DH and I have started discussing birth plans, and I have discovered that he has no intentions whatsoever of cutting the cord! This surprised me as I thought it was something most fathers wanted to do.
So, did your partner want to cut the cord?
I tried to add a Yes/No poll but couldn't figure out how to do it. Mod help?
My sister just had a baby and had to tell DH to cut the cord - he was scared of hurting the baby!
DH was ambivelant but the nurses told him to - he was sorta suprised by the elasticity of it.
When we discussed it, DH didn't want to. At DD1's birth he didn't have a choice, the Dr did it. For DD2 DH did cut it and was quite happy that he did.
Dp had a go at the first birth but was weirded out by the texture and let my sister do it!
Next time he let the doula do it!
No biggie really, I think its more to help the dads feel included. Most of them feel plenty included once they have been abused my their labouring partners :ROFL:
DH said awww no way and I kept telling him he should.
On the day he actually did (well trimmed it as cs birth) and he was sooooooooooooooo excited and not at all groused out!!!!!!!!!

We never discussed it but DP did it and is glad he did. I guess that was his physical part of labour in his eyes.
DH cut Aidens. He said it was a bit tougher then expected.. Quote " it was a grissily son of a b....." (mind you, he said that just now, and not at the birth, cause, that would be slightly untimely :) )

My DH was adamant he wouldn't (he didn't even really want to be there - he is grossed out really easily) but at the time he was so excited he forgot and just did as he was told lol. He's proud he did now.
My DH never wanted to cut the cord for any of ours. I always asked him just to be sure, and he always said no. It just wasn't something he wanted to do and I wasn't fussed either way. It didn't make the experience of becomming parents for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th time any less special/significant for not having done it either.
DS1 - we didn't even discuss it - and silly enough I just assumed he would do it - and more to the point he wanted to. He did, wasn't fussed - but I agree with Trillian, doesn't alter the experience of becoming parents.
He also then cut it for #2 and #3.
It's not a big thing in the overall picture, so if he doesn't want to, don't worry about it. Maybe exchange it with, so you get to sleep in every Sunday until the child leaves home ... :rofl:
Same as Trillian's DH, my DH said he didn't want to but we asked him anyway at the time, and still no.
Didn't bother me at all. DH is fairly squeamish and I was just so proud of how well he coped with all the blood/lochia - I'm glad he didn't faint ;)
ETA: He can always decide at the time. I'd be surprised if the hospital staff didn't offer - it seems to be a common practice.
At DD's birth DF desperatly wanted to cut it------he even asked the midwife if he could cut it so it would be an inny belly button. The midwife of course laughed at him & said that u cant make belly buttons inny's or outies. FYI, DD has the most outiest belly button ever :lol:! U can see it poking out through her clothes hehe.
TBH, i cant even remember if he cut it at DS's birth. I dont think he did, i dunno cant remember.
It's not a major thing if he doesnt want to cut it. Doesnt make the whole experience any less exhilerating(sp)

No - definitely not - when it comes to anything medical related he is absolutely hopeless, but I offered with DD1 and have offered with this one and still a big NOOOOOOO!!! He is surprisingly good in labour with me so I can't complain and do understand as I am a bit squeamish about these things myself :)

Yep, my DH really wants to cut the cord. It doesnt' bother him. Although he is a registered nurse so things like that don't bother him anyway whereas some guys it does perhaps....

I voted for my sister, my BIL was really weirded out by the cord and didn't want to do it. So I did! Yay.
For me, I am pretty sure that DH will want to cut it - he has birthed calves on his grandparent's farms so I don't think he's too squeamish!
Nope. My DH has a thing about touching/cutting the cord. It grosses him out. With DD we didnt get a choice cause the doctor did it straight away. With DS i cut it and with this one DD will get to cut it.
I don't know how to answer your poll question. When I was pg and asked him, he said he definitely didn't want to cut the cord. But then when DS1 was born, he was offered the scissors and he took them and did it. He also cut DS2's cord too.
wow. I'm finding this very interesting! I was under the impression that most Dads would want to be involved in this .... but my DH didnt. First time he said "eeww no way" second birth he missed cos it was way to quick. This time I am going to do it myself I think!
My DH is a bit squeamish with anything medical or icky, and he's needle-phobic, I told him he is being a sook and its all in his head, cos he doesnt even bat an eyelid when it comes time to butcher our own meat on the farm.

I guess the question is - did your DH intend to cut the cord when you discussed this while pg? I understand that many men simply don't know how they will react until they get there, and may actually change their mind. But it is interesting to read about the different intentions that the fathers have had.
BHL has cut both DS and DD1 cord so I guess it didnt bother him too much, I never really asked him just thought he would do it, but BHL has had to do alot of gross stuff in his line of work so a little cord cutting was a piece of cake so to speak....
with DD2 BHL wasnt there so mum cut the cord, she told me it was so werid been on the otherside of birth, but just if not more amazing....
Mine DH is like this too. He grew up on a farm and has seen many cows/sheep give birth. Yet he hates looking at a baby being born and doesn't like touching it until it's cleaned off and wrapped up :rolleyes::
He didn't want to when we discussed before hand, but when it actually came time to do it he changed his mind.

MY DP cut both ours. I think he secretly loved it too.
He's done something for the boys that i haven't, you know.
My DH said he didn't want to when we discussed it and didn't change his mind at the birth. He doesn't regret not doing it he just says it's not his thing
Dh wanted to cut ds's cord but didn't have a chance to do it, the Dr did it, as they wanted him out and attended to quickly.
I asked my partner this question a couple of months ago. When our DD was born he was never given the option due to complications at the time of her birth. He'd never actually thought of it when I mentioned it, in fact, he didnt' even know that under normal circumstances he would have been given the option.
DH says he's not fussed about it. I thought most guys would want to aswell but DH said he doesn't see what the big deal is and doesn't care if he does it or not. I think he think's it's a little gross too, lol. I don't really mind if he does or he doesn't.
My DH didn't want to cut it either, so my Mum did it. She said it was quite hard to cut and the scissors they gave her were blunt. It's only going to be DH and I in there this time, so if he doesn't do it, I guess a midwife will. Funny... I just assumed it was something that all fathers would want to do. I do understand though, it is a little gross. I just thought men were tougher than that! :lol:
He was going to do it but when the time came he just stood there with a dumb look on his face and told my mum to do it!
Well my DH said before the birth of our first son Cody that he was not too sure if he was going to be able to cut the cord, and with that comment i had decided that if he was not going to do it I wanted to do it. But as soon as the nurse asked him he took those scissors and cut it. So all three of our kids he has cut the cord.
But if he did not cut it then i would have!!

At the beginning Shel didn't want to at all, it grossed her out. By the end of my pregnancy she was all for it, and even though I had a c/s and she didn't get to cut it, she got to trim the cord and she was stoked. The assistant took some amazing photos and she's so proud of herself LOL.
ETA: She said it felt like cutting licorice.

He was worried enough about being in the same room, scared he would pass out at the sight of blood.
DH wasn't too fussed. He was always 'If i have to' But when the MW handed him the scissors when DD1 was born he was happy to do it. I think I will ask him if he wants to this time, and if he is not fussed then I will put it in my birth plan that I want to. I will wait till the cord has stopped pulsating, like we did with Em. I did suggest a lotus birth to DH but he was a bit grossed out!!
Simon cut it both times aswell as watched the birth!
He wants to film it if its a girl this time!
with our 1st hubby wasnt keen.. just not interested..
with our 2nd he didnt mind the idea.. at least it was him contributing to something other than supporting me.. and he felt more confident this time around.
My Dh cut the cord on all our five bubs & he was so over the moon about it!:lol:
No... :( My kids father REFUSED flat out when the midwife had the scissors and clamp ready for him to cut. He walked away. He's so squeamish (and selfish.. grrr) that as our DD flew out, he ran out the room gagging and vomiting :) All class huh?? hehe. My mum ended up cutting the cord.
For DS he wasn't there (we had split) and my mum cut the cord.
This time hubby is excited to be a part of it all :) :) :)
