I always thought 20 weeks was the cut off for on your back - however I still keep rolling onto my back during the night regardless of what I do to try and stop it, so I'm not much help sorry!
My OB told me that usually you will instinctively move yourself with discomfort when it's not good. It's when you ignore that discomfort or if you're taking things to help with sleep that it can get dangerous.
Yup its fine. I was still on my back at around 36 weeks - until I felt a bit dizzy or like I was going to puke...
Your body knows what is good for it - so just move if you feel strange. Sometimes I could lie there for ages before feeling it.. sometimes I felt nothing at all.
Once it even woke me up cos I had rolled over and I thought I was going to puke - so I just rolled over onto my side and I was fine.
I have been wondering about this too coz I was told that if you're on your back in the night you'll instinctively move but sometimes I have a sore back in the day and lay down for a bit on my back and was wondering if I'd know if it was bad or not.
Another thing I didn't know! Can I be really dumb and ask why????

Yeah my midwife said it is ok unless you start feeling sick or dizzy. Some nights i can, some i can't. Luckly most of the time i just sleep on my belly.
wow - I knew there was a reason why you shouldnt lie on your back but most of the time that is where I am most comfy so I am always on my back...maybe I should stop lying on my back all the time...might not be doing baby too good...
My OB told me not to do it at all after 20 weeks and to lie on my left side if possible. I did this and I never once felt dizzy during my pregnancy.
i second was Liz said.. ur body will sort of tell u to get off ur back when it needs to. our bodies are wonderful things really.
I agree - now in my 26th week, I still often sleep on my back with no ill feelings at all, and did so with my first bub. i was also told you will know when it is time IF AT ALL. I continue to do light weights and exercises on the swiss ball on my back and feel absolultely fine. It is when I am lying on a hard surface (like on a yoga mat in class) that it feels BETTER on my side, but I have never felt dizzy or sick.

Another back-sleeper here. Its weird but it was actually more uncomfy on my back at about 20 weeks. Now the baby is positioned differently, i much prefer it.
I try and roll on my side when I can, but I always wake up on my back...it feels so nice to really relax down and release the shoulders.
Don't worry unless there's a reason (such as dizziness). You're the best expert for your body!
Tegan - you're so lucky you can still sleep on your tummy! My belly is too big and it hurts so i can't! In fact i haven't since very early on i guess..... and lately i've really wanted to sleep on my tummy too! lol
I lie on mainly my left side..... but toss and turn all night long :lol: i am generally a back sleeper so it's hard for me not to lie on my back although sometimes i do wake up on my back but i just roll over again. When i wake up and hit the snooze button (a few times!) i lie on my back then as a treat LOL
MissKylie - Me too!! Bubs starts kicking me even if I'm on my side but leaning too much towards my belly. I'm really starting to miss sleeping on my tummy though, especially with the weather getting hotter.
As for lying on my back, my obs told me not too, but I admit I do still it it (quite often) and feel fine. I just can't lie on my side all night, my arms get sore. I've got an obs appointment on Monday so will check with him then whether it is ok so long as I feel fine. One thing I sometimes (but certainly not always) do is pop a pillow under my back on one side, so I'm kind of leaning a little bit. Read somewhere that it can help...
Just a little titbit of info here... I was always comfy on my back. However, when I started to bleed in pre-labour and had a foetal heart rate monitor on in the birthing suite, I was laying on my back and bubs heart rate was down to 100bpm. As soon as I rolled to my left side, his heart rate went back up to about 160bpm...
hmm thats really interesting LoriRae, maybe i should limit my back time after all.
I find that if I sleep on my sides too much my hips get sore!:wall: I think its just the muscles and ligaments around the hips just loosening up but its not as comfy as lying on my back. I usually wedge a pillow behind my back so that if I lie on my back its on more of an angle so to speak.

Yup another back sleeper here lol!I often wake up during the night on my back and bubby kicking the bageezus outa me lol he hates it when im on my back.
Amyalexandra - I find the same thing with the hips. Some mornings I cant walk until i have sat in the shower to losen them up. they go sorta numb like a dead leg and i get shooting pains up through them. I have one of those sausage pillowsand i usually lie with my belly ontop of it and legs wrapped around it to make it more inviting to sleep on my side but it seems to be more comfy on my back some nights sprawled over all the pillows lol

I'm an occasional back sleeper. Luckily for me i've always slept on my sides,in particular on my left side. I'm not finding being on my back too uncomfortable as yet,i've only just reached 14 weeks. I'm sure my body (or baby) will let me know when it becomes uncomfortable.
