Oooh, I have no idea! Interesting question though, unfortunately I would think something like that might stay on forever, KWIM?
Oh great! I was kinda thinking the same thing too though. Surely the fact that it was 7 years ago would have to be a good thing?
I plan on finding a rental this year and im really worried about it!
it basically stays there until you pay the debt ....
if you've already paid it they may ring the previous agent for a chat HTH
I heard (so its not 'official') that if you were put on a black list it'll only be one for 5 years. :dunno: Seeing as though its 6+ years ago, I doubt it would be a stain on you forever. And most people understand young and dumb ;) renters LOL (no offence! Just saying, most understand young people + rental houses don't always mix the best!).
It was paid back in 2002 too...so hopefully it would be ok! I wonder actually if you can call. I know that there's some sort of rental board (obviously!). I wonder if they would be able to tell me?
Yeah you should try the tenants association (Its called RTA in Qld). They'll be able to tell you want warrents getting put on a blacklist, and how to get off it. They MAY even know if you are on or not.
If you've been renting since, and had a good record, it should wipe out something you did 7 years ago - you can prove you've learnt from your errors and are much more responsible. But def call the union and find out what they have to say...

If you paid back the outstanding rent, that will really help if it is still on your record. Just explain the circumstances, say that you made sure to pay them back, and since then have had no problems.
Good luck,

Hmmm... Does living at a ski resort for 12 months or a cruise ship for 7 months count as renting??!
I've been living at home, so no recent rental record. I'll try the board and find out. Thanks ladies for your help!
If you have been paying board, or can show that you pay other bills consistently that can help 'prove' your reliability now you are grown up and responsible.
k
Yeah, if you have a phone bill or something to prove that you are stable and reliable in paying then all should be fine.
I can tell you are stressing about this... please don't. If anything, I would approach a real estate in person and say "look, I am looking for a rental property but I'm really scared that what I did when I was young is going to effect my chances" and let them help you. Most of them will be really understanding, I promise. If they're not... well you probably don't want to rent with them anyway!
Thought i'd update....Im looking at 5 possible houses to rent tomorrow. Now i guess is when i'll find out if my previous history affects me or not! Wish me luck!! :)
Good Luck!! :)
Thanks hun! :)
Be upfront with them, tell them about it when they take you to see the houses. I had one rental mis-hap when I was young and stupid, it was all paid off years ago and it was still on record last time I rented which was 8 years after it happen. I find agents more understanding if you tell them first then them finding out off their computer and having to ask you about it. Best of luck tomorrow.
Thanks Mum2. You're right. It's better to be upfront and honest. They're going to find out anyway so it's better that i tell them first! :)
TICA are only meant to keep this stuff for 5 years... but if you have seen the cost of finding out you'd want to scream too! I am at the point where I won't sign a TICA form because I do not agree with my details being shared with a company that wants to charge me $5.45 a minute to talk about what is on my file, technically leaving me at the mercy of unscrupulous real estate agents.
Im not sure what TICA is?
I don't know what the TICA is, sorry. But, something handy for you to have is the Residential Tenancies Act, which you can find online. Google it or go to a site called austlii dot edu dot au. Be warned, if you pick too many issues with your new pad from the act, the real estate will probably tell you that you can't have the place (because you will create 'headaches' for them and cost the landlord money), ie, I asked about window locks and something else at a place we were going to get, and the real estate turned around and said no to us. I would advise to read it though, as the booklet that the real estate is supposed to give you is pretty lacking I think. If you read it, at least you know what should be there and what doesn't matter too much, and things like "essential" repairs, etc.
Good luck.
All the best today as you look at places.
The next hard part is waiting for the answer as some don't let you know if you haven't got it, just leave you hanging.
TICA is like the real estates version of Baycorp. Think Consumer Credit File only with rental properties. If there is a default and the real estate you were with was a TICA member, then it is possble you have been listed on there. Finding out can be seriously expensive, or very embarrassing (being told by the real estate agent).
