Allergic reaction... to soy yoghurt???

Ok this is strange... DD is on soy formula - been on it since.. uh... like November or something.. ages anyway..

And today - I gave her some soy yoghurt that we had in the fridge - ten minutes later - red rash all around her mouth and chin.

Is that weird to anyone else but me considering she has soy formula with no allergic reaction??? Does this mean I can't give her soy yoghurt AND cow's milk yoghurt??? She seemed to like it, was going for the spoon that I was holding like nothing else (still baby led solids I think, cos I just held the spoon up and she went for it.. lol)

So yeah - 20 minutes later the rash is still there... is there anything I need to be doing?? I haven't had an allergic reaction to anything before!!!! I don't think it was the flavouring (apricot) cos she's had them before with no problems...

Any thoughts.... welcomed....

Depends on what else is in the yoghurt. There could be preservatives, it could be teh apricot and the way it's processed. I've know kids to be allergic to processed fruit, but ok for the fresh and vice versa.

What ingredients are in it?

Dunno its the soy king ones - I'll have to google it, cos I threw out the cardboard pack ages ago and just had the container in the fridge...

Australian Certified organic soybeans, fruit, sugar, thickener (E 1442) vegetable gums (415, 412) live culture, natural and nature identical flavours, pure water.

ild be checking what else was in the yogurt that she has NEVER had. Is she k now?????

Her face is still red - its all over it now - my poor little tomato!! Even behind her ears... she doesn't seem affected - she is having her bottle and falling asleep..

If its not bothering her maybe its just a skin thing and it will go away as soon as the yogurt leaves her body??
Maybe call nurse on line or something like that??

But if she is anything like Bella then if she was in pain or not feling well she would be screaming the house down!!

If you have a lil paw paw ointment or bepanthen.. rub that in. sometimes the skin allergies can dry the skin out and sting.. so the ointment will help with that.

what brand os soy yoghurt was it?

I'll see how she is when we wake her at 10pm for her last feed - I'll put some moogoo on it I think, thats great stuff.

Honey, Jovie reacted to soy until she was 23 months. She would get exzcema rashes that would last for 2 days. She would also get the tum upsets. If you go to your GP and say that your DD is reacting to soy and mild based formula, or products they can get you a script for Neocate which is subsidised by the goverment and is cheaper than other formulas ;) also, you can say you did a trial and had a serious reaction.

The thing is that if it is an intolerance or allergy, it will get worse the more that is in her system.

Hun, I would go with Christy's suggestion. Quite a number of people who have dairy issues are also allergic to soy. I think it's like 50%? I don't know about why she's reacted to the yoghurt when she's been having formula, you'd need to speak to a dietician or allergist for that I think. Hopefully someone on here will be able to shed some light!

Or it could be something else in the yoghurt, not the soy :dunno:

Can I ask if you came up with a decision about whether you thought the soy yogurt was causing an allergic reaction in your l.o?

My daughter who is 9 months old has just been put onto a soy formula by a paed dietician in the last 2 weeks as we are querying a dairy allergy. From that first day we switched formula the greatest change we noticed was she immediatly started sleeping through the night, something she hasnt done in 4 months and something we had not considered might be related to an allergy. She slept through for a week and then started waking again (much to my disappointment!) However, as we are keeping a food diary I have looked back on what she ate on those days and have possibly linked it to either rye bread or soy yoghurt. (I am desperately hoping it is not just her randomly waking and is somehow linked to food, it's easier to change!)

I also noticed it was the same brand as you used and it was with the nectarine and the mango and peach flavours (I havent tried the others). I dont know if it could be additives (I have thrown the cardboard box away) or if, like you, are wondering if the yogurt might be stronger than the formula and therefore causing a reaction. She also had the red rash around her mouth and chin which she has had quite a bit recently but I couldnt decide if it was related to food or the fact she is teething and constantly has her hands or a toy in her mouth. I thought it might be food but my DH had convinced me otherwise. Your post has now got me wondering about it and whether it is a reaction I need to think more carefully about. The dietician told me that many people with a dairy allergy also have a soy allergy.

No we didn't try the yoghurt again and we pulled her off soy altogether - the naturopath that we saw said it wasn't a good choice, and to go with goats milk formula. So we are on that now.

how is she going on the goats formula?

Did the naturopath suggest having testing done to check for intolerances/allergies Mel? How is she going on the goat's milk, is it helping her bum?

The more I read and hear about soy, the more I think it's really not a great option at all, although it seems to to be considered the most obvious option after cow's milk ATM. It's a shame, because I quite like it, but we won't be having it in this house anymore I don't think.

ETA Sorry Mel, missed your post. How long has she been on it now? Did the naturopath think it might take a bit for her body to get used to it? Was there any suggestion of using an elemental formula?

Dunno if she suggested anything else - it was DH that saw her (went to get moogoo from natural health food store - ended up talking about poop!)

I'll have to quiz him. She's been on it a while now. I keep telling DH that we'll have to get her seen to by someone - not at the moment though, cos she's picked up a belly bug and is definitely not constipated at the moment :sick:

Mel, if she's been on it awhile now, and still no change, I think you're right, time to see someone about it and get some answers. Maybe she needs an elemental formula? Maybe it's something else entirely, I have no idea, but I think you're right thinking that there's something going on. Once she's well I would definitely be getting some advice :hug:

Mel, I have just seen this. DS1 reacted to dairy yoghurt the first time he had it at 8 months, but it was the first food he liked, so I started him on soy yoghurt. He had that for about 2 months or so before he started getting the same reaction to that as he had to the dairy yoghurt (just as you described, the red around the mouth). I think (but I'm not sure) that he only ever reacted to yoghurt with fruit in it, not vanilla. We know now that he has a sulphur allergy (we discovered this recently when Bactrim antibiotics gave him huge hives). So I am now wondering if this is what caused the reaction to the yoghurts - a lot of fruit is sulphur dried. He can eat dried fruit now with no worries and also eat yoghurt, but maybe when he was younger the amount of sulphur was enough to cause a reaction. I don't know for sure, I'm only guessing, but maybe it will help you as your situation seems to be very similar.

That's interesting Mel. I know alot of people are allergic to sulphur drugs.
