OK, am I a freak or has this happened to you???

OK, this is going to sound weird, but...when I look at our pram I feel physically sick :redface:. I bought a gorgeous, red P&T pram (second hand of course ;)) when I first found out I was pg and we took it away with us when we had a two week holiday just after Christmas. On that holiday I started to feel crappy as you do in early pregnacy, a bit off in the tummy and very tired. We used the pram heaps on that holiday (loved it btw), but now that we are home, whenever I look at it I feel physically sick because I think it reminds me of how I felt on our holiday! If I even look at a photo of a red pram I feel sick.

Oh my goodness am I a freak or what? Has anyone ever had anything like this happen to them? I know when I've had gastro, I've felt sick for ages afterwards whenever I looked at something that I used while I was sick. So tell me, am I weird? :redface:

You are not weird hun. I am the same when I have been sick or when one of the kids has been sick. It took a few days of Sarah constantly using he carseat after it got washed for me to stop picturing her spewing on it.

No you're not a freak! I had similar experiences during my pregnancys.

I don't think you are weired. I felt the same with the baby's change table. The smell of it (must've been the laquor or varnish used) made me throw up. Now that I have set it up it still makes me queasy - same as you, the thought of what it used to make me feel like, although it is getting better. It will for you soon, too!

i hear you hon- i couldnt open the fridge- even looking at it made me queasy for 5 months as i opened it one day and the smell made me vomit. The thought of opening the fridge made me heave!!! Even walking past it!!

Now i am fine and can open the fridge - lol - it will pass

Oh, thanks so much everyone! You've made me feel less of a freak now! It's weird how the human brain works, especially the pregnant brain LOL!

I hope it wears off soon because I dread everytime I have to use the pram!

When I was having #5, I had horrible morning sickness and in the evenings would crash on the couch. Well, we got the PS2 at that time and dh's favourite game on it was Ratchet and Clank. To this day, when I hear the noise of the bolts being picked up on Ratchet and Clank, I gag. That was five and a half years ago!!

I don't think you're strange - it takes a while to get over the things we associate with feeling sick. I still feel queasy when I even just think about snow peas or silverbeet, as I seriously went off them during my first trimester.

See, I can understand the sickness association with food, but it's the association with a non-food item that weirds me out!

Psychology geek says "ooooohhh that's SO fascinating" - oh so sensitive about your suffering aren't I?

You've got what's called a 'conditioned aversion' - when 2 things have become negatively associated through repeated pairings.

It's pretty adaptive as it means that we learn to avoid things that have made us scared / sick / hurt. So, if you're bitten by a dog, your body will try to get you to run away next time you're near a dog - racing heart, adrenalin, flight response etc. Unfortunately it's not rational, just neurological connections, so obviously your body has decided that red pram and nausea are connected even though one did not cause the other. Funny creatures aren't we?!

Believe it or not, you can treat it. You just need to get yourself into a state where you feel relaxed and happy, and think about the pram. When you start to feel queezy, take long slow deep breaths and use your mind to try and settle your stomach. If you can master this thinking about the pram, do the same looking at a pic of it, or the pram itself. Alternatively, just look at or think about the pram regularly at times when you feel hungry and happy. You should be able to fairly quickly re-condition your mind that the pram is a perfectly safe thing! That is, if you can be bothered with all that to fix pram-aversion!!

I will definitely try the relaxation technique you have described, I want to use that pram without feeling sick!

Trish I don't think your weird (well not about the pram anyway! LOL just kidding!). I had a similar thing in my first pg with DH's playstation. I think the constant movement on the screen made me feel nauseous and from then on the sight of the playstation made me feel ill. I'm over it now though!

Good luck with the relaxation technique, I hope it works for you. After all, a red P&T looks awesome and it's a shame to be feeling so badly about it.

At least it's only a pram I suppose hun. I couldn't look at another pregnant belly without feeling sick :redface:. I felt terrible the entire time my sis was staying with me through her preg, because I couldn't cope with remembering how uncomfortable I was......

It was from when i was 10-11 but i still can't look at sweetened condensed milk. If i look at some, smell some, anything. I want to puke.

We have our new pram parked by the front door because there's nowhere else to put it. It's like this reminder every time I walk in the door about what's happening. This baby was unexpected so I freak out a little when I see it... I am bonded to this baby now but I am still not entirely sold on the concept, if you know what I mean!

The same thing happened to me with DS excersaucer. I bought one just as I was starting to get some really bad anxiety attacks and when I had an attack I would pop DS in it until the anxiety attack was over. Thankfully I got better after a few weeks but after that every time I looked at the excersaucer I started to feel really anxious and nauseous. I moved it downstairs to our computer room so I didn't have top look at it all the time. I can look at it just fine now but DS is much too big for it now.

It's like I know there is a baby in there, I can feel it fluttering around, but I have not connected to it like it is an actual real child yet...

Scary stuff...freaks me out!

Just as I found out I was pg with DS, I got a new Nokia phone. All was well for a couple of weeks, then MS set in...for a long time...now every time I hear that same ring tone, I feel queasy! 3.5 years on! My phone was run over about a year and a half ago, and as much as it was painful for all that involved...a part of me was relieved to move on from Nokia phones...I never admitted that to anyone until now!!

LOL that's hilarious Mayaness! You haven't given me any hope either :rolleyes:. I still feel sick when I catch a glimpse of the pram, I'm OK once I start using it though. My mum took my boys out to the park and as soon as I saw her walking up the driveway and I saw the pram I felt sick! Also, if I see anything the same colour red (DH has a work t-shirt in the same colour) I feel sick, I feel like such a freak!

Well, you could organise to have it run over!

I can't Willow! This one is the only one that will fit nicely in the car I'm getting in a few months time. I only just sold my trusty Valco Runabout last week :(

I got this P&T's for such a bargain, I know I'll never find such a good bargain again ;)

To this day i still cant stand the smell of a particular yellow toilet cleaner ( the type that hangs off the side of the toilet bowl )

When i was pregnant with DS#1 we visited my BIL and SIL and thats what they had in their toilet and i felt instantly ill. Since then i have come across the same cleaner and i still cant stand the smell of it ! YUK !
