Can't keep water down....

My poor Izzy has been throwing up for most of the day. She had her normal weet-bix with banana for breakfast and that came up at around 10. Since then she has had sips of water which have also come up. At around 1:30 she was hungry so I tried a piece of plain bread. It stayed down for a total of 15 mins and came up with the small amount of water she had....

She is back in bed now but I am worried because no matter how small an amount of water she takes in it seems to be coming back up again. She is happy enough - doesn't even cry when she vomits, and plays quietly once she's done but I'm just wondering if there is anything I can do.

DH went to the chemist and they hadn't even heard of that gastrolyte stuff that I've heard of on here so that's a no go although we could try another chemist.
How long do we wait to take her to the Dr??

Tan - does she have a temp or anything or is just vomiting? There is a bug that is going around, so you might just have to wait it out. I'd say if she is looking listless and has no energy and really looks unwell - then take her to the doc.

Otherwise ask at the chemist for the hydrolite icy poles - they should rehydrate her and kids usually love sucking on cold things..

No fever Mel, and that's what DH asked for at the chemist but she said she had nothing to give her unless we went to the Dr.
She lay down on the floor before - unlike her but she didn't sleep today and hasn't eaten so we put her down for a sleep. Will see how she is when she gets up but we might need to take her if she keeps throwing up I think. :( If she could at least take a bit of water on I wouldn't be so worried.

I hope she improves after a nap. Poor little mite.

Do you think she'll like the hydrolite icy poles? Grab some from the chemist and give them a go. If she doesn't like them, then I'd suggest a trip to the dr.
Hopefully it's just a 24 hour bug and she's back to her bubbly self tomorrow.

Just though I would let you know that Gastrolyte is also sold at Safeway. I have seen it also at Chemist warehouse along with the Hydrolite Icypoles.

another thing you can try is a little bit of weak cordial.. I know sugar is a no no in tummy bugs but thats the only thing our boys would have when they had a tummy bug earlier this year.. We syringed it into them like panadol..

Small amounts of liquid is the key as you dont want thme to dehydrate...

Try to see if she will suck on ice or a wet cloth....

Keep up the water even if she does throw up most of it she will be keeping some of it down ( even though it doesnt seem like it)


If worried take her to the doctors, you can always see if she is dehydreated by pinching her skin on her arm or leg and see if it takes a while to return to normal as this will be a sign that she isnt getting enough water...

when my DD had bad gastro I rang the nurse hotline and they told me to give her a table spoon of water every 15 minutes.
If she could handle that without throwing up then go to 10 mins after an hour and then 5 mins.
Main thing is to keep her hydrated.
If it goes on more than 24hrs with her not keeping anything down then to take her to GP or even hospital where they can hydrate her properly.

my 19 month old dd has just had a virus which sounds the same... vomited all over me on saturday night repeatedly, no sleep, couldn't keep water down etc etc... really high fever... she was REALLY unwell, laying around crying and just basically no energy at all.... unfortunately its just one of those things you have to keep your eye on and wait out... the main thing to do is offer sips of water, and make sure she is still having some wet nappies.... she will improve slowly...

four days later and dd is still not eating, besides the odd cracker here or there.... she has had a bottle though today, which i watered down a little with water just to rehydrate her a bit... she is in much better spirits though, which is the main thing.

the thing with a virus is you often just have to deal with it, there isn't much a doctor can do really unless things are really bad... i think if she is relatively happy then that is a pretty good indication things are okay...

Tan, sounds like a tummy bug hun. Oskar had one a few weeks ago and doc said it lasts anywhere from 48 to 72 hours. Gastrolyte and hydrolyte are both great to use if she can keep that down.

I can't believe that the chemist hadn't even heard of gastrolyte though... weird!!! They can give that to you without going to the doc too by the way. There are several different brands around but they're the main two names. If she still can't keep water down it may even warrant a trip to the ER so they can rehydrate her through a drip as that's the main thing to help her get better. Hope she gets better asap!!!

Oh and no dairy while she's still sick either, makes them vomit :(

Thanks for your replies ladies. DH took her to the Dr at around 5pm and basically they said there wasn't anything they could do - she didn't have a fever etc so we just had to watch her.
Overnight she had a bit of a fever - just under 38 and threw up a little again and we gave her more water.... poor thing is just so thirsty and hungry and we feel so bad taking it off her but she would drink the whole water bottle if we let her.
I might go back to our GP today because DH took her to an After hours clinic - they were good but I just don't want to risk it. Poor little poppet. She slept with us most of the night and was pretty miserable.
Her fever seems to have dropped a bit today so that's a relief too. Thanks again and will update when I can.

Hey all,
She's been so lethargic all day and slight fever - the highest it got to was 38.3 and I called Nurse on Call as my MIL was worried because she felt that a tummy bug doesn't normally come with fever too but all is a-ok. She has kept down all her food today and drink and has had full wet nappies so definitely on the improve.
Thanks again for all your advice and support - fingers crossed we have a good night, now just to get my little man sleeping in his hammock instead of us tonight.

Great news she's keeping something down. Hopefully this is the end of the bug. Poor little chicken.

my little one is still vomitting and has runny poos.... it has been four days now...
has anyone else had their babies/toddlers have a tummy bug for this long...?
i just took her to the after hours clinic but as i already knew, there is nothing they can do, just have to wait it out, and bring her back if she still refuses to drink...

i can't get her to drink anything (or eat, but eating isn't important)... she won't have icypoles or cordial, makes me realise having her conditioned to only drink water really hasn't paid off in times like these when i want to entice her to drink!!!!

i wish she would get better she just isn't herself.
