Chubba-bubba mummas... how big was your bub at 6 months?

We got Jazzy's 6 months needsles yesterday, dr weighed her and she is a big one! 10.1kg! She is 74cm and her head is 44cm. So she's off the chart in length and weight. Ok, I think, so shes big and long, not even worried until the dr tells me to put her on a diet. Cut out all solids and reduce breastfeeds.

Put a baby on a diet?????

I tried to argue with him that shes such a chubba because she's only just started rolling (she rolled a few weeks ago but its only been i nthe last week that she's doing it multiple times every day) so she'll start losing all her baby fat soon enough. No no no no he said, she's too big.

Of course, the nurse doing the immunisation just told me to just keep going with everything we're doing as she is just perfect (which, of course, got a massive smile from my little show off ;)).

But just wondering. Is 10.1kg REALLY REALLY heavy, as in should I try to (*cringe*) put her on a diet?!?!?!?!?!?

Leash - you know she is fine. Don't listen to him.. There are others in our baby buddies groups who have babies the same size. Some babies just chunk up well.

I'm jealous - I think I should come over and see if the chunk can transfer to Miss M... but at least she is finally over 7kg.. LOL

you obviously have full cream milk there leash!!!! i most certainly wouldnt even contemplate a diet!!

Argh but Mel I can't help it but worry, I'm a worrier by nature! LOL at the chunk transferrance. Didn't they say fat was caused by a virus? Come on over and we'll infect you (well, not you, Miss M lol).

Oh, want a laugh? Her smaller nappies (that go to 12kg apparently!) don't fit around her legs anymore. MAN I should sooooo take a photo they are friggen massive rolley poley sumo legs!

AJP, I wouldn't know how to put her on a diet if I tried. Unless I cut out a solid meal, but not sure how well that would go down with her, she loves her food...

PMSL.. you'll definitely have to take a pic of her legs then - just so I can get jealous. Although, its the biggest part of Miss M too.. lol

And if fat transferring was possible - then people should be scared of me, I've got enough on my own butt to infect everyone.. lol

:hug: I can't believe a dr would say to put a baby on a diet (although I am not really surprised) it's just ridiculous (sp) what we are told by health professionals. You are being told to cut back on solids and bf and I know of others being told to give full cows milk on cereal etc... to help bub put weight on :rolleyes:

Anyway my little man was 10.08 kg at 6 months and he is fully bf and we started solids about 5.5 months, I know of another baby who is 10 kgs at 5 months. So she sounds fine to me.

PMSL at the nappy situation, thanks to DS rolls I have always had to have him in nappies that are bigger, for instance he is now 12 kg and has been in junior nappies (18kg+) since about 10kgs. I worry what I am going to do when he doesn't fit into them. I have noticed now he is starting to crawl and getting taller that he is starting to slim down.

Leash - Beth is pretty chunky 7.89kg ad not quite 70cm but her legs are so chunky that complete strangers see fit to make comments like "that's a serious set of pegs' and 'your little one has prize-winning legs'!
you know Jazz is fine and trying to feed her less is just going to make you both miserable. Like Mel says there are other babies in our buddies group just as big! You should be proud that she's obviously thriving.

Now that she has started moving about she will start using up all those lovely rolls of energy she has stored and I am sure she will settle into her own in no time.

You know from our baby buddies thread how paranoid I have been about his weight gains but I am just carrying on what with I have been doing and I'm trying hard to not take the "wow he's a big boy" to heart anymore. He's been on solids since New Years Eve and is loving whatever I give him so I'm just sticking with it.

Kye is off the chart for her height and weight too but I just joke when I see the nurse and say "yeah Kye is creating his own percentile" :rofl:

I cant believe the doctor told you to cut out her solids and cut her BF's back thats just ridiculous!! I would just keep going with what you are doing, she is a happy healthy bub and you are doing a great job as her mummy, you know what's best for her, when she is more active she will slim down.

DS was about 10kg at 6 months too (and he was rolling a lot from 4 months). His weight gain did slow down about the 6 month mark though - he was 12kg at 10 months and 12.1kg at 12 months. Don't worry about the 'diet' remarks - how ignorant! My MCHN said that they don't worry about weight until 2yrs+ in breastfed babies. They weight gain really does slow down - DS has thinned out heaps since he started cruising/walking.

DS has been wearing 1s since 6-9 months - but he is still wearing them now. (and he is in the 13-18kg nappies when I use disposibles - a bigger concern is that he doesn't fit into the BBH bamboos anymore :lol:)

Was it a GP or a paediatrician?
You are doing a great job hun I wouldnt worry about it at all.

Rayray, just my local GP. He's usually really good, always been happy with her weight...

Juliette was 9kg at six months, but only around 67cm, now at eight months she's 10.4kg and 69cm! She's shorter than Jazz so it makes her look HUUUGE!! At her six months needles I was told I should go slow on the solids because it would make her overweight blah-di-blah. Then at her seven month weigh in I was told that she should almost be on three meals a day & I had three weeks to get her on it.

You know what I did..... Came on BB like you did, having a huge freak out over what to do, then I decided to do it my way. I knew that J would trim down once she starts crawling & it's not like I'm feeding her McDonalds & ice creams every day (or at all LOL!).

Zander was a chubby boy but now he's a stick man, there's hardly anything to him, so I'm not worried.

You know the only thing that bothers me is when people comment about how big she is & they usually say "oh she likes her bottles doesn't she?" NOOOOOO, it's all me!!! Well mostly, now she's on solids too ;)

I can't believe the Dr said that too you!! Jazzy sounds like a perfectly happy healthy girl to me, she is only just rolling, my DS got quite chubby (completely gorgeous!!) and once he was mobile (he has just turned 1) he lost it all quite quickly.

Now that the Dr has told you this, the seed has been planted, Maybe take Jazzy to another Dr just so that your reassured and your not 2nd guessing yourself.

i think you will find though that Dr is just a je*k!!

I too would just listen to the Dr then do what you feel is right..

While 10 kg at 6 months is above the average it does not mean Miss J is over weight and any Dr who even suggests that (imo) is just ridiculous.. Of course she is a big girl.. She eats and sleeps.. Once she starts rolling and crawling the weight gain will slow down..

I hate how Drs can say something and shatter our confidence.. Grr.. I have seen pics of your Little Princess and she looks so happy and healthy.. :)

people and drs are so 'funny' with the comments they make! I dont think 10kgs is too big for a 6 month old, ive certainly heard of others that size!! Some babies are just bigger...love the thought of her rolley polly legs!! So munchable! lol. like you said as soon as she starts moving around she will even out! :)
Grace is still little, been stuck at 7.03kg since the 23rd Jan, but moved to another docs after i was told she was underweight a few months ago, the nurse i saw for her jabs yesterday said not to worry about weight to much, aslong and she is happy and healthy looking it really didnt matter too much about the numbers!! Jazz looks and sounds perfect, IMO i would totaly ignore that doctor!!
Imagine if you tried to cut her feeds....she would kick up a stick!! What a silly concept!

hun DO NOT listen to that Dr!!!!! how stupid of him to mention diets at 6months of age....although i have heard it from afew other mums with older bubs..(older than Jack)
gawd...Jack was weighed last week (4months immunisations) and he was 7.4kgs...i am sure he will be around 10+kgs at 6months...and i am NOT at all worried...

By the time they all get to preschool/kindy, you wont be able to tell who were the small ones and who were the big ones.

My boys get real chubby. DS1 is tall and a skinny mini now.
We haven't had DS2 weighed recently but he's up with his weight to. The last time we got him weighed the CHN was rude and was like "what are you feeding him?" As if we'd been stuffing all this food down his throat, but he was only having milk. He was like 5 1/2 months at 9.170kgs. He'll probably be at what your DD is at now if not more.

I'm a worrier too, so I stress over it aswell but the nice CHNs reassure me, aswell as my DP.

ooooh that's so crazy!! I can't believe your GP said that! We're not 6 months yet, but my DS was 7.6kg at 4 mo - see my sig pic - he's just a moonface on shoulders, no neck at all!). And last time we saw our paed he didn't even bother weighing him.... just looked at me and chuckled as he said "yeah, didn't bother weighing him, he's fine".

My sis-in-law (who is now 6' as an adult) was off the charts as a baby - when they flew (internationally) with her at 11 months they were given a bassinet which she didn't even fit in. She spent most of the flight sleeping on the floor cos she was just too big!! Plus, you hear about kids who are "under" on the charts, therefore it goes to show there will be kids "over" on the charts to. Charts schmarts really. I reckon YOU know if she's happy healthy & hungry - let's face it, if she doesn't want to eat she'll let you know.

Hamish was 9.5kg at the same age, he is now so skinny it worries me, lol he has gone from being a chubba bub to a little stick.
Lachlan weighed spot on 9kg at six months, im not worried either. I get the oh he is a big boy comments all the time.
They are babies they are all different.
