Worried about the link between babies bottles and cancer heart disease etc:

As if it's not bad enough that I am having trouble with breast milk supply and am having to comp feed so my little princess does'nt starve, the latest reports are saying that babies bottles have this chemical which is realsed when the bottle is heated. But only bottles with the number 7 or 3 in the bottom of the bottle near the recylcling logo.

After investigation I have found that nearly all of my bottles are a number 7,:confused:these bottles have feed my other children as well and I have just bought some new bottles (all number 7):wtf:
And the worst thing these are babies bottles, a soft drink bottle is unaffected it is a number 1:( so why is this the case?
Anyone else concerned about this????
Do your bottles have another number and what brand are they??

I use the pigeon ones and they don't have a number on the bottom of them.

I wouldn't stress too much about it. Everyone I know that's had cancer or heart disease was breast fed.

If you are really concerned about it you could get the Happy Baby glass bottles. They are the only ones I know of. They are available at Coles.

I think that the supposed issue with the plastic ones is to do with heat. If you don't heat the bottles then the risk should be reduced. I feed Brock his formula at room temp (used to warm it but found I didn't need to). I use sterilising solution from Safeway so I'm not boiling them or microwaving them both of which could damage the plastic.

The Happy Baby ones are great... the glass is fairly thick and shouldn't break easily... plus they are cheaper than the plastic ones. I only bought glass for my 3rd baby... I wish I'd bought them for my first... would have saved a fortune plus the worry about the plastic chemicals (we heat them).

I don't like the teats that come with the glass ones though... but the NUK ones are compatible if you also have the screw on part.

This whole thing is really quite worrying.

It's easier said than done to avoid tinned food though. I must get back to my resolution to use dried legumes and fresh tomatoes rather than tinned ones. DH and I have already changed to microwaving only in glass. There was an article in Choice mag recently about pthalates in the lids of glass food jars leeching into the food.

Hi girls, I think I will have a look for the happy baby glass bottles. We have to heat the bottle, but use sterilizer solution for the bottles themselves. Apparently it is mainly released when the product is heated so tinned foods should be relatively safe unlesss you heat the can??? They are so good at freaking people out and I guess that there are so many things that are cancer /disease causing and things we have'nt even heard about yet,:doh: but when you do you feel you have a responability to your babies to do something about it.

I use the happy baby glass ones and Nuk glass ones. DD didn't like the happy baby teats, so I interchanged them with the Nuk climline silicon ones.. You can get the Nuk bottles ones in most Target stores (more expensive than happy baby though), but are a pia to steralise unless you have a really tall sterilser...

ooooh NUK glass bottles? I've never seen them but I love NUK as a product. I really really wish i had found glass 13 years ago when i bought my first bottle... oh well... I'll make sure my GRAND CHILDREN only use glass! LOL

Footnote I rang Tommee Tippee today and they have info on their website regarding bpa they consider that their bottles are safe only having very low levels of the chemical. Oh and drinks like popper bottles, fruit juices(just juice etc), all have the chemical in their lining????????????????? and the list goes on.
Who knows what is safe to give the kids.

Most of my bottles are a number 7 and were supplied to me by the Royal Childrens Hospital, makes me wonder!

I heat my milk in boiling water, not the microwave, would it be better to heat milk in a glass container and then pour into the bottle? Will that reduce the affects?

I have some Medela bottles also I may have to use then only and return the others to RCH.

I was given a Avent plug in steam steriliser is that bad? Should I go back to Milton? I don't like the thought of Milton, being a chemical, maybe I should boil them in a pot. But then you wouldn't want to boil #7 bottles... this is all very confusing.

Maybe I should just get rid of them and stick with my medela bottles, however they tend to leak!

Why does it have to be so hard to do good for your child?

Medela bottles are all BPA free and Adiri (you have to get these online) ones are too. There is also MAM ultivent bottles. You can get Medela and Mam at Target.

hi girls, I eneded up buying happy baby glass bottles through K-mart then found them at my local supermarket cheaper $4.90 (stillcheap) verus $3.15 bargain basement price, very happy with them and there teats are good as well $3.15 for 2 a bit fast for her at the moment, but will be great in a month or so.

So is it just #7 plastic we have to avoid?

Is it ok to use a #7 bottle if you dont heat it to steralise it and if you dont heat it in the microwave and if you are only putting liquids that are at drinking temp in them (ie heat/cool in a glass jug or something?)

Put simply, is it ok if the bottle never gets hot?

I am having problems finding medela bottles - checked target and kmart - anyone seen any lately?

You can get medela online from lots of places and also on ebay (last time I looked it was a us seller).

I was going to suggest MAM as well. We use them.

Most bottles are [7] because that is polycarbonate plastic - and it stays very clear and is less likely to became hazy or cloudy when washed/sterilised repeatedly.

I loved the avent bottles but they arent coming out with BPA free bottles till next year.Just have to get glass i spose. It is great to see that more places are stocking the glass ones now. I have found them in the chemist, baby shop, target and big w here but yet last time i was preg i couldnt find them anywhere at all.

I use the Nuk plastic bottles and there's a big fat 7 on them. Has anyone ever used the Nuk wide neck teats on any other bottle? My DD#2 won't take any other bottle so its not a case of just changing to a different bottle.

In Canada, those plastic bottles have just been banned. Anything with BPA is not allowed. Glass bottles have been working well for us since then. I have broken a couple when they were dropped on cement outside, but inside, they are just fine. Also, you can get a silicon "sleeve" to protect the bottle if you are going outside. (Toy's R Us carries them here, but otherwise, just google.) Evenflo makes great glass bottles that are really inexpensive. (I think they were like $2.00 a piece, for a 250mL bottle.)
I'd definitely recommend the glass - why take the chance? The bottles are cheaper anyways. :)
