When did you bub sleep through??

I'm really struggling at the moment.
I've had 6 and a hlaf hours sleep the last 2 nights. I'm barely coping with th screaming!!

DD is nearly 9 months old...a while i think we are just getting teeth and thats why things are so bad, she didn't sleep through before this.

So when did your bub start to sleep through and did you do anything to encourage it???

What do you consider "sleeping through?" how many hours in a row? I say 5-6hrs.

Umm... when he was 12 months old. At 10-11 months he was still waking at least every 4 hours at night.
Now he sleeps like a champion (most of the time). At least 12 - 14 hours per night without a peep and a good 2-3 hours during the day. It WILL get better.
Forgot to add... we did nothing to encourage it. It just happened :)

Bella started sleeping through at about 3 months and has been doing it evey since. I didnt do anything to encorage it - she just decided one night that she could make it through. How ever I do give her a bigger bottle for her last and that sees her through for the 12-13 hrs she is asleep.

I really think all bubs are different... some do and some dont.

Sorry I cant give any advice but to say that it will happen one day.

I also find that on the odd occation that she does waje up that I just give her her dummy and she will go back to sleep...

I hope that you get some more sleep soon!

Do you know the funny thing - I miss her snuggles in the dead of night just her and me!!

ahhhh, two years on & still waiting....sorry that prob didn't help!!!

Though he sleeps from 7.30/8 til 4ish in the morn....so that's a good sleep & then back again til morning after a bottle.

It's a tough one & when you have up & down nights it takes it out of you but hang in there it will get better.

Even though she doesn't sleep through, does she usually have a good block straight up? If so then it could be teeth or an ear infection causing more constant wake ups & screaming. Charlie always woke a couple times a night with teeth (even with use of panadol) & more if ear infection. But we always figured something wasn't right & he was back to normal a few nights later.

Well, I think it was around 8 or 9 mths but then he stopped sleeping thru for a month at around 10 and 11 mths and now he generally sleeps thru but occasionally he needs a dummy resettle over night.
I stopped feeding him overnight at around 7 or 8mths and would just try and resettle him. I think it did help, but it took a bit longer to resettle without a feed.

Does she resettle after a feed? It sounds like you are spending a long time awake overnight (it is easier to get up overnight if you can feed and get back to sleep quickly IYKWIM) Have you tried co-sleeping? are you still BF? I (selfishly) stopped feeding o/n cos I weaned him and didn't want to be making bottles o/n :redface: (Also the MCHN said he really didn't need it) (I still fed him if he was upset and not settling, but generally he didn't need it)

Teeth will make it worse. Have you tried panadol or infants ibuprofen? That is what i tend to resort to when they are 'out of it'.

OMG SHES SCREAMING IN HER COT!!! Help me girls... I need some encourage ment...I'm not coping with this tonight... i don't know what to do... she has a clean nappy, had a bottle, no temp....doesn't want to be cuddled...

Is this normal behaviour for her? If you think she is getting teeth and is crying from pain, i would be inclined to give her some pain relief.

I hate it when they are like this. My DH is awesome at getting Flynn to settle when there is 'nothing' wrong and mummy can't fix it.

Hi Jen,

DD did this a couple of months ago. Would not sleep and we had to stay up with her until 3 am watching in the night garden.

I think it is just a phase they go through when they teeth, so hopefully your bub will be sleeping for longer again.

DD is 13mths is still not sleeping through. She still wakes up for a 4am feed, sometimes twice a night.

Tobias (& DD for that matter) has had nights where he just cries for an unknown reason. What I do is give him some panadol then take him in his room & rock him in my arms, he usually settles better when I hold his arm down from trying to play with my chin/face. Sometimes singing helps but sometimes he cant stand my singing LOL But I find the rocking while holding him snug tends to get him off to sleep once he stops fighting... within a couple of mins he usually stops crying & soon afterwards his eyes close.

I dont know if theres anything you can do to help them sleep through. Is she on formula or boobie? Is she having some solids at night before her last milk feed?

Both of mine have slept through from newborn so I definately didnt do anything to encourage that... it just happened. So I dont have any suggestions of how to change her sleep patterns (sorry!)

Have you tried the panadol? I cant really offer anymore solutions.

I really hope she's settled for you & this "phase" passes soon. I can only imagine how terrible you're feeling atm :hug:

Oh my god are we the same person??? Ive been going insane with trying to get my Bub to self -settle the past 3 nights.... I know how you feel!!! :hug: Sorry I have no hints though... but your not alone*

DD1 was 9 weeks old
DD2 was 8 weeks old
DS was 3 weeks old

Not saying it had anything to do with it what so ever and i dont know how your feeding....but all mine were FF (DD2 was BF/FF until 3 weeks old, DS til 10 days old).

Must be the night for it, I just got my screaming DD to sleep after a three hour battle. She's normally good so I think it's teeth. Anyway....

If your DD is not crying because she sick or teething etc, to help her sleep better I suggest consistancy with her bedtime. If your DD usually puts up a fight at bed time, make her pre-bed routine exactly the same every night, eg:

5pm dinner
5.30pm bath
6pm walk
6.45pm book and milk
7pm bed

I did this with my DD and it worked really well. I found the walk straight before bed really good as a wind down time for her. We need to do it a bit earlier now daylight savings is over.

If it's not normal for her to cry like this, ride the storm, don't make any plans for the days ahead and sleep during her naps to get some rest. Can you ask someome to come and help for a couple of hours during the day while you catch up on sleep?

Jenni - i hope she's ok now. It's hard to cope when you haven't had much sleep. I've been there this week and my little one is 20 months! She has probably only slept through the night 10 times in her life. She has a dummy - so wakes if it's not in her mouth when she stirs. I used to rock her to sleep, but for the past 3 months she's been settling herself to sleep - i think that has helped.
Anyway, I haven't helped at all, but just wanted you to know that you're not alone.

it might be a bit of separation anxiety she is about that age... is she clingy during the day? does she cry when you leave the room? in my case my DD slept through from 10 weeks to about 5 months and then stopped :wall: now she wakes once or twice a night usually, but occasionally sleeps through. Then the other night she cut four teeth in one night and was up every 90 mins.

jenjorga, my little one is almost 7 mnths and still not sleeping thru. last ngiht was a shocker, he fed at 9pm, then another bottle at 1ish then abother bottle at 5ish, it was ridiculous, my sleep was crap last night

do you mean that you have had 6 half hrs over 2 nights or just last night.. if you got 6 hrs in a night i personally dont think that is to bad, but if it was over 2 nights no wonder u feel terrible

I also think that in the nxt week or so i need to start a bit of controlled crying, my DS is feeding well and draining bottles overnight as if he is hungry bit then he refuses milk durting the day.. i need to fix it as well, as the broken sleep is slowly killing me. I also have a 2year old, so i just feed him the bottle for i can get back to sleep

We did get some sleep last night, she slept between the two of us because i just couldn't cope with getting up everyth 5 mins.

Yes, she does cry evrytime i leave the room but doesn't seem to be clingy during the day.
Unfortunatly neither of us have any family in Sydney but we do try and get friends to come and help us out. I HATE not having my mum around to help :(

Thanks for the support girls. I needed it... i really wasn't coping last night and i think DD could pick up on that too. Lets hope it gets a bit better from here.

six and a half hours over 2 nights... 1 1/2 hrs the first night then 5 hours (broken) the next night.

I have probably told you before but DD2 is almost 3 and doesnt sleep through! Thomas does some nights and then not for a few..... DD1 sleeps like a dream now...... As you can guess i "do" nothing to change this habit! But this works for us...not everyone :)

Hoping for a better night tonight for you,. it is extra hard when u dont have family. Broken sleep its a form of torture- i hate it.. Hope all of us who babies wake often during the night start getting better sleeps soon . take care

my ds1 started sleeping through at 16 months old...

DD#1 - after 6mths old
DD#2 - after 5 weeks old
DD#3 - 17 months old...although we still have the odd night where she may want a drink of water, cuddle, or just to know im still around.....;)

Claire woke every 1 or 2 hours till she was 12 months. The very first time she slept through the night (like 5 hours in a row) was when she was 10 months old. That was just a one off though and she didnt do it again until she was about 14 months old. She started regularly sleeping through at around 14 months. She stopped wanting overnight feeds just before that. Occassionally she will stil wake up over night, but not often. She kicks her blankets off and then gets all upset because she's cold. Sometimes I think she has bad dreams too and she wakes up asking for a cuddle if that happens.

DS1 didn't sleep through till he was 20 months, still waiting for it with DS2, he's waking alot at night now, I'm trying to go with the flow, but it's hard when you're so exhausted! I hope your DD settles now the teeth have cut through, must be painful for them, I think that's why DS2 has started being unsettled at night, some nights won't sleep anywhere but in the bed with us, I guess it's better than getting up every 5 minutes and at least I keep warm :lol: It's hard when you don't have the family there either, my parents have recently moved and I really miss having my mum around to help out when I need a break!

DD would sleep for 6-8 hours straight from about 6 weeks - my MCHN considered this to be sleeping through. Unfortunately, DD was going to bed at 630pm so was waking up about 2am most mornings for a feed and then back to sleep again until about 6 or 7am depending...

Then she got worse... refused to go to bed, would scream in the middle of the night, would wake up 3-4 times over night... I was working shift work and it did my head in. When she was approx 16mths we moved her to a big bed and things improved dramatically. We also told her "The Rules" every night when we put her to bed - she loves rules! The rules were; No calling out, no getting out of bed, sleep all night. It took probably another 3 months before we were getting uninterrupted sleep... she now sleeps from about 730 (earlier if she is really tired) until about 730am... sometimes later on weekends... except this morning. She has been in my bed all night for some reason and I've been up since 6am :doh:

We encouraged DD to sleep through by;

making sure she had access to water throughout the night (a bottle next to her bed that she can reach)
her fav teddy in bed with her and she can pick one other toy
Reminding her of "The Rules" when tucking her in
Telling her Mummy and Daddy will come in if she needs us but she has to stay in bed
Praising and rewarding her when she sleeps all night (sticker chart in her room)
Cut down her afternoon sleep (I can always tell if CC lets her sleep longer than an hour ;))
Making sure she goes to bed with two dummies so if she loses one (sometimes loses them down the side of the bed), she still has another one

But if she is really unsettled or upset (like last night) we bring her into bed with us...
