Hi everyone
I am just interested to know how many first time mums had premmie or overdue babies? Is it uncommon to give birth on the due date? It seems that most people I know have overdue bubs with their first...is this a pattern?
Thanks

It is only something like a 4% chance of having your baby on your EDD. You may want to check out This Thread has some stats that you might find interesting.

Yep Kathryn is right, approx 5% born on their due date with 45% within the two weeks before and 45% within the two weeks after. I am a believer that bubs will come when they are ready and only they will know that ;) Both of mine were early, the first was 3 days, the second 9 days.
Alex was five weeks early, but I was sick with pre-eclampsia.
Most of my friends have been overdue with their first but it all depends!
Thanks ladies! The reason I ask is, my 12 month waiting period for private health is May 13, and if I fall pregnant this month the EDD would probably be around 10 days after that. Just wondering if I am cutting it a bit fine. I guess it is all up to fate! :-s
41 weeks 1 day for me :)
With my 1st--35weeks 5 days.
With my 2nd--35weeks and 6 days.
I only have 1 and yes he was VERY overdue (41+6days), unfortunately it might be hard to pick which way you're little bean will come out!
I think it has to do with your cycle, mine is 31 days, so therefore my gestation was longer..anyone agreewith that theory?
That happened to me with my private health insurance, my EDD with Marisa was the 15th April which was EXACTLY 12 months to the day I signed up for health insurance - how was that for unconcious knowing!
Because her EDD was earlier, all I needed was a note from the Ob saying that she was indeed due on that day and came early on her own account. So they don't worry about it too much, as long as the EDD is on that day of the 12th month or later it doesn't matter if she / he comes early or late.
She still is a really little one Kellie LMAO ;):

Hendrix was born at 39 weeks to the day.
Aidyn was born at 39 weeks + 1 day.
My 1st was born 35 weeks 5 days and my 2nd 36 weeks 6 days.
Both born early due to me having pre-eclampsia.
Nicholas was born @ 40 weeks and 3 days .
Thanks everyone! We are just going to go for it and see what happens! ;) Hopefully we'll be joining the May pregnancy buddies thread with any luck!
Kelly do you think this is generally accepted with most insurance companies?:
I would say so. I am with Medibank Private at the moment but it doesn't hurt to check and ask what happens if the EDD is after the 12 months but baby is born early. You could even reference my story I guess and ask if that's what they do... I have found a few people that have actually been able to haggle with private health companies of late so you never know ;)
Thanks Kelly. I'll do that! :D
My first went 40 weeks, 6 days. Hopeing the next is early as he is due Christmas Day #-o .
Amy was born 39 weeks to the day.
my first DS was born at 42 weeks (would've stayed in there is i had let him!!) and second ds was born at 37w (induced due to me being extremely stressed about his size. he was 8lb!!)
Matthew was born 40weeks, 6 days via c/s but if it was left up to him to come I would have been waiting around for another 7 - 10 days so my OB tells me.
Hi,
My first was born at 42weeks 1 day.
Take care Leah :D
Eliza was born 37.5 weeks, due to gest diabetes, and a cervical stitch being removed
Bec
With my first, 38 weeks, but I was induced due to pre-eclampsia. With my second, she was born on her due date based on the ultrasound, and 41 weeks based on LMP.
Bon
Nicholas was 10days overdue and i had to be induced which ended in an emergency c-section
Ryan was 10 days early because he turned breech so i had a repeat c-section
Matthew arrived on his due date after me having early contractions 4 days before... I was induced the day before to get things happening.
Matilda was born 17 days after her EDD so 42 weeks + 3 days :)
no. 1 was 41 wks +3days
no.2 was 41 wks
no.3 was 41 wks +2 days
and no. 4 was 39wks + 2days.
Mine really liked cooking
Hi,
Mine were No.1 was 5 & half weeks early. I am not sure why he came early but he did. No.2 was induced because I was having a lot of back pain and he was a big size 8 pound 9 ounces with 2 weeks to go, Obs said he would have been over 11 pound if born on time. No.3 was born only 6 days early and No.4 was 3 days overdue and was induced.
I am now pregnant with Number 5 and if it goes by my history this one should be overdue as well.
Michele
Mother of Christopher, Luke, Melissa, Jayden and baby girl due in November
DD1 was exactly 14 days early.
DD2 was 4 days over EDD.
Hmmm I wonder what number 3 will be??
Paris was born 40+3 wks.
And you know, this time I am no way near as impatient about getting bubs out LOL!
*hugs*
Cailin
Mitch4now, were any of yours induced?
So far I am 40+1 day and still counting ...:
Pearl :D
Yep my 3rd was induced, I don't think she ever wanted to come out, but it was February and i was so exhausted I begged to be induced at 8 days and they put me in at 9 days late. Later I thought I should have been stronger and waited but too late now! Funnily I was like Cailin by the time I got to the 4th i was actually in no hurry and she came all by herself 2 days early LOL
Cheers michelle
Wow it's good to know they can still come by themselves even when so late ... most stories I have heard (not many) if it's anything over 41 weeks it's usually induced.:
Me = 40w + 3 days today ... am booked in for induction on Friday if nothing happens by then ...
Pearl :D
My Dr always said he'd allow 10 days over, so you are only going to be allowed 7 days over! I cuoldn't wait the 10 days with the Feb bub though. The others labour started the day bf the actual birth i.e. went into labour on the thursday with no.1 (9days late) and had her just after midnight on day 10. And no.2 went into labour 6 days over and had him at 3.14am on the 7th day late.
Hopefully the bub will come of it's own accord bf hand for you cos I can tell yuo that my naturally beginning labours were way nicer than my induction in that I felt more in control and comfortable than with the induction, and I didn't have a drip either, just gel and then my waters broken! things seem to ease in with a naturally starting labour. Best of luck with whatever way it happens!
Cheers michelle
my first was born at 42w2d, my second at 37w3d. Both were induced (first for obvious reasons, second as i was terrified of him being big like my first - Xander was 9lb2oz, Declan was 8lb, 3 weeks early!!)
With my DS my waters broke smack bang on 40 weeks, and I was induced the day after when nothing happened and had a c/s the day after that when nothing happened a second time.
Hehe I think he had second thoughts about coming out!
I found something very interesting when doing research for some articles:
According to a study on 'The length of uncomplicated human gestation' by the Department of Epidemiology, Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts, they found:
"For primiparas (first child), the median duration of gestation from assumed ovulation to delivery was 274 days, significantly longer than the predicted 266 days. For multiparas (more than one child), the median duration of pregnancy was 269 days, also significantly longer than the prediction. Moreover, the median length of pregnancy in primiparas proved to be significantly longer than that for multiparas"
This is an older study, but very interesting none the less, and just goes to show you how much we rely on dating but it's all up to the mercy of the ultrasound machine guessing for us.
That is very interesting Kelly and I think it is a bit og a farce letting the ultrasounds determine our dates, I don't know of many that have been correct. Look at me with 3 late and only 1 early.
Something to think about, and if the ultrasound is way out then baby could be brought on too early. A relative of mine had a cs, for medical reasons, it was her 3rd and somehow they stuffed up the dates and it appeared that instead of being 38 wks her bub was 36 wks, his lungs were not very well devekloped and the dr apologised for doing it too early.
