i had blood thinning injections, after my first cesarean , but not after my 2nd,
i read up that it should always be given after major sugery to prevent blood clots,
just wondering how many of you did, did not have it , or what else your doc did to prevent blood clots, stockings ect ...
Heparin and Clexane (the injections that are most commonly given) can be used after major surgery if the patient is likely to be immobile for a period of time (longer than 12hrs)
We give these to back and brain surgery patients and also some of the other major surgeries...
Although a c/s is major surgery the fact that you are moving about the next day decreases the likelihood of getting a DVT. Just by wriggling your toes and deep breathing and coughing hourly initially and then 4 hrs if you are bed bound will decrease this risk.
But usually as we have had a baby, the last thing that you want to do is lie in bed all day (well thats what i found anyway, i wanted to move and hold and change and feed my beautiful girl (despite the pain)
I didnt have any anticoagulants after having MJ via emerg c/s

wow, I've never heard of that before. I had this machine thingy strapped to both of my calves to stop blood clots the first night, and also was made to wear these ugly stockings for the first few days. At least my legs were warm lol.
I had Clexane injections from memory but nothing else. I was up and about after 12 hours as my c/s was at 9.30pm.
I had the Clexane injections, one a day for 5 days. For the first 24 hours I had those pad things they put on your calves and the machine squeezes and 'massages' them to keep the circulation going. I also had the sexy white knee high socks to wear. I took them off the 2nd day and the midwife told me off so I kept them on. I ended up taking them home cause they were nice and cosy on my feet and legs :)
Had clex 1st time, they must've known they were going to leave me leaking epi in, forgotton for 2nd o/night shift scared to get out of bed until days later.
2nd time nothing, was up by end of day sitting on edge of bed.
Flowtrons are the machine thingys, they pump up and deflate to encourage blood flow in the legs.
As long as you can wiggle your toes or flex calf muscles as epi wears off it's really not nec. to have blood thinners, some hosps have it as policy though.

wow I have had 2 c-sec and never had clexane after them, but i do take it through out my pregnancy 1 a day so maybe they think i have had enough lol. i have always had the stockings on and do wear them ( I have them at home) when we are flying too.

must just be something some doctors choose to do do or not , on the safe site it seems like it should be given ,
im thinking maybe i was given it with my first cesarean, as the doc didnt think i would be up and about straight away ,
where as with my second one which was done very early am, i was moving only cpl hours afterwards, hence me not having to have it prehaps.
i have never worn the stockings though , or had a machine massage my muscles.
thankyou all for replying, it has given me some reason as to why i had it once and not the other,

I have no idea what it was but they gave me shots in the thigh each day that I was there and told me it was for preventing clots. I didn't have stockings or massage - massage might have been nicer! ;)
I'm pretty sure I didn't have either for my first c/s, but for #2, I had the stockings and the clexane injections for 5 days.

I had clexane 2 times a day for 5 days.
Where I work all emergency cs, all larger woman, all smokers, all woman with past history of DVT or pulmonary embolus get clexane.
I had clexane 3 times a day for 3 days
I had Clexane after my emergency CS with DD (but they missed a dose).
It is often dependent on the Dr's school of thinking and what risk factors are present for the patient as to whether or not they give it. Also, there was a BIG international shortage of Clexane recently so Dr's may have altered their pattern of thinking when it comes to giving Clexane. They did where I work... until there was also a Heparin shortage!!!
I'm pretty sure I had them, can't remember what it was or how often (might have been once a day for a few days). They were also pretty strict about keeping those horrible stockings on too.
Yeh I had Clexane injections once a day for 5 days and had to wear the stockings. I have a history of DVT though :redface:

Wow I never heard of this but I think it`s a good idea.
For my c/sec over 3 years ago I just had to wear those leg stockings and told to keep moving my toes around.
Nothing for mine either.
16 hours after my c/s a dr came in and said I needed an injection to stop blood clots, but my midwife was there at the time and said no thats not routine anymore and I didn't have it (drs choice, it wouldn't have bothered me either way). I was up having a shower half an hour later and midwife just said do leg exercises, move toes and promote blood flow, and keep moving around a bit to prevent any clots.
Yep I had the Clexane for 4-5 days post birth. Mine was an emergency c/s.
I really dont remember being given or told about any anti clot injections, I`m pretty sure I did not have anything - I just remember them saying to wiggle my feet lots and get up and moving as soon as possible.
After my emergency c-section I had one shot each day for 3 days.. I still have the bruises from them. I had to wear the stockings too.
The nurses told me to do the exercising and coughing thing too
I got an injection in my thigh every night for 5 days. Don't have a clue what it was but they told me it was to stop clotting. I also got to wear the very sexy stockings.
I too had the injections, but I was given fragmin (I think it was called)-even though I got out of bed and was moving around. At my hospital, you only received the injection if you had a PPH(post partum haemorrhage) and a c section. As I had both, I had the injections. And yeah, they stung and left big marks on my legs! By the end of my hospy stay, there wasn't a part of my thigh that hadn't been injected. I looked like a druggie. :lol:
I had clexane shots after both my caesars.......I also have aspirin to thin the blood during pg so the hospital made me have the shots even after I got up and about till it was time to go home........On the last day I refused the shot as it super hurts and I was very mobile anyway.

i know this is an old post but just wondering, is it safe to breastfeed while you are on the blood thinners? I know a friend who stopped breastfeeding because of the drugs?

I think I had 1 heparin injection post op after my CS but that was it.
Although earlier this year I had a total tyroidectomy and i had twice daily heparin injections for 6 days! Bit of overkill if you ask me especially as I was mobile only 3 hours after my surgery. Apparently it was that hospitals policy. A bit sadistic if you ask me . . . especially when they would say "sorry this is going to sting more because we've runout of the smaller injections". makes me cringe thinking about it!

They put me in stockings and gave me daily injections (not sure if Heparin or Clexane) even though I was up and walking less than 12 hours after my c-section. No Epi, I had a spinal block. I think it was hospital policy after c-section, but I also have a family history of DVT.
