Let's all put together a list of what we think are the best things about being a new mum for the very first time. How many things can we come up with? Lots I am sure! I will start!
1. Realising that it is possible to deeply love two people at once.

3 - Just hearing that gorgeous newborn cry.
I hear it in the supermarkert or somewhere now and realise how much I miss it.
Love
4. The Newborn smell...my baby (toddler  ) has nearly lost that baby smell! *waaaaaaah*
*hugs*
Cailin
Well Im not a mum just yet, but I am a Auntie and godmother and I can definatly say the best thing about a new born is when they start crying and you have absolutly no idea why... You can always hand them back! lol :D
When I was pregnant in 2001 a friend from work had a baby about 6 months before I was due and I saw her/them in hospital and this wee little 12 hour old baby cried and it sounded like music or a kitten meowing. I couldn't understand why people didn't love this sound !
Six months later, I don't think I ever thought my baby's crying was musical, especially at 2,3,4,5 am !
Just watching them and wanting to hold them all the time.
Barb.
- watching a totally brand new innocent human sleep
- those breast feeding sticky out lips and set back chin..so cute
- the noises they make after a feed
- when they sleep on your heart just to listen to go to sleep
- when they start to gain weight, feeling their tiny hands fill out
- their skin, it is like nothing else..
- knowing now a tiny piece of your heart exists outside your body
It's all good!
The idea that you brought this wonderful person into the world.
Falling asleep together while breastfeeding.
Pushing a pram down the street and getting stopped by strangers oohing and ahing. (This one does have it's drwbacks)
Being called a mummy.
Being loved unconditionally.
Buying baby clothes-the BEST fun in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And everything else others have mentioned except the crying.................
Jo
I agree with Cailin - The newborn smell, and picking them up to comfort them when they cry and they slow their crying down from a continous cry to a slight wah......silence......wah. almost like a little lamb, if this makes sense to anyone?? My daughter use to do this for my mum and DH but not me. Darn it, now i've gone and got myself all clucky again!
Nic.
that newborn smell.. those little cuddly adorable bodies to cuddle.. hearing them cry and knowing its you there crying for.. giving a relative a cuddle and they get upset becuse they want there mummy and thats you so u get tohave them back and reassure them..
oh how i miss it *sniff sniff*
Oooooh, reading all these posts makes me well up with happy tears!
The best bit for me is their snuggly bodies.......the way they fall asleep on your shoulder and snuggle into your neck.
And babies heads.....their heads smell so adorable, I could sniff Olivia's head all day!
I have nothing to add yet... but i do agree with Lucy..... i got happy tears, i cant wait to be a mum, and experience all of these wonderful things (and the bad stuff too)
Beautiful words girls =D>
It would have to be ...... so hard to pick. Definately the smell of them when they snuggle up to you.
The softness of the back of their neck.
Going to sleep with them on the boob and waking with them so close to you.
Their sweet baby breath (without the vomit smell)
Oh the list could just go on and on.
Take care
Trish
Everything!!!!!
The way they smell.
The way they look so content when asleep.
The way they recognise you and only want you within hours of being born.
The new found confidence you get when you realise you are responsible for a life.
The sound of a burp after a feed.
The way their skin is so soft and perfect.
They give you the best possible reason for living.
a big loud burp
that just clean baby smell
the first smiles
watching them for hours and never getting bored
the way thier chin wags when they feed
there are so many cute and wondeful things about having your very own new born I could go all night.
Bumping this up as there are lots new mums and new mums to be
The best thing about a newborn is
- watching them sleep, so contented
- feeling their breath on you when they are snuggled up
- seeing their first smiles
- the little cries they make - so cute!
- seeing Dad with them and realising that now there is proof of your love together
:D
Being content to sit and marvel at them while the sleep, their facial expression when you come to pick them up, the noises they make when feeding, smiles, each milestone and just realising how much it is possible to love someone.
~Seeing them happy and babbling away to themselves.
~That new baby smell.
~Smiles and laughes.
~When their crying and no one but you is able to stop them just by picking them up.
* That baby smell for sure :D
* The little gurgles he makes when he is happy
* The snuggling up against my neck
* When he sleeps!
The funny faces they pull! Gabby pulls this crack-up funny face when she is about to yawn!!
Oh, and she rolls her eyes when she is windy!! Very funny!
One of the things I loved the most was when my baby would wake up after a sleep. I would miss her and would hover around when she was due to wake up. Of course after her feed and having a few minutes with her, I wouldn't have minded if she'd gone back to sleep!!
Also I just loved (and still do 6 years on) kissing her constantly. And just watching. I could watch my child forever and just be in awe. xo
i agree with all of your comments ...
I am still in awe of my 14 year old, she is so beautiful and talented.
I am in wonderment of my 4 month old ... as I watch her and think of all the possibilities for her and wonder !!
I love to look into their eyes and feel the deep connection I feel as their mother ! it is truly inspiring and worthwhile !
They are the best I could every do !!!
I sometimes feel that I am too lucky and that I don't deserve to be so happy !! with my 1st child I thought it was all too good to be true and that something awful would befall us .....
children are so precious .... and the best thing about babies is their trust in our love for them !!! :D
*bump*
Aawwww these are lovely! Makes me want my own NOW :D hhmmm maybe I'll go check out the 'hardest thing' thread to come back down to earth :D
Awww! Reading this has just made me forget how hard it can be and made me focus on how great it is.
Gazing into each others eyes after a feed when they're all sleepy is the best
Seeing a happy smile, especially for Daddy
And everything else that has already been said.
I feel so lucky to be a mum.
When they are born and you know your baby's cry straight away - this is truly amazing. And when they fall asleep on your chest - hearts connected. I miss that.
can someone collate the list as a whole - all of the above ...it has all been said - for me it is the most wonderful feeling snuggling a precious baby to the beat your heart and feeling their warmth and then another.
newborn babies are so much fun -especially when there is more than one :babyboy: :babyboy:
- being stopped and your babies admired by strangers ...
def the newborn smell
the feeling of knowing you created such a beautiful litte person
the pouty lips at booby time
the smiles & giggles
All the "firsts"
the first meeting & the overwhelming happiness it brings to you, over all the tiredness pain, it carries you into a state of pure bliss!
their soft brand new skin, just to touch it - its unexplainable
this list could go on for days!!
those little fingertips on your bare skin
Knowing that you are their world. No one can settle them as well, know them as well, or love them as much as you do.
For me it would have to be the little smile of contentness she gives just as she is drifting off to sleep & and seeing her with her daddy makes myheart lmost explode with love.
I agree with all of these.
The amazement that this new person in the world came from you and your partner can't be put into words.
It's like Christmas every time you see them...
Everything about them makes you cry happy tears...
Oh I have to stop, now I'm crying and I want another baby already!!
Its pretty much all been said...
for me its:
- her beautiful smell
- the first breast feed- just amazing, thats when i fell in love
- the way she never fails to give the biggest cheesy grin every time her daddy says "Daddy's home!", even if its a weekend and hes been looking after her all day!! lol
This is sooo sad, shes not a new born anymore. It seems like it only lasted a week! :crying:
They can't answer back or get away from you??? Naaah.... j/k
Their smell... it's intoxicating! I used to sniff Gabby for hours! LOL
In fact... I still use lux flakes to wash her clothes just because it reminds me of her as a newborn!! ;)
Those special little smiles that only you get!! Gabby and I had special "Mummy-Gabby" smiles that Neil didn't get for a couple of weeks.
Those magnificent cuddles! I don't get them anymore unless Gabby is unwell (so I get snot and tears along with the cuddles now, LOL).
The teeny-tiny little clothes. Just soooo cute! It's nice dressing a doll!
LOL Deb, I'm still using the same shampoo on Zander for that very reason!
For me it has to be the first smile. Josh looks up at me with such joy..... it seems like i am his world to him, and no-one else has that special connection.
