In my case they cut along the old one. Do you mind me asking why you are having another C/S??? and not a :vbac:
Yes they do cut along the same scar. They actually take the scar tissue out as trying to heal old scar to old scar doesn't heal as well as healthy skin. Its the same with the uterus scar also. They take the old scar out (usually only a few mils of tissue) that is why they suggest you don't have more then 4 C/S as every one you have after the first the uterus is getting that tiny bit smaller. Obviously this is not a problem the first few times but after multiple C/S you can imagine the decreased size of the uterus and thats why your at greater risks of prem labour/placental insufficency and rupured uterus when you have more then 4 C/S. In saying this I have seen women have more then 4 C/S and have minimal complications.

I learnt this from working in theatre and seeing them cut the old scar out from both the skin and the uterus and asking why. I actually haven't seen any info on it in my midwifery days. Will have to look it up though and confirming the info says the same thing.
See these are the things no-one tells you about. This right here is why I am going back to study my RN and Midwiffery(when bubs is bigger) so I can ensure mothers get all this info that I missed out on
So Leonie P I just noticed your hoping for a vaginal birth after 2 C/S Have you booked into a hospital that allows you to do this? I am just curious as our hospital doesn't offer this (unfortunately) but I know some do and women around this area do travel to other places for this. A friend of mine is having no 4 and she has had 2 C/S and I vaginal delivery. She is having a VBAC this time however the hospital said her labour has to start on its own and not go past 41weeks. She has gone to 41+3 with them all and had 3 IOL. I am just curious hope you dont mind me asking

Yes I am having him at the Gold Coast Hospital.
After my fisrt appt the Midwife I saw told me there was no way of attempting a :vbac: and when I protested she gave me a "we'll see at your 36wk app't" which was full of "I'll let the next sucker deal with you".I left the foom in tears and cried the whole way home. I decided about 3 wks ago that I would do some research and see just what the go was and found overwhelming support for a VBA2C as opposed to a repeat C/S.I decided to make another ante-Natal appt and got a much more supportive Midwife who I had actually seen a few times during my previous pregnancies. She took my case out and the OBs had a pow-wow, eventually they both came back into the room to discuss it with me.I asked a whole heap of questions to which he had no good case to support anrepeat C/S soreluctantly allowed me to attempt one.
I would advise your friend to try accupuncture to get the ball rolling.
Another question if you don't mind me asking. Why did you have the 2 C/S? Just wondering if its because of the position of the baby or placenta or fetal distress or a variety of other reasons as depending on why you had the previous ones will obviously give you a good indication of the chances of having a vaginal birth. Also did you labour previously with the first two as that also depends on how easy this labour might be. I just know women I have looked after having a VBAC seem to labour much faster (not necessarily easier) then if they have not laboured before if that makes sense. Im not making much sense. I know what I mean but I am having trouble descibing it. I will tell my friend about the accupunture. Hopefully that will halp her labour start spontaneously

I was 10 days overdue(according to them, I had no idea of the date of my last period) then induced the induction didn't work properly and therefor I was taking too long (6hrs and only 4-5cm -1station)so when they recommended a C/S I didn't know better so agreed. #2 was only 13 mths after #1 so it made sense to me to repeat C/S.

Ok so basically you don't have a clear idea. It difficult with IOL to C/S and when to decide enough is enough. Basically to me it sounds like you were not given enough of a chance to deliver vaginally the first time and of course after 1 C/S you are usually offered another one unless you question it and insist you want a VBAC. I hope you have the birth you want this time around.

Thanks for the info...I am having a c/s as the first 2 natural were really traumatic for me and the babies and nearly ended in c/s for both of them and #3 ended up emergency c/s and we nearly lost her so I am not taking any chances this time and are just having the c/s that they recommend. I have experienced the wonder of natural childbirth (I got there eventually) thankfully 2 times I just feel it is safer for me and bub to c/s. I have wonderful stress free pregnancies but awful births.

THis will be CS No 5 for me..just before the 4th one the Ob advised that there may not be enough tissue ( as they take additional tissue each CS cos they dont use scar tissue) to go LSCS and I may have to have a classical incision...ended up with a LSCS.
Saw the Ob 2 weeks ago and he advised this one may end up classical, and pending where the placenta is I may even need a hysterectomy (placental acretia where the placenta imbeds in the scar tissue is a higher risk for those of us with multiple CS). he also said they would repreat CS at 36-37 weeks so the uterus doesnt get too big and risk rupture.
The good news is the 12 week ultrasound showed the placenta has imbedded on the opposite side of the uterus, so no risk of placental accretia.
My oldest is 24 years, then I have 18, 17 and 4, so I have had big gaps. But I also have diabetes, blood clotting issues and am in my 40s so I guess fertlity alone was an issue for me, let alone complications!
Hope this gives CS mums hope that there is life after 3 C Sections!

You've done amazingly!!! Does your womb feel any different for this pregnancy?? Can you feel the scar??

It's not about c/s being 2nd best, I just hated the whole experience. I hated having my baby taken away from me and having everyone in my family hold my baby before I got to. Not to mention the 6 weeks of pain after and a highly unhelpful DH so I had to do everything whilst in serious pain.:
I have 2 scars from 2 c/s's. When I had my second c/s they told me they had to cut in a different are due to my old scar moving slightly. So I have 2 beautiful scars. (well you can hardly see them now!)
for my next elective I am thinking about hiring a private midwife if baby can not stay in recovery with me
I think health insurance covers this, if not finding a hospital that has a midwife for the baby
sorry your DH was not very helpful Leonie, I was not in a lot of pain afterwards hope next one also goes well (if we ever get pregnant)

Yes you do push out more with each pregnancy and I have to admit I can feel adhesions sometimes like little tugs...the other thing Ive noticed is that the scar area makes it harder to feel the fundal height so I freak myself out that I cant fell the uterus, but Im only 14 weeks (Due 22 October but will be rpt c section 36 weeks due to increased risk of uterine tear). I certainly didnt plan this one, thought it was early menopause!!!
The C section doesnt worry me after the last...they put intrathecal morphine in my spine and as soon as the spinal wore off I could get straight up and walk around like nothing had happened...seriously I couldnt believe I had been operated on 8 hours earlier!!!...my other 3 CSs I remember stooping for at least a couple of days! This also meant I could go see the baby in the NICU without waiting for a nurse to wheel me there!
did your Dr decide on the 36 wk delivery...and what implication will that have for bub? will she/he need to stay in hosp for a few weeks???:
Also is the Morphine in the spine a usual pain relief? I wasnt given morphine for any of my c-s.

My baby stayed with me in recovery I was feeding her in recovery... I didnt know that it was not normally the case. I hope its the same with this one. why dont they let the baby stay with you?
ljan - I am finding it seems to be feeling really tight around where the scar is like that skin obviously cant stretch like the rest I am 16 wks now and have popped out #4 baby I guess, is that normal and does it get uncomfortable the further along you go??
Another question I am curious about will they do a tubal ligation at the same time as they do a c/s? 4 is definately enough for me at 40 I have well and truly done my bit for the population.
Peg the only morphine I had is apparently they gave me suppositories before thy took my cathater (sp?) out, I commented to the nurse that I had expected to be in more pain she said give it time wait till the morphine wears off. I hadn't even realised I had it, it was great though I jumped outta bed and had a shower etc while I could still move freely.
Lets hope we all have safe arrivals with minimum pain if thats possible....good luck everyone

The Dr decided that 36 weeks would be best. He is a high risk specialist, so I tend to listen to him on these things! To tell the truth I would be stoked to make 36 weeks! Last one was a 31 weeker who stopped growing properly at 20 weeks, so this one is being heavily monitored. I guess pending how close to 26 weeks I get they may check fetal lung maturity. My 3rd was a 35 weeker and she came home with me at 3days...mind you she was 2.8kg, so I think it depends on bub.
About the spinal, I had never heard of it before, and when I got to the OT and up on the table the Anaesthetist told me that he would pop pain relief in the spine at the same time...I know it was called intrathecal morphine. I had morphine after each other C section but only IV. You might wish to ask your Dr about it, as if you havent had morphine before they may be reluctant to first time it in the spine. I have to say it was so good, and I have asked other friends since who have had C sections and they didnt have it....I will be urging it with this one, as you become mobile quicker and can stand upright, limiting the muscle and back pain after surgery.
I just read that some people get itching and vomiting with it,but I didnt experience either ( in fact was ravenous and ate 2 hours after being back on the ward!)
Anyone out there who has experience with intrathecal morphine????
