Twins Or Not???
Hi there everyone :D
I am just curious how many of you out there that have had twins can shed some light on the subject for me?
This is my first pregnancy and i am only about five weeks i haven't ad my scan yet. I am a bit chubby around the mid section ( prior to pregnancy:lol:) but i am feeling very bloated already and quite firm down low like i cant hold my stomach in anymore and i was wondering, when you are pregnant with twins does it make a difference early on in the pregnancy. Because i realise i am to early to show yet. just a bit confused. :bellygrowing:
-
i would imagine it would make a difference though perhaps not at 5 weeks... do you have a lot of multiples in your family??? sorry I am not much help, I only have 1 growing in here!!! But I was v bloated and puffy in the first few weeks, I felt like I was 'showing' though now that i look back it was just bloating!!!
-
Yeah on my DF's side there are plenty, but you are prob right. Just some serious bloating lol. Not much fun.
-
I'm not 100% on this, but I believe twins have to run in the mothers family for the likely hood of having them urselves to increase significantly. Having said that, there is always a tiny chance of ANYONE having twins because blastys can split for no apparent reason too! and women can ov from both ovaries or two eggs at once....
Best way to know would be pgcy levels. If they are much higher than ur dates, you'd be sus....
-
I think everyone is different hun. Ho ever you are you are normal for your own body ATM for either twins or not....who knows maybe triplets???? :cryinglaugh:
My girlfriend is preggers with twins and 13wks at that, and no sign yet really, just a tiny tiny bump so far. And she has had 2 pregnancies before, both tiny too.
My two pregnancies on the other hand have been HUGE!! and the second time quicker then the first. Just genetics sometimes too, our family retains alot of fluid during our pregnancies.
Sorry about the BLAH BLAH.
HTH
In general you do get bigger earlier with twins and feel even more nauseated and m/s all day etc double the hormones and bub space.
-
Thanx for the help guys :-) much appreciated. i was just a little confused how it all works. But like you said everyone is different.
I like the idea of twins hehe :-) but no thanx to triplets lol
-
Yeah lots of people get bloated, but the morning sickness and hormone levels can be a good indicator.
Twins don't have to follow the mothers side either. but identical twins normally follow fathers side and Fraternal the mothers or vice versa.
-
This pregnancy was fraternal twins... I didn't experience any significant bloating. My morning sickness was quite severe - but i'm not so sure that was because of twins, as one didn't finish developing and i was still quite sick up until a few weeks ago.
-
:twin_neutral:
Fraternal can only be from the mothers side.....it has only got to do with ovulating multiple eggs....nothing else so Daddy has nothing to do with it except fertilizing those released eggs.
Identical is just a freak of nature when the egg completely splits and hasn't been proven to be genetic yet but could come from either side of the family in theory. Identical twins do however have a high rate of their own identical twin children.
Just had to say that coz sometimes it can be confusing:confused:
-
I was/am bloated but it seams worse in the afternoon it's slowly getting more and more noticable to me anyway. I couldn't do up my jeans from about 6 weeks onwards. This is my 3rd plus I have a few kgs left over from life  I also have a short waiste sounds weird but I'm only 5ft and my stomach doesn't have alot of room to hide a baby even if it is only the size of a grapefruit
-
yeah i feel the same, like my jeans all ready feel heaps tighter and the baby is the size of an apple seed lol. I must just be bloating :-(
-
yeah it's pretty uncomfortable isn't it? I can only eat small portions or it hurts, and I wear my jeans undone with a long top to cover it lol
-
Sally, twins would be so exciting!!!! I hope you are carrying twins! That would be a "double" miracle wouldn't it!!?! :P
My DF has twins on his family side.... i wonder if we'll have them?
(from a website).....
Factors that increase the odds of having twins
Some women are more likely than others to give birth to twins. The factors that increase the odds include:
Advancing age of the mother - women in their 30s and 40s have higher levels of the sex hormone oestrogen than younger women, which means their ovaries are stimulated to produce more than one egg at a time.
Number of previous pregnancies - the greater the number of pregnancies a woman has already had, the higher her odds of conceiving twins.
Heredity - a woman is more likely to conceive fraternal twins if she is a fraternal twin, has already had fraternal twins, or has siblings who are fraternal twins.
Race - Black African women have the highest incidence of twins, while Asian women have the lowest.
Assisted reproductive techniques - many procedures rely on stimulating the ovaries with fertility drugs to produce eggs and, often, several eggs are released per ovulation.
-
I have 11 month old fraternal twin girls.I had my suspicions at 6 weeks that I may be carrying twins as I was starting to show.I did'nt have any morning sickness just really tired.
Identical twins are a fluke of nature where the egg is split in two and it can happen to anybody.
Fraternal twins are genetic and comes about when a woman ovulates 2 eggs that are fertilised by 2 sperm. The mother or father can pass this gene onto a daughter as in my case my father passed on the gene to me.He has fraternal boy/girl twin cousins. My girls now have an even greater chance of conceiving twins as ther is the gene from me and also they are fraternal twins which makes them concieving twins 1 in 17.(thats pretty high)I believe I also have a 1 in 4 chance of conceiving twins next pregnancy.
How exciting if you are carrying twins it really is a blessing....
-
oH by the way we found out at our 8 week scan that we were having twins and at our 13 week scan they looked for a 3rd baby.I told the sonographer that I could deal with twins but no so sure about triplets.I've had a premonition that next pregnancy I will have triplets..Scary.:help:
-
twins! I'd love twins. I have always found twins fascinating! My dh's mum is a non-identical twin, I have identical twin cousins and my dh has a cousin who had twins. Get your dr to check your hormone levels. I've heard that they're higher with twins
Good luck!
-
I must be an abnormal twin carrier as my hormone levels were'nt any higher than if I were carrying a singleton..I must be strange.
-
Hi,
I am a mummy of Fraternal Twins from IVF - ICSI I had 2 frozen embies put in. (my babies are 2 tomorrow Yippeee) Sorry for that info just excited. I didnt even feel pg and was not sick at all with the twins. However with this pg (only 1 baby) I am still sick at 30wks. Good luck with your twins. Its twice the fun.
Pansy- At the start b4 I had a scan they said my levels were for a singleton. However I just had a very tiny twin.
-
Hi everyone :-) i do hope i am having twins that would be amazing. I guess i will find out when i have my scan. I have only had the a couple of blood tests but the doctor never mentioned the levels being high. So i don't know i am prob just wishful thinking hehe.
-
My levels were very high...
-
Sallymarie when are you booked in for your scan? You will have to let us know.;)
-
Hi Sallymarie,
My mum had twins. They are now 29, so back in the day there were no scans etc prior to 18 weeks. So she had no idea until almost half way through and she didn't look any different then a person with 1 baby. It wasn't until the 2nd half of her preg that things become noticably bigger.
With a strong line of twins on both sides of the family I was REALLY worried about having twins. I have never wanted twins and that didn't change when I got pregnant. By 12 weeks I had been feeling bloated and thought my belly was bigger (which I felt was far too early to grow) so took myself to the Dr and asked for a scan. When we only saw one baby I was so releaved!
It all sounds like a pretty normal pregnancy to me.
Mum says the biggest difference is the morning sickness is frequent, intense and for her didn't stop until after she had given birth to them!
Hope this helps! Take care
-
each twin pg is different. you HCG levels at your first b/t are a good indication. 750 and above is pg positive. Mine with my twins was 2,250 and i was only 3 1/2 weeks.
a scan is the only real way.
good luck and let us know how you go
-
Thankyou guys, my scan is the 24th July so i can't wait. I think i will be sort of disapointed if is isn't twins. BUT still happy if it is a healthy baby with a nice strong heart beat. :-)
-
Does getting a really strong and quick positive HPT before AF is due possibly mean it could be twins? My HPT (pictured in my sig) was strong and positive in less than a minute on CD 27, 1 day before AF was due. I didn't expect it to be so strong so quickly that early
-
Danni, mine was the same. It was a couple of days b4 my AF was due and i got the pos in less then a min.... ???
-
I don't know when I'm having my first ultrasound. I've booked in for my first check up at my GP's office on 7th August. (doing shared care). I guess she'll go through everything I need to know.
There is a big history of twins in my family. My Nanna had 2 sets of unidentical twins (11 months apart!), my aunty miscarried 1 set of twins and then miscarried half of another set of twins (one of them was born and is in his late 20's now). I think apparently there are also twins on Matt's side of the family.
I sometimes can feel when I double ovulate therefore know that it's possible for me to have twins and this cycle I had what looked like 2 ovulation dips and 2 implantation dips
-
Good luck with your appointment, let us know how you go. :-) sounds like twins might be on the cards for you ...
-
wow that would be great, twins! keep us posted
-
I had 2 singleton pg's, then I had twins. I was only just over 30, & the only twins in the family was that my great-grandfather was a twin, so nobody suspected I could be pg with twins.
My tummy expanded really quickly, and by 12 weeks it looked like I was at least 20/25 weeks pg. I had more morning sickness, & I was always very tired.
-
WOW I love all this twin talk....hope we all are lucky enough to be blessed with double ;)
Let everyone know girls either way.
I get so excited when twins are mentioned!!:twin_neutral:
-
Hi Sallymarie,
I'm glad you asked the question because it was running through my head as well. We have twins on both side of the family so I guess that genetically we'd have a higher chance. We did IVF so the embryo would have had to have split once it went back in. It would be so exciting to find out we we were having twins, either way I'll just be happy to have a live baby in my arms at the end of it. Our 8 wk scan is on the 19th.
-
Hi Janie... I am so excited 4 u i hope i have twins... :-) i am hoping for twins to but i am thinking the same just one little healthy bundle of joy will make me happy. Good luck with your scan. Let me know how you get on.
Sally :-)
-
Thanks so much, will let you know - good luck with yours as well.
How scary would twins be - the thought of one scares me but I still can't wait.
-
Yeah same, sounds fun. And i am sure it will be BUT double the trouble, mess, money, worry etc.... LOL but also double the happiness :-)
-
you may be able to go for an ultrasound now if you girls are seriously interested in finding out. You can go direclty to a private clininc for an ultrasound- you just have to pay
I found out i was having twins at 6 weeks, 6 days via dildo cam at my FS office
so anytime after 7 weeks you should be able to see how many sacs, just may not be able to see heartbeats yet.
good luck
