Hi,

ive cot one for Mia's cot. Its under the sheet so i dont know why its not reccomended. Im so glad i got one coz the amount of times she spewed in there i wouldnt want to replace my $200 matress everytime.
Ive not used a mattress protector in my cot. My mattress itself has a plastic top so have no need for one. I do however use one in my DS's cradle.
Like Hollye said, i dont know why you would need to wait til 6 months seeing though its under the sheets.
I'm a bit wary of using anything synthetic because of the fumes. I've always used a 100% wool "proof mat" which you can get at David Jones (made by Onkaparinga). I still have the ones I used with DD1 so a good investment IMO.
the reason I was given was that the newborn could suffocate - the mattress protector doesn't allow enough air circulation and if the newborn went face down then it couldn't breath.
Thanks for your responses - don't really fancy having to replace the mattress!
I use cotton protectors with a plastic backing for both my kids right form the start and both are still alive. I have never heard of it being a safety issue. As long as you sleep baby on their back and give them lots of tummy time during the day to strength their neck they should be OK. I was far more concerned about getting a good change table that my baby couldnt roll off. The only injuries I have heard about from friends are there babies falling off change tables.
i use wool as well, they are onkaparinga also, maybe look at some dr flannel tarkine which you can buy or a 100% wool blanket, i even lanolise mine as i have two small ones to cover the length of the cot, i use it in the bassinette first though. the thought of sleeping on PVC is yuk!
if bubs can suffocate because of matress protectors...
1) they should be removed from all shelves and NOT be sold
2) if a bub (nb) can roll..well they must be VERY advanced....
3) if your nb bub is a tummy sleeper you should have a monitor
i have always used a matress protector in our bassinette and in our cot... no probs at all
yeah I thought as much :D.. I'm going to add one to the shopping list.
Thanks girls.
I have a wool one too, from Nature Baby NZ. Worth the extra money in my opinion, healthier and breathable. We have had plenty of times when there have been accidents and never once has anything got through the wool!
Tarkaine
I got a two pack from target - they are quilted mattress protectors that are cotton- The twin pack was about $35 ON SALE- get two if you can so that one in the wash and one on the bed at all times- makes a huge difference to the state of your mattress! Best and less also have a cotton one available as well - they were cheaper again!
Plus the covers are soo much better than the plastic side of the matress as well as they are softer and more comfy!
Definately get one
odette
Just putting it out there Holly, Si started rolling back to tummy at 2 weeks. So while I would be surprised if mattress protectors were a danger, it's best not to make sweeping statements - every baby is different.
i'm with Odette - as much as i haven't used them yet, my intention is to get the quilted cotton ones from Target - they have the under sheet ones, but also one that goes over your sheet to protect the sheets as well... i've got them on my "must get" list...
Girls seriously there is no need to be so nasty! I think the heat must be getting to everyone... but to quote Tom Cruise... can you put your manners back in... please! And I don't mean that badly at all... just to clarify :p
i have to agree with you Hollye...if your bub does start to roll early on..yeah for sure get a monitor BUT if you wrap your bub to sleep very very unlikely they are going to roll...NOT once has Jack been able to roll when he is wrapped.
no nastiness here ;) i do agree tho.. i think the heat is getting to everyone. How long does these heat last for again? like march.. april??????? argh!
at the end of the day, Mattress protectors are safe.
holly remember not everyone can afford to get the monitors with the sensor pads!
I was also told by a paed and a MCHN that plastic mattress protectors can pose a suffocation hazard, as does anything that doesn't allow air to pass through.
Whether I believe them or not is not the point, I certainly can make up my own mind about it, as will Tarkine. I don't think it's particularly tactful to say that someone's opinion on the matter is 'crappo' btw, simply because you don't agree with it. What you choose to buy for your baby is your business, but obviously there are those who believe a plastic mattress protector shouldn't be used with newborns.
I bought an Angelcare breathing monitor too, but never ended up using it.
Well we had a hammock, but we used a mattress protector as well.
With Matilda... when she was still in hospital and on the bed, while the midwife was in the room, she rolled onto her tummy. When she was a few weeks old we realised out of desperation that the only way she would sleep longer than 40 minutes was to sleep on her belly. At that time, we didn't know about a breathing monitor... had no idea that we should know about it. I was paranoid and we wound up going to sleep school because I wanted her to learn to sleep on her back. While we were there, she started rolling and they told me it was useless to try any other way. As long as we kept the other SIDS risk factors away, she would be fine. I never heard anything about a mattress protector.... :dunno:
i didnt say anyones opinion was crappo, read it again, i clearly said the advice she was given was crappo. im very very sorry if u missunderstood.
AJP - thats right. I cant afford one either. So i guess there is other ways u can prevent bub from tummy sleeping with them things that hold them etc...
also i didnt think we were talking about the plastic protectors. Im not sure what these are. Mines not plastic, frankly i dont know what its made out of.. cotton i think.
when I first read through this I thought that maybe the person in the shop was talking about woollen underlay type things, which add a layer of fluffiness to the mattress that could pose a risk. Maybe the heats getting to me...
We have a boori cot, which has it's own special sizing, and I've really like the Living Textile mattress protectors, because they fit so snugly over the mattress, they're really like an extra sheet IMO. I assume that they do different sizes to fit different makes. They also do a great job of protecting, ours have been well tested with a couple of seriously gross gastro events, and done the job well.
The lady who told me about the mattress protector was the sales lady in one of the baby shops. I think she was talking about the waterproof mattress protectors.. maybe, I can't really remember (attack of the baby brain!). And I'm always suspicious of what sales people tell me and always do my own research.
I have stuck a number of terry cloth nappies under the sheets where bubs will be sleeping and will see how we go and if we have any leakages. Will go and look at the quilted mattress protectors in target, although my local target is a bit ordinary.
Thanks for the advice.
