She fell off the change table HEAD FIRST... I feel SO guilty :( Reassurance needed...

I was changing izzy and she is getting harder and harder to distract while getting changed. Anyway she sitting up and almost trying to stand up on it at one stage so I sat her back down, and put one hand on her leg while I bent down to pick up her top and as I stood up she was falling head first onto the floor. :crying: I reached out to grab her but was too slow.

Dh comes barrelling in (SO glad he was home) and I was in absolute hysterics screaming that she had fallen onto her head... she was clinging to me and crying but more in shock than pain plus I was crying which makes her cry. DH was halfway through shaving and I was in my pj's so he raced off to finish shaving so we could take her to the hospital. By the time he finished (not even 5 mins) she had enough cuddles with mummy and wanted to run around the house again so we watched her for another 5 mins while I called Nurse Online. We just need to watch her for the next 2 hours or so but are pretty sure she will be fine, and the nurse said our best bet is to watch her here rather than sit in emergency for 2-3 hours.

I just feel SICK and can't stop seeing her falling and wishing I had laid her down instead of sitting her down, she is just too fast for me. I keep seeing what I should have done, and worry wart that I am keeps wondering if she might have something wrong internally that we can't see. :crying: I can't stop crying about it - she is having a nap now, and I need to wake her in an hour and make sure she responds ok etc.....

I'm not changing her up there anymore, she has been kicking me in the tummy for a few weeks now but habits hold up. Why didn't I just chnage her on the floor for the last few weeks - it never would have happened.....Arrrggghhhhhhh I just feel terrible and horrible and literally feel like Im going to throw up. TMI but I had the runs about 10 mins after we realised she was ok...... I need hugs....:(

awwww hunni dont feel so bad. It happens to kids all the time. Dont ask yourself the "what if's" coz its not going to help. Be thankful that she is fine and she got more of a fright than anything else. Kids are tough :) give her a big hug for me and please dont blame urself, ur a GREAT mum!!

Oh Tan. You are a GREAT mum, these things happen, Izzy is absolutely fine. My Izzy is a complete wriggle on the change table too - its a nightmare. Certainly not helped when you have a growing belly. Please don't beat yourself up over this. Your little princess has not come to any harm - her poor mummy is in far more pain I think. Try to relax and just enjoy a quiet morning with your girl.

You are such a good mummy so don't even think that you are a bad one!!! Accidents happen hon, and as much as we try to protect our children, they will always happen!!!! I'm sure she will be fine :hug:

And for what its worth - I still change DS on the change table, even though he kicks my belly to death every time - I think it hurts more to try to bend over a fat belly if I'm changing him on the floor!!!!!

Tan you are an amazing mum and unfortunately these little kiddies of ours are hurting themselves and are too quick for us. They are small, agile and can dodge us.
It's great to hear that Izzy is okay and please stop beating yourself up. I found Olivia sitting in a pile of washing powder eating it. I freaked out too. No matter how much we watch them we can't watch every second.
You are doing a brilliant job. Have a rest this arvo and have a beautiful cuddle with your gorgeous little princess.

There's another one for good measure, Tan! Take care of yourself. It sounds like Izzy is just fine. I think falling off things onto their heads is kind of like a rite of passage for kids, isn't it?
Just look after yourself and cuddle her lots today - for your sake, lol, more than hers ;) She'll no doubt have forgotten about it already!

Hon, if it makes you feel any better, I managed to 'beat up' Euan not once, but twice, yesterday - first when he toppled over sideways and smacked his head on the tiles. He was surrounded by cushions in all other directions than the one he fell in and I was reaching around to grab another cushion to put next to him when he fell. Never mind that he'll sit unsupported for twenty minutes at a time. He screamed for about five minutes, so I knew he was OK (it's when they go quiet that you have to worry).

And then I was putting on a wrap so that we could go for a walk and he was on the bed, I was standing in front of it so that he wouldn't wriggle off, I turned my head for a second to check the back of the wrap in the mirror and he crawled backwards off the bed and landed on the floor. I looked down and he was sitting on the floor looking up at me with this look of 'mum, weren't you watching, that was fun'. Luckily he landed on his bum, but it could have been a bit nasty.

Oh, and then DP put him to bed and forgot to put the side of the cot up, so all it all it was a good day for child safety around here.

You are a wonderful mum and Izzy is OK. It's scary when they push the boundaries of safety but it's what kids do. :hug:

It will be ok - i fell on my head, DD did and so did my cousin. We're all fine! (well, okay so maybe we are a bit kooky but its all good!)

It happens all the time. Especially at her age when they are big enough to wriggle uot of your grasp, but small enough that they don't understand that it will hurt til it does.
She'll be fine.

My DD1 gave herself a big googey on her forehead once. She was just 3. We were crossing the road & when we were between the cars on the other side she let go of my had & ran to go up the gutter. Anyway she tripped & her forehead hit the gutter instead. Hard.
I tokk her straight to our gp. He checked her over & gave me a list of things of things to keep an eye on & a big dose of panadol.
20 minutes later she was jumping on my bed!!
She looked like she'd been hit sideways with a cricket bat & had 2 black eyes for 6 weeks after!

You know that I think you are a great Mummy. As others have said.. they are just too quick for us. You weren't to know that this would happen hun. It's noone's fault. I'm glad Izzy is ok. I think you should eat some of that choccie ice cream to make you feel a little better ;)

You did the right thing by calling someone for advice... not sure what you were told, but will stick my two cents in here ;)

I for the next 4 hours watch her and her behaviour, i would wake every 1/2 hr as that is what we would do in hospital.
you need to watch for increase drowsiness, clumsiness (more than usual) and confusion... hard to pick at this age, but you know your baby more than anyone else so you will notice these changes.
For the fact that she cried straight away - be reassured, its a good thing.
She will possibly have a headache, not necessarily a bump or a bruise and may want some more cuddles later.
Try not to worry, this happens more than you probably think :) and it doesnt make you a bad Mummy, this is just the start, soon little ones are going to be climbing trees and furniture and all sorts and they will fall and hit their heads or break bones (we all have done it :) ) and it will usually be when you step out of the room or turn your head.

Oh matey, when something happens like that it is the WORST feeling I know...you poor thing.

She will be fine honey, sounds like she is pretty much back her cute little self already. They are just so tough, and those little heads of theirs are designed to withstand all the rough tumbles that come along with growing up!

SJ - thanks so much hun, that is very similar to what the lady on nurse on call said but they said 2 hours ! As if Im not going to watch her ALL DAY!!!! Heehee! She really does seem to be fine - running around laughing and playing. They told me to wake her after an hour of her nap - I went in after 20 mins and she stirred and then I went in again after 40 mins and she looked at me and went back to sleep! Once she was awake she was her normal self again. Thanks again everyone - it is just so hard to not blame yourself with stuff like this. :(

Tan, I could have posted the exact same post (and probaby did LOL!) when Jack fell down the stairs while I was pg with Tom. I was hysterical and so, so guilty. I think the problem when you are pg is it just slows you down enough that what used to be catching distance, no longer is.

These things happen hun. Every child has accidents. We are the lucky ones - these falls were distressing but there was no harm done. She will have forgotten all about it long before you will. But down the track you will realise that this is just one of things that happens and isn't your fault. Big hugs hun.

Awww dont beat yourself up :comfort: DD has fallen down stairs and knocked herself out, fell off our bed at 3 months old head 1st :(

Tan - you are so far in the opposite direction of a bad mother it is hilarious! You are a GREAT mother!
Don't stress about it (I know, easier said than done!). Sammiejane gave you great advice - exactly what I was going to write.
To make you feel better, DD is always falling and smacking her head. Even head first. She's nose dived off the bed at least half a dozen times (the most recent being this morning :rolleyes:), off the couch, and even off the change table as well! It's life. It's not like you didn't try to stop it or that you threw her off it. You did everything you could to get her to be safe (by sitting rather than standing), you tried to catch the falling missile, you checked her over immediately, you prepared to take her to ED and when noticed she was ok, called a professional advice line (much better than sitting in ED for hours!), you are watching her to make sure she is ok, and you feel bad for her accident. What's wrong with that? NOTHING. She will have a great many more mishaps throughout her life and you can't stop them all. Sometimes they need to have accidents and make mistakes so they can learn from them... even the ones that cause a booboo.

Make yourself a cuppa and watch Izzy running circles and relish in the beautiful, talented, courageous girl you are raising.

Just a suggestion - i change my girls on the floor now in their bedroom. Its so much easier kneeling down and changing them from there, than the changetable. With your growing belly, it maybe easier for you too ??? Just a thought.....

PS - i managed to hit my DD#2 head today whilst putting her in her carseat. Im sure if all us mums take a seat and think back over our day, we've accidently done something that isnt 'mother of the year' material......big hugs.....:hug:

If it makes you feel any better I fell over on the concrete while I was carrying Alex yesterday. He didn't get hurt but considering we were by the side of the road and I don't know what happened (I think I may have blacked out momentarily) I was pretty scared. And I have a bleedy scratched and sore arm and leg to boot!
