Hey there,
I have suffered from heartburn/reflux since week 7 so I'm pretty much an expert.
Don't lie down after eating, huge no no!
Milk, icecream & chewies are supposed to help with the acid.
I have asked my specialist who says mylanta is fine to take & you can't really take too much so have as much as you need.
Spicy foods, cool drinks also make things worse.
Hopefully some of these things help you.

Dh - 34
Second chlomid / IUI March 2007 - :bfp:
Gaviscon!! Make sure you get the peppermint sort cos the aniseed is horrible!!
I got it dreadfully at the end of my pg, but it mostly affected me in the evenings. I found chewing on a rennie (or two if it was baaaad) before brushing my teeth worked for me. Also, it turned me off really flavoursome food unfortunately... I found bland stuff was less likely to give me heartburn. HTH and all the best for your pregnancy!
Hi - milk helped for me, mylanta and also zantac which was ok for me to take in the 3rd trimester but just check with your pharmacist re first and second trimesters. Avoid acidic food and lying down after eating. Also, not eating anything for longer periods (being greater than a couple of hours!) also caused me to get severe heartburn. So eating helped too. Goodluck, i'm afraid to say it will probably get worse before it gets better - nasty stuff!
I understand - I get it sometimes after eating and sometimes when I'm really hungry! Best things for me are:
*Milk drink
* chewable rennie
*building up your pillows in bed so gravity keeps the digestive acids down (this is the best)
Hope that some of these suggestions help.
I find black tea makes mine worse, so I guess that's another thing to avoid.
Thanks for the advice ladies!
Last night about an hr after dinner i had a glass of milk...which made it better but not go away! Then about an hr after that i snuggled into bed and squished my pillow up under my head (two pillows gives me bad neck/head ache) and guess what... gone! i slept beautifully! :)
Hi,
I am 18 wks pg and have suffered only a little with hb over the last couple of wks (thankfully). My cousin is a midwife and she said that apple juice, either full strength or watered down, can help. I haven't tried it as it has mostly occured when I go to bed and I figure that I will fall asleep faster than it takes for me to get out of bed and go to the kitchen!! It's also too cozy to get out of bed!! Hope that this helps. Nicole
I suffered terrible last time and this time too so I feel for you!
The pillow thing is great and I also found that the lollies called Fruity Tingles work a treat :D like antacids but taste yummy and the worst thing in them is sugar I guess.....
I found that the kind of food I ate made no difference, I could have Thai and not get it and then bland veges and get it BAD!
Mine did not stop until DD was born so hang in there.
All the best.
I used LOTS of rennie and mylanta. Milk also worked well if there was no antacids handy. I had to stay up after eating for about an hour before going to bed otherwise the heartburn would be SOOOO bad.
Bread seemed to make me have bad heartburn. Chocolate and also Nutella was also guilty of giving me bad bad heartburn - pity too because I LOVE eating those two things.
thanks again girls, my OB had suggested Mylanta and gaviscon.. but i'm not sure i want to take them... yesterday i felt like it was coming back, so i had a milo ice-cream :D yummo and it just stopped instantly! So i think i'll see how i go with the home remedies.. i'll try the fruit tingles too! and if it gets worse or i can't control it.. i'll try an antacid!
What i eat doesn't effect me either... the night i got it real bad, all i ate was rice, salad and potatoes! but if i eat something spicy.. i don't get it...*shrug* i think it may have something to do with the amount of dairy that i eat/drink in the day that day i hadn't had much except what i put on my cereal..usually i have at least 2 glasses + cheese
Hey Haroula,
I had the worst bout of hb a couple of weeks ago and thought that my chest had a knife sticking into it. Had one chewable zantac and 2 hours later it went away. I am 22 weeks pg with twins and it was the first hb i have ever had in my life. I hope that it never happens again!! I understand the desperation of women trying to find a solution for this painful ailment. My greek mother and her friends say that hair is growing on the babies heads and that is what causes it. Funny wives tales. Its even funnier as dh and i are not hairy people at all!! Greeks!!
xoxoxo Gina
hey Gina! I hear you on the Greek thing! as you could probably tell from my name! LOL that's what i've heard around the traps too! hahaha but i don't believe it... more like uterus is squishing my stomach! LOL
i used to get it once in a blue moon anyway when i used to have a lot of lemon and salt on something but i'm off lemon now... weird ha! LOL and i know it's not food now...! ohh well
Hi Haroula,
I think your right. Its the squishing not the hair. How funny! You know about the greek thing - thank god someone understands what i mean!!
hahahahhahahahha
xoxoxox Gina
haha well it helps to understand the "greek" thing if you got greek parents! LOL
Hi Haroula,
Can you feel your baby moving yet? I started to in the last couple of weeks feel my twin boys!! Last night my dh put his ear to my tum tum and got whacked by one or both of them - right on his ear!! We were in stitches for ages. I hope you get a cool surprise like it did. I had to share with someone. Hope you dont mind listening to my story last night.
Are you going to find out the sex of your little one? These are our first bubs too. Its very exciting!
PS -Milk works for heartburn. Its the only thing that works properly so far without taking pharmacuticals.
xoxoxo Gina
hi Gina!
i think i feel the butterfly movement... but it's hard to tell yet... hoping that bubs will give me a nice surprise soon and i'll be able to feel the kicking before 20 weeks! :) i'm hanging out! Yeah we will be finding out what we are having! there's no way i can wait until term to know! hahaha
I've been trying the milk thing too! so far so good!
PS i don't mind listening! :)
Hi Haroula,
Had heartburn this morning!! Milk didnt help!! Just suffered in silence for a couple of hours. Take back yesterdays comment. Yes I know - Hypocrite. Just joking - hahahahaha. It really did hurt. Too much chilli last night maybe. Had Thai chicken laksa.
You will have to let us know if boy or girl. I am so excited for you!! Its great to meet someone else at a similar point to our pg. I am sure your bubs will give you both a surprise real soon. It is usually when you least expect it!
xoxoxo Gina
ps: Thanks for listening again! :)
sorry to hear about your heartburn Gina!hope it's better now... it can really hurt!
hmmm so far spicy food hasn't effected me! but it is common i hear!
hi ladies,
i too was having extremely bad hb which i was getting everyday all day. it didnt matter what i ate pr didnt eat.
quickease didnt work, mylanta made me gag and milk made it worse.
what i did find that works is PEARS.
i know it sounds weird, but it actually works.
also, fizzy drinks worked as well, i think it has something to do with making you burp.
take care
Hiya,
When I was in my first trim, I used to get hb pretty bad. Then someone told me to eat foods that where easily digested and light, like white bread instead of brown. It really worked for me. Your stomach just has to work really hard to digest everything, and this way your making it somewhat easier on your stomach.
HTH!
Hi Haroula,
I have suffered with a bit of hb for the last few wks but nothing too bad (thankfully) and I get it at the strangest times!! I haven't tried anything as yet to help with it but it was suggested to me that apple juice is great for settling it down a bit! When I get an awful bout of it I will certainly be trying it as i want to keep anything "foreign" out of me as much as possible.
Hang in there. Nicole
HI ladies,
since that last episode, i haven't had it again.. so fingers crossed it's has gone away!!
thanks
