How long does losec take to work? and what do you do if they vomit after you have administered it??
I was told 7 days to see an improvement.
When they chuck it there is nothing you can do apart from wait for next time.
What i do is dissolve on a spoon with 5mls of water and then stir with a a syringe and then draw up cloudy liquid in syringe and avoid the slushy mess of coating etc.
did it take you 7 days to notice improvement?
also my chemist showed me a different way... i crush it to a powder, put the powder in the syringe, then add water, its probably the same though.
Are you giving half a tablet once a day? is that the standard dose?
tomorrow is 7 days but noticded imrovement at about 4 days.
he is having half a tab 2 times a day.
DO NOT CRUSH the little white balls need to remain coated till they hit the gut to work properly. Pharmacy i got from said to crush but my dad and dh best mate are pharmacist and said dont (i checked because i remember dissolving for oldies when working as a nurse.)
Thanks feeb, what do you mean by little white balls?? i just crushed half a tablet and i didn't see any white balls! sorry if thats dumb but i am so sleep deprived!
Also he's been sick twice since i gave it to him, do you think that dose was wasted or would it have some effect??
They are sooooo tiny not like big that u can easily see until dissolving.
Just cut in half and place on spoon and then with a syringe drop water staright onto it and it will "rupture" you can see some of the little balls but not that easy as the coatings from outside of full tablet also dissolve.
Look hard to know how much if any he would have had to take effect as Jacob does the same.
The giving it half an hr before a feed DOES not work as who can calm a starving child for that long. I tend to give it to him then change him (have his head elevated on cloth nappy or blanket while changing and screaming and then feed, if do it slow and cahneg clothes etc at same time and then get yourself a drink can kill about 10 mins thats enought for me and i then feed him as i feel soooooooooooo bad. MCHN and my dad and other pharmaist friend said thats as good as u can do.

I really hope this kicks in soon, last night was the worst and i haven't really had any sleep all week. He just needs to be held and rocked and as soon as i put him down he cries.
He still chucks but not as much and doesnt get as hysterical.
Fully breasfeeding still, he is still a snack and snoozer so feeds takes ages and weight gain has been slow probably due to combo of long feeds and chucking.
I hope it works for you soon, have you tryed a swing??

T - I think most people get the 2 x 1/2tablets daily. Maybe you should call your GP and ask if she can 'confirm' that and give that a shot as well.
I had a look at Aidens charts last night, at 6weeks, he was 4.75kg, I am not sure how much A weighs now, but, I would think it would be ok to give him the 2 x 1/2 tablet dose's. I dont think it is weight related dosage, as Aiden stayed on that dosage right up to 6months. And, A's reflux is worse then Aidens, so, i really feel that he needs more.
Perhaps a GP cant authorise that higher dose amount? Not sure.
thats the thing, when i was at the dr, i was SURE he said 2 x half tablet a day, but when i got to the chemist he told me once a day and i questioned him about it, he went to double check the script and came back and said it definately said once a day. Do you reckon i should ring the dr and ask??
I do have a swing but its an upright one and he doesn't have the head strenght for it yet, wish i got a laying down one but they are so pricey.
The carrier Ali leant me though is helping to settle him because i've now figured out how to put him in it so he's upright! so thats a godsend. Once he's deeply asleep i can transfer him to the couch because he likes to sleep in front of the heater, but he still only catnaps for half hour etc.
Last night dh said he could feel all this gurging in his tummy and you can hear the stuff coming back up so his reflux is definately worse than my first ds was.
NOw that he's asleep i was thinking i should make his daily dose of losec, do you think its okay to make it now and leave it sitting in the syringe until he wakes up?
Okay so i rang him and he said that for his age and weight he would only prescribe half tablet daily... he said we can reassess in a week but that he won't prescribe any more he would have to refer me on to a paed for a higher doesage... so maybe thats why you got more debbie because you saw the paed. Bugger, i guess i'll have to wait and see.
I am not sure how stable it is as to whether will loose effectivness from being made up in advance.
We bought a swing last weekend that is birth to 11.3kg was $98 in big w sale. has been good as he is not lying flat.
good that u can settle him in sling i know what u mean re catnaps Jacob does alot of them generally leaning on boob if i move boob away he wakes up.

i saw gp and she prescribed half tab 2 times a day.
they need 2 times a day as half life means meds only work for 12 hrs
Thanks mummab for starting a thread about losec. my son has only just started taking it has of yesterday. can losec made babies have problems doing poos? i am not sure if it is the losec or the needles he had yesterday (2 month old). does a losec tablet really dissolve in water. i was crushing them up and putting it in his milk.

Losec should be taken half an hour prior to a feed so it has time to kick in. I found the best way to do it is to put the 1/2 tablet into the syringe & then suck the water up into it, that way you make sure you get the entire dose in the syringe. And yep definitely don't crush the balls, they need to be intact to work properly. I wouldn't make it up too long prior to giving it to him as the balls will turn brown & I'm not so sure that that's a good thing! Might be ok, but I wouldn't do it personally.
I still can't tell what the balls are? do you mean the pink coating??
Maybe someone from WA can come to my house and show me, i'd be really grateful as i don't know if i'm doing it properly and so far no improvement :(
no the pink coating is what hold whole tablet together.
I dont recall seeing any balls either. I think they are to small for naked eye perhaps.
T, as long as you are getting the tablet into the syringe, dissolving it, and A is getting it down, then you are doing the right thing. If he is still throwing up after he has had it, then, it may take a little more time i guess.

Maybe put half a tab of the losec onto a plastic spoon (or maybe even on a serviette, just so you can see these little beads) and then put a very small drop of water onto it. You will then see the pink skin peel back by itself and then inside of this are a whole heap of little beads/balls that will separate. You don't need to crush it or anything, the tablets will fall apart by themselves when the water hits them.
Let me know if you are still having troubles and maybe I could show you if you're still stuck.

Losec will not stop him from throwing up at all. It merely stops the body from developing stomach acid, so when they do throw up it doesn't hurt as there's no acid there. The vomitting will continue while on Losec, it only helps with the pain.:

I was more thinking that if he is throwing up after having the losec, he is throwing up the losec as well, so, therefore, not getting as much in IYKWIM?

I saw the paediatrican today and despite being told by my gp to up the half table to twice a day, which we did 3 days ago and saw an improvement - she has told me to drop back down to once a day because she said babies up to 8kg should only be on half once a day... my baby is 4.6kg. I didn't find her very helpful, she basically said he does seem refluxy (is that even a word?) and sent of his poop for a lactose intolerance test. She offered a script for the losec suspension mix but since i still have most of a box of tablets i'll finish those first.
I dont get why they would say that as the drugs only work for 12 hrs.
Jacob was 4.3 kg at last weight last week, hopefully lots more this week.
I still ahve lots of tabs left but soo could not see point as he wasnt getting most of it as end of syringe if i left after giving him meds all the little balls would be there and turned black.
Suspension seems to be working well for us.
I have began wondering if Jacob has an intolernce as his farts stink!!! But he doesnt do a poo every day can go days, and they smell also but it has been there for a few days.

I am glad I did because I asked alot of the same question when I was told my little boy had reflux at 4 weeks.
Like most people it started with the vomiting that was so bad that it shot out so fast it missed his bib and ended up on the floor. This happened at nearly every bottle so we were admitted to hospital to check he was losing any weight. We stayed in there for 2 nights but he seemed to be keeping some down as he still was gaining weight but only small amounts.
We were sent home with Losec, Zantac and a prescription formula as they thought he may have been lactose intolerent. Our dose for Losec was half a tablet once a day and the Zantac was only for a couple of days until the Losec kicked in. Once we came home the sceaming started ( this could last up to 4 hours especially around 4pm to 6pm) but the vomiting decreased, this went on for 6 weeks until he was 10 weeks olds. I ended up back at the doctors as my son is a twin and I wasn't coping with it and having to look after a second baby. The doctor increased his dose to half a tablet twice a day at 10 weeks (he was 4.5kgs) after about 4 days on the increased dose I had a different child, he actually smiled. The screaming stopped and the small amount of vomiting I could put up with, we just feed him smaller bottles more often.
At 12 weeks we swapped him back on to normal formula and he is fine. He does vomit a little more on the normal formula but it just flows out of his mouth, not shoting out like it was. My doctor has told me to try to go back to half a tablet once a day 6 weeks after we have him on solids and if he is okay give it a couple of weeks then cut it out too.
I also with the tablets stick half in a sringe and suck up 3mls of water them wait about 1 min until the tablet dissolves then I just give it to him like that. If he does have a vomit you can see small little black balls in it.
If your doctor is only saying to take half a tablet once a day and it isn't working I would try and see why you can't go up to half a tablet twice a day. I can't believe how much that extra half a tablet made a difference to my little boys life and mine too.
Last month he gained 2lb 8ozs not too bad for a reflux baby.
Its 2 weeks tomorrow and still no improvement with the losec. I have started just putting the whole tablet in the syringe and drawing up water - i see what you mean about the balls now. I'm wearing him in a carrier at least 18 hours of the day as he cries otherwise. The paediatrican was pretty useless, charged me $245 to tell me he has reflux and that the losec can take a while to work in infants.
I really just want to see this miracle medication start working as everyone says it does. :(
I'm also waiting for an appointment with a gastroenterologist but long waiting list.
How did you go with the naturopath?

Jacob is much better now teh suspenson has been my god send since i got that have had a huge improvemnt.
He does still vomit but no where near as much or as often and also he doesnt seem to scream as much while feeding or post feed.
Still not sleeping as much but is improving (i think sleeping is a diff issue all together) he is to intrigued by the world to want to sleep!!!
I haven't been through a naturopath yet :( But Barb recommended a lactation consultant who's coming to see me tomorrow - i will ask her if she can recommend someone.

My son has been on losec for 2 weeks I have found that it doesn't work it causes more pain for him. I went back to the drs and I am getting some tests done, but the dr now seems to think that he could be lactose intolerant. So maybe that is something to think about.
definately NO crushing peoples is says on the info sheet with the tablets also not to make up in advance...If you are crushing then you would not see the balls cause they are crushed...yhe syringe idea works the best but if you wanna check out the balls put the tab on a spoon and add a little water
If you live in the melb area, the Royal Childrens Hosp can make the losec up into a liquid. Its called the Wood Pharmacy.

My bub has been on losec suspension since five weeks, she is now going on 14weeks. Maybe give this a try after you have used up the others. Pead told me 7-10days to work. We have had to play around a bit with the dosages to find what suits, Ava is now on 1.5mls morning and 1ml at night.. seems to be working well. Suspension can only be made at specific compounding pharmacies and the suspension lasts 4weeks, costs me $55. The pead told me his patients parents have told him that usually in week 3 of using the supsension it isn't as effective.. it must start to loose it's effectiveness. Not sure whether this is worth a try!!:crossfingers:
