i was never told that this could ever happen
Sue. I was told on 3 occasions that there was a known risk of perforation and what that meant and what would happen if that occured. Once on the phone to book the insertion, once by the nurse at the pre-insertion screen and once by the doctor before she inserted. It's a known, rare but serious complication and they should be telling every woman they fit it to about it. Also how many weeks post partum were you? The practitioners info states they should never fit it to nursing mothers before 6 weeks post partum and that if a woman who's nursing still doesn't have her periods they should consider waiting until 12 weeks. The nursing mother's uterus is softer and still contracting with feeds, and perforation is far more likely.
