Hi ladies
Is there a book that is currently being read for the book club?
Is there still a book club happening?? :)
Good question - currently there is no book but if there is enough interest we could probably start it up again :)
Do you have a book in mind?
Hi Dach
No I don't have a book in mind, something crime / thriller would be great if there is enough interest on that subject...otherwise I'm open to anything really.
Lets see if we can drum up some interest and get this started!!
Count me in!
Just an idea - I am just about to start reading Jodi Picoults latest called 19 minutes which is about an horrific school shooting which sounds really interesting so if people think this would be a good one to start with thats great if not no woories. I always love to hear other recommendations.
Count me in too - I'm in 3 book clubs through Dymocks as I read all the time!
I can recommend a few good ones if we're stuckon getting started - Otherwise I'm happy to read anything! :D
Just wondering how do I join the book club?
I am currently reading 19 minutes but would also be willing to discuss any other book.
Emma - we haven't started yet and you are most welcome to join if it goes ahead!
Does everybody want to give it a go?
Anyone recommend a good book?
Hiya!
I would love to join in too! I am not really into crime/thriller etc, but will give it a go!! :) :)
Count me in. I might take a while to get through the book, but I can always discuss the first chapter LOL!!
I'll hang-around. Don't get much time for reading lately, hopelessly bussy. But I am intressted!! Hopefully you'll talk me into starting to read again - please do!!!
BTW I adore Jodi Picoults books. I read her My Sister's Keeper and can't get the story out of my head. It made real impact on me. I read (LOVE) crime/thrillers, am not really into any romance novels and biografies, but if written well I might just give it a try.
For those who liked 19 minutes, check out We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver.
I might be up for book clubbery - could we complile a list of books, do one a month (or more often) and then folk could dip in and out depending if they have/got/fancied the book and how much time they have?
Bx
thats a great idea Bec.
It would be good to have a variety of types/styles of books too.
Count me in too! I love Jodi Picoult books and have recently read My Sister's Keeper and am no onto The Tenth Circle, and have bought the Harvest ""something - can't remember the name!!"". I will buy 19 minutes though and get reading!
Ooh Im in!! I love Jodi Picoult - just read My Sisters Keeper and Vanishing Act which was excellent too.
So 19 minutes is it???
ok I love to read even though if I get to into a book I'm not a nice person to be around until I have read it all lol as I have to read it so fast then I alway have to go back and read it again. I loved my sisters keeper made cry like a baby but for me thats not hard as I alway cry ( even when watching neighbours and home and away ) so are we going to start with 19 minutes if so I will try and go out a buy it this week.

So 19 minutes it is then?
Ok girls, as I've never actually been in a book club before I'm not quite sure how it works, can someone tell me how it goes?? :)
I'm about a third of the way through 19 minutes and am still happy to discuss it! I think Jodi Picoult is a wonderful writer. I've also read My Sisters Keeper, The Tenth Circle and The Pact. The Pact was such a good book that I read it in a few days whilst on honeymoon!
Bec - I suggested We Need To Talk About Kevin to someone else who loved 19 minutes in another thread!!!!
I just loved it!!!
Girls, I am happy to read anything & discuss it - How do we make the decision what we are reading, when do we start, do we do it monthly, etc???
I'm happy to offer some advice - I'm in a few bookclubs.
Basically we all nominate a book or 2 so we have a list, and then decide which book from there.
We usually give it a month if its average size (approx 300 - 500 pages), and then discuss it, and choose the next one & go again!!!
It seems like 19 minutes sounds popular on here - I'm happy to read anything!
Even if we choose a book thats terrible, its always a good discussion!!!!!
Sounds good to me Holly, I've got no problem with 19 minutes.
Does everyone else agree? Feel free to suggest another book if you want :)
I just bought 19 minutes so it sounds like a great idea to me! Just give me a couple of days to start reading it please!!
sounds fine to me.
Excellent :D
I don't want to be a bossy boots though!
Whatever you guys think!!!
I guess wait and see who posts on here for a few days and then give us a month from then to read it??
I don't want to be an organiser - I feel like I'm being a try hard moderator!!!!!
Maybe I should contact a mod???
Let me know what you guys think!!!
Happy for you to lead Holly, it's nice to have someone who knows what they're doing!!
I agree, wait a few days to see who's interested and give us all time to purchase the book then give it a month for us to read and then we shall discuss :)
how about a set date for starting, say 15th October - thats mid month, easy to remember and will give those of us who are borrowing the book from the library sdome time to secure a copy!
What do others think?
Sounds good to me ray!!
Sounds like a plan! :D
Lets start Mon 15th, and give ourselves til 15th November to read it!
Are you guys happy with 19 minutes?
I've read 'We Need To Talk About Kevin', which is along similar lines... one lady from my book club has read both and said they're both worth reading.
So glad we're getting started - and that gives a week for anyone else reading here to start with us too!!!
In the old book club a new book would be announced on the 15th of the month. It gave everyone 2 weeks to secure their copy and then people could start reading/discussing from the 1st of the following month, and new book would be announced again during that month but discussion would still be happening for the current book.
Love
I knew it was something like that Kathryn, I couldn't remember.
What do you guys think? I'm sue anyone who has thte book now or gets it earlier can starat reading, but just no discussion priot to the first?
Or are we champing at the bit and can't wait that long?
That sounds great, Kathryn!!!
So we pick the book soon & start reading on 1st Nov, ready for a discussion 1st Dec?
I'm happy to do that, I've got enough books to keep me occupied until then!!!!!
Do we want to do 19 minutes, or will we all put a few suggestions in and pick from there? I'm easy!!!
Sounds like a plan to me, start reading 1st Nov (although I'll probably start reading before as I may need to extra 2 weeks to finish it, I'm hopeless!!) and start discussing 1st December...
Open to suggestions of books too...
The way it used to be you started reading and discussing on 1st of the month (so in this case November) but either way is fine with me.
Ray, how does that work given that everyone will probably be up to different parts of the book?
Should we each suggest a few books each and then decide?
I'll start with some;
Tuesdays With Morrie - I read this a really long time ago but would be keen to read it again as an adult - and now as a parent I'm sure it would have more meaning! (Its also very popular in other book clubs - a good one to start with according to the ladies at Dymocks!)
19 minutes - This one seems to be popular on this thread, so I'm ok with this too!
The Pilot's Wife - This is one I've wanted to read for a long time that ladies in other book clubs have said is a good one for debate.
I could go on & on & on - and also with ones I've read that I would re-read again!!!!
There's a few suggestions to start with, anyway :D
Not 100% sure I ojnly did it one time!
There used to be a seperate thread for discussion, and you would headup your post with which chapter it was etc.
In our discussion thread we would do
Chapter 7
And then scroll down some, so if people weren't up to Chapter 7 they didn't have to read that particular post.
We did Tuesdays with Morrie in the Plat book club we had going, it was a good book.
I have seen the movie The Pilots Wife, and mum said there was a book about it too, but I have never read the book.
OK, is the general consensus 19 Minutes? Or would you all like me to set up a poll with the other two books Holly suggested and we go from there? We have a week until the 15th to get it organised.
And don't worry if you don't get it finished by the end of the month - you can still post your review of the book and join in the chatter thread as you go along.
Whatever you guys think!
I would love to hear some suggestions, too - those 3 books are just the first few that came to mind!
I'm happy to read anything, but Kathryn, if you guys have already read Tuesdays With Morrie, you don't want to read it again?!
I think do a poll, but with more books than just the 3 that I suggested... But whatever is easier for everyone ;)
There wasn't very many in the book club Holly so I don't know how many people did end up reading Tuesday's with Morrie. I can just copy my old chat posts about it pmsl. Personally I wouldn't read it again, as I am not one to read the same book twice
Love
It would have to be an exceptional book for me to read it again too - There's too many others out there I want to read!!!
I'm up for anything - But I'll let you guys make the decision :D
Well I can use those suggestions plus any others tht anyone suggests.
