My brother was just telling me about a name that he has come across and it got me thinking about how we are pretty used to having inventive spelling these but what about inventive pronunciation?
The one he was telling me about was a little girl he knows who's name is spelled "Yvonne" which has always been E-von to me but her parents pronounce it Wyv-O-nee.
And I also work with a girl who's name is Siobhan which to me has always been Shi-vaughn but this one was Si-be-on.
Very interesting pro nunciations.
A bit like Anika (A - Ni - ka) and (an-i-ka)
ROFL Taff, I think the Si-be-on was just because they didn't know how it was really pronounced. I love the ones who have the whole Hyacinth Bucket thing going on - A woman I know now insists that her DD be called A-lee-see-a when it's really Alicia a-leash-a and I know that because I have heard her call her that myself ROFL.
That is beyond stupid....:

There is a girl in DD grade called Saroise (think I've spelt it correctly) pronounced Seesha. Quite strange if you ask me.
When I was growing up there was a boy named Sean but everyone pronounced it at as "Seen" rather than "Shawn". No one else had a similar name in town. I ended up not realising the correct pronunciation until Yr 11 when my family moved to Adelaide. No one in my hometown had any idea it wasn't pronounced "Seen". No one seemed to mind - gotta love the English language with all it's weird inconsistencies of spelling and pronunciations.
Re Alicia given its a derivative of Alice... it can be pronounced Al-ee-sha or Al-ee-cee-ah... I think its german or french or both... So maybe the different pronunciations stem from different regions of origin?
Those other names are just CRAZY!

I think there are alot of these out there... where people see the name written and and assume they are pronounced as they are spelt!:
I looked after a little girl Rachelle which I (and I hope most people or I am the silly one here :lol:) pronounce as Ra-shell and her parents pronounced it Rachel.
I also worked with a lady whose name was spelt Mary-Anne, she pronounced it Mariam.
Argh, I had another one but it is gone, if I remember I will be back :lol:.
lol how annoying!!! I understand when ppl like things spelt differently. Growing up I didn't know any other Jasmine's I know it is quite popular now but only with ppl much younger and growing up I always had to correct ppl and say with a e on the end but now it has become the most common spelling so no longer have to do that.
But anyway soooo don't get giving your kid a name that looks exactly like a different name! They will constantly have to say no my name is....

Reminds me of my DD's name Cendrine which english speaking countries pronounce as it looks Sen - dreen ... But the proper French why of saying it is Son - drien ;)
We loved both ways ... but we pronounce it is as we knew us Aussie's would say it :D

I think a lot of it comes down to the way kids are taught to read at school, by sounding things out, when the English language can have one seplling with tons or pronunciations (ough is a classic - through, though, thought, tough, plough, thorough, hiccough)

Funny you should say that. My sister was named Karen - pronounced - in the swedish manner - KAHren (not Karren like it is commonly pronounced in Australia) and after getting totally sick of people calling her Karren changed her name by deedpoll to Kaaren. Just so ppl would get it right.:

Re irish names... its not english its gaelic. The same could easily be said for many other languages. My name is pronounced nothing like how it is read in english (however the english way is how I let people pronounce it as its easier).
Oh and Aoife is Basically Eve, but more of an f sound than a v sound.
I used to work with an Aoife. She pronounced it like Eva but with an F. It's one of my favourite names.
Depends where you come from if you pronounce the e... its mostly like letting out air after saying eve, not really like saying a hard ah... its very quick... hard to explain... bah.
That's why I spelt Alister the way I did and not Alistair/Alastair because Australians generally have lazy pronunciation so it would never be said right and would always be said as Alister. However FIL always says Alastair ROFL.
The Alicia thing I always thought was funny because her Mum never used to say it that way, for some reason she just got a bee in her bonnet about it and decided it had to be the other way LOL.

ROFL, I can just imagine the Ahngela. People who talk with a plum in their throat say things wrong all the time, like the ones who will say Grarnt instead of Grant. It's hilarious, like they think they own the Queen's English LOL
Yes Trillian! I get that. My name is Deanne, pronounced D-Anne I always get D-arn. I hate it! I also get Deanna, Diane, Diana but thats a whole nother story about lazy readers! And when they write it they put an A on the end when they said my name correctly without one :rolleyes:.
I hate it on the phone.. my name is Sheree and I get Therese, Cherise, Cherry, Sherry you name it.. thats one reason I called my girls easily pronounced common names..that and the fact that their surname has 4 sylables!!

My name is Naomi you say it how you spell it but spelling it out its nay oh me easy right - yeah except for those so call me Niomi, or Neeomi or mary ?? I hate it when people say my name wrong its not that hard :rolleyes: I just get people calling me Nae and its all up hill from there.
Haha Nae - I'm Naomi too and I get Neeomi, Niomi, Leonie, Fiona etc. It's not a hard name - it's phonetic too so it's not hard. So yeah I just go by Nai as well.
I love the Sean than was pronounced Seen. There's an actor Sean Bean and DP always calls him Seen Been as he thinks his parents were cruel to name him that given his surname and the different pronunciations of the similar spellings - that would be very confusing to a child learning to read and spell!
I actually dont mind the pronunciations as much, as long as people are prepared to have it mispronounced, the first time. Once they tell you how to pronounce their name I dont see that there is any excuse for you not to try. I get cranky on this as our surname is German (or possibly Dutch) and is constantly mispronounced regardless of how many times we tell people.:
I find it varys by state and Vic (please dont shoot me Im a victorian!) seems to be one of the laziest as regards pronunciation. Hence why I can't name my child Sasha or Natasha, because people would say SASH-a and Na-TASH-a rather than SAH-sha, Na-TAH-sha etc
The poor woman i was in the bed next to when I had Milo (btw we get Meelo all the time, and sometimes Toby??) names her baby Natasha, with a AH sound, and had changed it within 24hours becuase HER OWN FAMILY werent making the effort to pronounce it the way she had chosen.
Gaelic and Welsh names are kinda hard - which is why Id ask rather than attempt most times :)

Mum & dad went through 3 spellings to get people saying it right.
Sara (se rah)
Zara (Ze rah!)
Then Sahra (Sah rah)
She still gets Se rah alot, but its a bit more common these days, so people are getting used to it.
I went to school with a Naomi, who always got Nyomi. There was a local girl actually called Nyomi.
