Complete Travel Systems
Ok. I know its early days, but I have been known to be a bit indecisive, so I am starting to research now.
I love the idea of the complete travel systems. The carrier that clips onto a pram and onto a car seat base. With the funny hours we keep it would be good to settle bub to bed and then cart him/her around all over the place without as much disturbance. I think it would suit our lifestyle.
BUT...
How long can they fit into the carrier for?
Will I have to switch to an all new carseat after that?
Is it worth the money?
Can I bring bub in from the car in the carrier and leave him/her asleep in the carrier all night? hahaha... that is...assuming I have a baby that sleeps all night!
Love to hear opinions whether you have one of these or not.
-
I have the safe and sound one, dd is only 8 weeks old so can't realy let you know how long she will fit it for but still has heaps of room. I love it, with two older kids it is great for getting in and out of the car for school quick trip to shop, and also for shopping at the mall. As for letting them sleep in it all night not recommended but I have done on one occasions as I had been out she feel asleep, thinking she would wake soon but nupe, went to bed (brought her in my room in capsule) thinking she would wake at aroune 2am like normal but slept till 5am (i loved the sleep that night best since she was born)
The pram I use with it is the profile steelcraft.
Hope this helps.

thanks sweetpea. do you mind me asking, how much it cost?
-
This is personal preference, but also based on experience. I would buy a sling over that system any day. I think a stroller is quite useful, especially if you are planning more than one child, but mine was rarely used for a baby. It was much easier to wear to move around a shopping centre etc while wearing a baby, than pushing a pram. Especially near Christmas LOL! Sure you still have to transfer to/from car and sling, but a young baby will usually sleep through that, and for some time after that they usually go back to sleep easily.
Not to mention that it's so much nicer having baby close, and it is also means they settle more easily. Studies have shown that babies that are worn cry a lot less than those that are not!

We will be getting the Peg Perego Primmo Viaggio car seat system. It is compatible with the Bugaboo stroller and is easily transported from the car to the stroller.
The car seat is about $450 and the bugaboo stroller is $1500. I'm pretty sure the Peg Perego Skate (which is the matching pram for the system) is about $1400.
From memory it can carry a baby up to 9kgs. After that you will need a new car seat.
You can also buy extra bases for the system - so if you have more than one car - you can install a base in both cars.
-
sorry took so long to responde to cost i think all up it was um
$299 car seat
$170 stroller
-
Hi Myson congrats on the pregnancy!
Like Amysarah, I bought the Peg Perego viaggo capsule but with the Peg Perego Skate pram. It is really easy to click onto the pram! If you don't like the skate they are compatible with all Peg Perego prams.
To be honest, the only issue I have with the capsule is that it is a bit heavy (that's without the baby!) so I think I'll be using it with the pram most of the time or otherwise DP will have to carry it :) I bought the capsule and pram when there was a sale on and they came together for $1500 but by themselves I think add an extra $2-300, not too sure! The capsule claims to be approved for babys up to 13kg...but really, it depends how "long" baby is, so you will have to get another car seat eventually.
So I guess it's a bit of a risk spending money on it when you can't judge how much use baby will get out of it. If you like the idea of a capsule you can always hire one. The sling also sounds like a great idea. Being a first time mummy I think I will just go with trial and error and try everything out lol
Oh and it's never too early to start planning! I'm 13 weeks atm and have got the pram and seat sorted! How fun is baby shopping! Good luck xox

Holly what colour did you get? I absolutely love the colour "wave" (its aqua) but they aren't selling it in Australia!!
-
My brother and his wife got one of these for my nephew, and never used it properly because they felt that it meant they never got enough cuddles! (Getting a snuggly warm sleepy baby out of the car onto your shoulder is a treat I miss too, to be honest!)
I had a bog standard car capsule, which we hired each time. They were only in it such a comparatively short time.
For me, the $$ is probably best spent on a really comfy car seat that they can be in post 9kg and a decent/active stroller and a sling/carrier.
JMHO!
-
Amy, I got them in "Moka"- nice neutral and boring! (My DP refuses to push/carry anything bright and showy  ) I suppose it won't get dirty as easily...well show the dirt and muck as easily lol
I love the aqua colour also! I saw it on the advertisement and it looks so pretty. Oh well, I got the pram I wanted so the least I could do was let him choose the colour. Now this baby better like it. One of my sisters who is 3 years old, hated being in a pram from day one, so I'm hoping my little one will like it!! (sometimes I think I'm buying these things for me and not the bub  )
-
What colour bugaboo did you get? I'm positive I am buying the bugaboo for me and not the bub2be!
-
We had a travel system (Baby Love Primo) but hated it & sold it on ebay as soon as we could!! The capsule was heavy, he couldn't sty in it for long & it was just a pain. This time round it is so much easier to get my DD out of the car & put her in her carrier or pram & not bother with lugging a heavy capsule around all the time. Another point for me was that I had an emergency c/s so I wasn't allowed to carry anything heavier than my DS for the first 6 weeks so he was put in & out of the capsule anyway!
-
Oh no Sarah that's my only drawback - the heaviness! I guess only time will tell how useful it is to me.
Amy, I didn't get a Bugaboo - I had been looking at them but DP said no way at the price. We saw them at Baby Bunting and they were $1700 just for the pram. Where did you see them for $1500?? So anyway I got the Peg Perego Skate together with the capsule all for $1500 both in Moka :)
-
Ahhh ok!! Babies Galore had them for $1500. Online they are $1600 though.
I'm getting a denim one (sooo pretty) and they are $1720 online at babies galore.
-
as appealing as the sling idea is, i dont think it will work for me. I have an upper back injury which never healed correctly, so I could not walk around carrying the baby for longer periods of time like for shopping.
the slings all seem to carry quite high and the strain on my back would be too much.
carrying the capsule however has a much lower centre of gravity so would be easier for me i think. plus i can put it down when i need to. or get dh to carry it.
hadnt given the c/s thing a single thought, but perhaps it is best to give consideration to every scenario. who knows what the future brings!!!
wont be using this stuff again after this baby. it is my very last, already have two older kids. who can push a pram while i push a trolley (which is going to be very handy)
-
Hi Myson,
I rarely just carrier the capsule as it is so east to put onto the stroller. I do just carrier into preshool droping of my 5 yr old and in and out of house. Dh carries it for quick trips into shops. I have found it great with other kids around when having to drop of etc.
I also have a back injury mine is in the lumbar spine and some days can not get myself out of bed. So using a sling is not the best for me either. This is one of the reasons I went with the travel system. This is also my last bub hence why I went with this travel system could not jstify spending thousands on prams etc.
You will need another seat after if you do not have one already. I would look at a seat like the maxi rider when bub out grows this one as it is a baby seat and booster in one.
I hope this helps.
-
thanks sweetpea, you have been very helpful.
on the days i am in town i do quite a bit a running around in the day. as babies my girls did not sleep well when out. and if they got a 10 min nap and then i disturbed to put them in or out of the car , pram etc then i could never get them back to sleep for ages. this made them a lot crankier by the end of the day.
-
we got the profile stroller (steelcraft) for $160 and the safe n sound capslue, for $50 2nd hand, but looks brand new, only a yr old from a workmate. my price range..lol and it will be very handy, as i have huge boobs, and my back already aches everyday, sometimes im in agony n cry. so i dont think id be going with the sling, even tho id love to.
-
hey myson
I have the safe n sound unity carrier with the profile stroller and its excellent I think worth evey cent although I brought the capsule second hand and had it safety checked my daughter has just out grown it at nearly 6 months (she was 9 pounds boen and 52 cm long so a smaller baby I would assume longer) and I still have the stroller to use which is a plus.
they only recommend having the child in the capsule for two hours at a time though.
you do have to buy another seat after that I brought a AHR Meridian by safe n sound and was told when I got it installed I should of got a AHR maxi rider but they were not availible at the time I purchsed my seat, then that makes it the last seat you have to purchase.
well hope that helps good luck with everything.
-
I will be getting the fisher price travel system from Target. I thing the umbrella stoller part is $170 and the capsule is $299. The capsule is the Safe and Sound one with different badging. It is rated up to 12 kg. A capsule rated at 12 kg will still suit a 1 year old!
-
I think we're going to get the steelcraft strider 3 deluxe pram and capsule! I was going to buy the strider 3 pram but now its even better! Glad I hadn't ordered one before I found out about the deluxe range yesterday - only problem is finding somewhere that will stock them! Still have 11 weeks to go (due Jan 2nd 2009) so hopefully should have time to have a play and buy one before the baby comes!
-
i guess thats a good reason to hold off a bit on buying. who knows what new stuff will be realeased by march/april next year? and new colours too!!!!
-
I worry that the system i want wont be around anymore if I dont get it. We have decided that we will get it from Babies Galore - The safe and sound unity capsule and the steelcraft profile layback stroller. it works out $10 cheaper than the fisher price one at Target.
-
go layby it now then ali!
we're looking at the strider deluxe and the capsule that goes in it - i'm not overly bothered by the price - i just like it!
-
Happening on Thursday BG ;) But if this is more than 1 bub then I will have to find a twin pram that the capsule(s) can go in!
-
BG...just looked at the strider dlx today....nice. DH loves it. Not sure about the capsule...how long will bub fit? The basinet seems alot bigger? Going back for another look before making the final decision...but the colours are gorgeous!
-
think the capsule is rated up to 9kg - bassinette would probably last longer for bubs in the pram, but then you have the issue of moving bub all the time. for us, cos we live out of town, it's a fair chance gremlin will fall asleep while i'm driving, so don't want to be disturbing their sleep all the time kwim?
-
I was just concerned about the length of time bub would be in the capsule...as we live in the bush our drives are all a min of about an hour...then if you use the capsule in the pram bub could be in it for the whole day...I read somewhere that it is recommended they are only in the capsule for 2 hours? Is that true? Our drive to 'town' is four hours?
-
hehehe you're more isolated than me!
i have read 2 hours is the limit - but i'm guessing at that point bubs would likely be awake and wanting snuggles anyway, then can go back into the capsule...
-
Where did you go to check out the Strider DLX? I've emailled Britax asking but they just quoted the prices to me.
-
True...but when I get to town it's serious shopping time! I am sure all the mum's reading this are laughing at me...thinking I will be able to do a 4 hour drive and a marathon shop with a bub...I live in hope!!!! I was thinking I could use the basinet in the house too...the shop had a frame thingy for it to sit in when inside? Gosh...and this is just the pram...what am I going to be like choosing names lol?
-
I'm in WA and it's just hit the Perth stores this week :)
-
hehehe - have fun picking Ellie
i guess one thing to take into account is how often you'd be doing the big shopping trip. how often you'd use the bassinette etc. if you see it as justifiable, there is no reason why you can't get the travel system PLUS the bassinette... travel system for shorter days, basinette for when it's a big day out... although, pram plus big day of shopping don't go together - get yourself a HAB or sling for those days!
-
Just thought I would say I have the unity capsule and profile travell system and there have been days where I am out all day and love not waking bub, she has spent all day out in it but between feeds and some snuggle time she was out of it a fair bit. With my first two even though they say 2hrs max at a time I travelled alot and def didn't wake bub to take out of capsule eveery 2 hrs, if bub was asleep I kept going as not to disturb bub.
-
I haven't had a chance to actually go and look at prams/strollers yet but i like the sound of the travel systems.
My question is, if you buy the pram and the capsule do you need another attachment for the baby to sit in the pram normally once they are older? Or is the pram able to be used normally without the capsule? Some of the pictures i've seen are a bit confusing
-
with the strider deluxe, the pram comes as a normal pram with different recline postions. you can then swap the normal seat out (i believe) and replace with the capsule or bassinette
we ended up ordering the basinette as well as the capsule - it's not a big expense, and when i'm out visiting, i'm usually out for several hours and want the gremlin to have a constant for sleeping - so figure the basinette is nice and portable, comfy - and can be taken if i get kidnapped byt the mother or SIL for the day, rather than taking the capsule from my car...
-
I am leaning towards the Strider I think. And I love the Kingfisher colour!
Is there a difference between pram and stroller or are they both the same thing?
-
i think it depends on who is advertising - the strider deluxe is one and the same whether advertised as pram or stroller.
-
I'm thinking we'll probably get a bassinet as well, it just seems like so much stuff to buy when i'm not sure how much we'll use it. I suppose we can always sell it 2nd hand if we don't use it
-
if you keep it all in good nick, it should have good resale value. it's hard to know in advance what you will and won't use - for me, i've thought about the lifestyle i live, and how much, to have ANY social life, i have to be out of town, which involves a fair bit of travel and time away from home - so we have to make sure we have all that is needed to make bub comfy when not at home with it's own bed and things. it would be a very rare day that i'd travel anywhere with bub and it wouldn't fall asleep, as everywhere i need to go (shops, family etc) are at least 20-30k's away, plus whatever time i spend at the shops or visiting...
