight nappy bucket so searching online because my local big w and kmart didn't have any.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Oh how scary foss, definitely holding my baby close.
Congrats Kazzo - happy to have you with us :-) sorry to hear bubba got sick.
I must say I haven't read everything yet but I have scanned a few post and see the word sleep mentioned a lot - what is that you speak of?
aFM... Miss Amelia has Food protein allergies/intolerances not sure what to exactly, know that dairy is one of them - so I've had to go from breastfeeding to a specialised formula Neocate we are still mixed feeding as she isn't a fan but we are slowly getting there.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Oh cat, I hope it clears up soon and everything falls into place for you.
Well, I've washed all my new nappies 6 times and they are now on the washing line waiting for the sun to dry them out tomorrow. Very, very excited about using them. They are so super cute. I'm going to stick to the disposables overnight for the next little bit until we get used to them, how they fit and how much they absorb but hope to be on them full time soon.
In all the time I've been researching them, I have apparently forgotten to talk to my husband about them. When he saw 36 nappies and 40 plus inserts on the line he did a double take! He is actually quite happy about it but was just shocked to see all of them on the line. Oops
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Hugs Cat. Slowly but surely, you'll get there.
Haha Foss, sounds like what I'd do. Can't believe Liebs was in size 1 nappies for a year and Stormageddon's almost too heavy for them now! He hasn't even worn them all yet lol.
It's hot here, temperature gauge on the side of the house says 36*C. We're stuck indoors as tis too hot for Stormageddon. Even the school run is a bit much and I use the pram cover for that.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Cat I was just thinking of you guys yesterday and wondering how you were getting on.. Poor Amelia.. And poor mama not getting sleep and trying to work out what's happening for her..! Have any of your other kids got allergies?
Foss, woohoo for getting started on the nappies, and double woohoo your hubbie is happy about it. My partner hasn't been too excited about all the washing and trying to understand what insert goes with what cover etc! I think it's going to be easier with osfm nappies for him!
36degrees sounds lovely, it's cold and overcast here today, although I shouldn't complain as yesterday we were out walking on the beach in a singlet and barefoot!
Speaking of sleep, Bub is starting to get into some sort of routine overnight now- feed at 9pm then 12-1 then 3-4 then 5-6 then sleeps a bit more.. It's working for us, as long as I get a good stint of 3-4 hours myself then we are ok!

Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Predictable sleep rocks. When Stormageddon eventually managed to sleep last night he did 11.30 to 2.30 (snack from right breast), 2.30 to 7. He normally wakes once in the wee smalls, then again about 5.30ish. He would have done longer but my feeding top and bedsheet were soaked and I was spraying milk everywhere when I changed my breastpad, so I made him feed!
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Oh i know about those milk sprays! Sometimes at night half asleep I am feeding her and she suddenly fusses and starts to cry and I look down and realise she has slipped off the breast and milk is sprayed all over her face!
Although, I feel my milk supply/breasts have settled a bit in the last week. They don't get as full and hard as they did before and I am not going through as many breast pads now. At night though I have taken to using face washers folded over and now using a prefold across both breasts and this works really well to prevent leaks at night! My partner thinks it's hilarious!
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Yay for the 4 and a half hour stint ca plane!
I am also using washable breast pads. Figure I'm doing washing anyway so may as well chuck them in. Luckily my friends have a small business making baby goods so I have an easy supply. Now to convince them to make mcns and I'll be set. Some mornings when we wake up, it is funny to see the full amount of spray on our leather couch where I feed.
36 degrees is really hot! Don't blame you for keeping the little one inside.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Such a good idea with the flat nappy, Danie. I will give that a go. I'm jealous of the settling down of your breasts, mine still fluctuate. But Stormageddon feeds so well in the day and not so much at night, there is a real difference. I leaked so much yesterday I tried to convince Liebling he needed a bm soaked pad on his injury. He disagreed.
Also on the washable pads, Foss, from what I heard the disposable ones are sharp and nasty. Plus I have loads of nappies and pads from Liebling's babyhood.
Stormy usually gets at least one 4hr+ sleep at night, five and a half hours was the longest so far. I am so rested! Still tired every evening, but that's cos I am Stormageddon's feeding station for 6-8 hours a day.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
I am sick :(
I think Tigger must have known because he slept from 8pm to 4am last night. I couldn't believe it. I also forgot my breast pads so woke up in a sea of milk. Poor little fella was starving when he woke up.
We are on day 2 of mcns and loving them heaps. The only thing I haven't worked out yet is how to effectively get Piglet's solid poops off easily with the bamboo liner. Still quite messy and disgusting. Once I work that out it will be perfect. We are still using disposabls at night to use up our stash but funnily, both kids disposables leaked last night.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Poor you, Foss. Get well soon. With solid poo, I used to put the liner in the loo basin, hold the least soiled end, then flush. Got most of it off that way. Hth.
I had a bad incident yesterday. Walking to the shops, had to pass a bunch of preschoolers playing on a statue while their mothers sat a way off chatting. Children on opposite side of statue to mums, could easily fall off and bang head etc. Now, I feel about preschoolers the way most feel about teenagers. I really don't enjoy that age group.
One little turd appeared nice at first. "Oh look, a baby" he said as I walked past. Cute. Then: "shoot the baby, pewpewpewpew". He said it again.
I was mad. I turned around and told him shooting babies is not cool. Didn't shout, hit him, go near him in fact.
His mum then shouts at me. Cos boys will be boys, what's my problem. Ffs, her turdbag thinks it's ok to shoot a baby! She was in my face and aggressive. I walked off. Her boy just learnt shooting babies is ok and there is nothing so evil he can do that mummy won't disapprove of. But I'm still shaking and fearful of going out now. I'm still going out, have to, school run etc, but I'm not comfortable. DH's job means the whole family are at risk, so someone could try and kill my newborn. We try to minimise the risk, but it's something I don't take lightly. And it's never too early to tell children not to shoot or pretend shoot people unless in a mutually agreed game. And never shoot at newborns. Especially not newborns whose mothers know how to kill (disclaimer, through my university education, not through killing lots of people).
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
That sounds horrible. I haven't had to deal with the gun thing yet but I'm pretty adamant that my kids don't need toy guns. Will be interesting to see what happens when the family does water guns at Christmas...
I tried the toilet thing but it didn't get rid of anything so I must not be doing it properly. I will work something out, it is just awkward until then.
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Hi ladies. Gosh it has been hard to get on the laptop. I will read back through soon hopefully. I hope your all going well. Bubbas growing beautifully I bet.
DS is such a wonderful baby given everything he has been through.
We still don't know what happened to DS. We were very lucky to get him to the hospital when we did, we could have faced a very different outcome even by waiting a couple of hours. His sodium levels were so high they were worried about brain damage and his blood sugar were so low and he was classed as septic. He had milk jaundice that was not to bad but treated too. He had urates in his urine even though he kept weeing. He also lost a lot of weight very quickly. Thankfully all testing they have done has come back clear, even though I would have liked answers the main thing is he is getting better. Our biggest issue is getting weight on him now. It has been a very slow road with steps forward followed by steps back. This week has been good though so I am hoping we are over the hurdle and from here on out his weight goes up.

Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Glad to hear things are looking up Kazzo.
We (kids and I) are all sick. I have a feeling I've got tonsillitis again. Tends to happen when I get run down. I was one bout away from having them removed when I was a kid but the threat scared the disease away. It has just started up again since I've had the kids, normally about the two to three month mark. I think once they get down to a longer sleep at night, my body relaxes and lets the germs in. Hopefully the cold doesn't develop into this for the kids. Doctors appointment tomorrow morning.
Hope things are okay after your situation the other day ca plane
-
Re: Babies Born ~ April 2015
Hugs Kazzo, sounds horrific. Hope you are out the other side now and things improve.
Tonsillitis is bad too Foss, virtual hugs to you too.
We're ok, Stormageddon on a growth spurt so feeding more again, can't complain though. I'm just grateful all is ok with him and Liebling. Also how much my Church family are a family and help me with my boys whenever, wherever. I'm very blessed. Even just sitting with Liebs when taking the bus so I know he's not getting up to anything when not sitting with me. Can't imagine parenting without other people now. Thankfully counting my blessings helps me just feel sad for that other woman, who clearly does not have help or support and clearly needs it. We all do.
