After shopping around, I cant believe bridal shops are charging $200-$300 for a veil. They look so simple surely I could make my own. Has anyone made a veil before? Can I get a pattern from somewhere?

I agree hun! My dressmaker was gorgeous and made mine for free with my dress for me - but I would imagine that pattern books at Spotlight or LIncraft would have patterns for them! Good luck with it, Im sure it will be fairly simple and a nice touch that you made it yourself!
Thanks Tanstar, I also think it will be special having made it myself
H, I made my own when I got married and it was so easy! I brought the tulle from the bridal shop where I got my dress from and it was only a few $$ per metre (this was over 8yr ago too mind you - you might find it cheaper at spotlight or lincraft etc). I brought some tiny pearl beads and sewed them all over like one I'd seen in a bridal mag (they were all spaced out and it looked amazing) and then when I'd done that I cut it so that I had one long length and then one about 2/3 the length, put one on top of the other, put a runner stitch through it, pulled it tight to make the gather and then stitched it onto an ordinary hair comb, and Hey Presto it was done. I will post a pic for you to have a look at it if you like.
I too made my own veil, i did get a pattern from spotlight, and the tulle and then i sewed beads all around the edge just like the one i had seen in the shop.
I made my own as well. I didnt bother with a pattern as i already had in my mind how I was going to make it.
I went to Lincraft (or maybe it was spotlight?) and bought some Tulle. It was really wide, so I really didnt need much at all (I think I got half a metre and it cost me like $3). I then bought one of those little hair comb things for about $1 and some pretty beads from a craft shop for a few dollars.
I stitched one end of the tulle and then pulled it so it all gathered. I then stiched the gathered end onto the little comb. Then I sewed on the beads.
hmm Sounds like I used almost the same method as Trillian!
All up the whole veil cost me maybe $8 and took me about 30 mins - one hour to make. I couldnt imagine having spent $200 on it!
WOW thanks girls I'm really inspired to make my own veil now! Trillian I'd love it if you could post a pic?
I bought mine from catchthebouquet for $16 plus $5 or thereabouts postage.
Still not sure if I'm going to use it, but with an RRP of $119 I'm happy. I might just add some shinies to it later on.
I sorta made my own i bought a plain one for 15 dollars in ebay brand new and me and my daughter done all the beading on t our selves and it looked just like the real fancy expensive ones in the bridal shops. we put tear drop crystals on it and small clear beads.
Wow thanks cookiemonster that website has some cheap veils.
my sister got married in sep and our mum made her veil we got the pattern, beads and tulle from spotlight all up it cost just under $60 it was beautiful and looked identical to the ones in the bridal shop that she tried on with her dress.
they are really easy to make.
goodluck with it.
krystal:D
I made mine also but it wasn't your usual style. I had a just a normal hair comb that I had put little flowers on & then had a big long piece of white silk hanging from that. My dress was medievil style so your normal net vail would have been silly looking with the dress.
I also had my shoes made to match the dress also LOL
FJ that sounds lovely. I agree the typical veil wouldnt have suited your medievil dress.
Now I dont know whether to make one or buy one off the website as suggested by cookienmonster, as they are only $15.00. I guess making one would be more special iykwim? Thanks everyone for the tips & ideas.
I suppose it comes down to how time constrained you are and if you think you would make a good job of it kwim? I know it would have been special and all that, but they are really really cheap.
I know you are right Trillian, I am buying one from that site haha.
I made my own veil with help from my mum. We just cut two large semi circles of tulle (a big and a smaller size), then gathered the straight edges and sewed them onto a clear comb. Looked gorgeous I beaded the edges of the veil and the comb....
Thanks for all your help ladies. You've all done a great job making your own veils by the sounds of it. I took cookiemonsters advice and bought a veil for $15.00, our wedding is in March and I dont know how much spare time I'd have to do it.
Kristin - my mum made mine just like that!
Good luck with the wedding MadsMum :)
Big thanks to cookiemonster for mentioning that website. My veil arrived today, its a ripper for $15 plus $7 postage!! Not worth making one at that price..
My mum made my veil as well. I had a square veil, so it was litereally a square piece of tulle, she did a rolled hem around the edge on her overlocker, I sewed a droplet bead onto each of the 4 corners, and then mum attached the comb in the center of the veil and there ya have it! sooo easy!
