Hi all...just wondering what everyone's experience is of the birth of their 2nd baby after an episiotomy the first time around?? Did you have to have an episiotomy the 2nd time around too? Did it heal quicker/easier?
My DS was born with a big head and wouldn't come out so I had to have an episiotomy and it didn't heal too well...I'm so scared of having another one... :( My OBS said it's not always the case so I'm hoping for some good luck this time. ;)
I did have an episotomy the 2nd time cause Lachlan went into major distress and they needed him out in a hurry. Both of these births were also induced.
But the 3rd time around (no inducement) was totally fine. No episiotomy and just had a tiny graze.
Glad you posted this. I had a big episiotomy with DD and I was wondering about the same thing when we have number 2 (but that wont be for a couple of years at least)
I had a 2nd degree episiotomy with my first and ended up with a 2nd-3rd degree tear with my second. My first birth was induced and very long, I was pushing for 3hrs and DD just wouldn't come out. With the episiotomy she came out in several pushes. But with DS I was 8cm dialated when I got to hosy and I birthed him in two very quick pushes and he came out really fast. He was 4.2kgs too, so pretty big. It healed pretty well, probably the same as my first, about 5wks or so to be completely healed, no more stitches.
I had an episotomy after I started tearing with DS1 as forceps were needed (don't get me started on the cascade of interventions LOL). I asked my ob the same question about number 2 and she said that it could go either way. As it turned out, I did get a small tear, but no episiotomy and the tear was so minor it didn't give me enough pain to even need panadol afterwards.
Are the tears at the epis site??
I am aiming for a waterbirth this time to hopefully avoid another epis and horrible birth.
I had an episiotomy with my second, as she was posterior and they used forcepts.
I have had 3 births since, with no epi's and no tears. :dance:

My tear was not on my scar, I asked the dr when he stiched me up. Don't ask me how I was in the frame of mind to ask but I did, LOL!
I had a very small episiotomy with my first and the tiniest tear with my second, which only needed one stitch - the midwife said it was touch and go as to whether or not it needed to be stitched at all. I didn't think to ask if it was the same "line" that tore or somewhere different.

Lilias - your birth sounds like mine with DS...3 hours+ of pushing and only after the episi did he come out...not fun...apparently the cut was about as far as it could go and needed 'a lot' of stitches. Hoping this one will be much easier... :)
My second birth was a dream!! Labour was a bit of a nightmare- a week or pretty bad prelabour, but as I said I went into hosy for some panadeine forte for what I thought was still prelabour, but I was actually 8cm's dialated and DS was born a few hrs later, after they aftificially broke my waters.
omg i am freaking out too. my 2nd stage went for 3 hours too i also had a epis. ewww.
i really hope thsi one slides out!
I don't know if my tear was on the epi site or not. But my second labour was definitely easier (and faster!).
I had an episiotomy with DD#1 after over an hour of directed pushing - she was born within minutes of having it.
with DD#2 I had a natural urge to push, and didn't need the epis. I have a 2nd degree tear that is healing well without stitches. The tear is next to the epis scar.

Don't be scared girls, I found my second birth so much better than my first. You know what's coming and aren't so scared....well I wasn't!

i had an epi and tearing first time round. the recovery was horrendous, worse than giving birth.
BUT number two was a whole pound bigger and flew out in two pushes with a labour time of 45 mins total and not a cut, tear or graze in sight!
So yep! dont expect that history will definately repeat itself! you never know...
You girls are giving me hope! :) After the shocker that was the first birth I must admit I have been a little worried but perhaps it won't be so bad after all...haha, I can dream anyway... ;)
I had episiotomy with first baby and 4 deg tears.
2nd baby i had in emergency section of hossi - no time to make it upstairs. I had my skirt and shoes on whilst i gave birth. Second one was super fast, and not a graze to report on .....;)

I had an episiotomy with DS. Had the apsolute WORST recovery. Couldnt stand up for longer than 10 minutes for the first 3 months afterwards. Had to have a large skin tag removed. Got better so i could then stand but DTD always hurt.. up until DD was born.
With DD i had only 1st degree tearing. No need for an episiotomy, even though she was roughly the same size as DS. Doctor gave me stitches and honestly, i have never been better! DTD does not hurt one bit. I feel back to my pre babies state. I didnt need pain killers or ice after she was born. I was walking as if nothing happened. With DS i was on pain killers and ice for months.
So yeh, not necessarily will you have to have one the second time round and in my case having a second baby actually fixed everything up down there.

Kell - yes of course I remember you! :) I see you on here in various posts still & always think about saying g'day but it seems a bit daggy. ;) I do remember your episi was bad with your DS...so glad to hear it wasn't the case with your little girl. It gives me hope with this little one! :)

I agree with the other ladies that you shouldn't think your births will be the same. DD#1 was a hellish, long, epiduraled induction - it took 35 very, very long hours for her to make her appearance. DD#2 was soooooooo fast - 4cm to on my chest in 15 minutes.
