Now reading Proper Care and Maintenance of Friendship by Lisa Verge Higgins. It's about an adventuristic friend who passes away and leaves all her friends a letter of things they must do. It's great reading so far...can see a movie in this book :)

Now reading A Little Coffee Shop in Kabul, again I am hooked, a little bit shocked and very in love with the characters.
I'm reading zilch. Absolutely nothing right now. Need to get reinspired. Currently going to bed and working on Sudoko puzzles instead of reading.

oh i just saw this thread. im reading the true blood books at the moment. i usually love the real "thinking" books, so the TB series is a bit against what i would normally read. they are really easy to read. TBH i havent read anything since i was in hospital having bubs. the night he was born,everyone had gone home,i couldnt sleep so thought i would read. i read half the book...but dont remember any of it!! LOL. so iv been trying to start it again.
the last time i did sudoko before going to sleep, i dreamt about doing sudoko....aaaalll night. imagine trying to do a puzzle aaaalll night. damn it was annoying.never again lol:
LOL, mummajj, I have to make sure I complete the puzzle, otherwise my mind just keeps ticking over.
I love Cathy Kelly! My SIL have all the books between us :lol: I love all those Irish writers :) I go to Fantastic Fiction UK and have a look to see what my favourite writers are about to come up with. Sophie Kinsella who writes the Shopaholic books also writes as Madeleine Wickham...little bit more raunchy than as Sophie Kinsella!!
I didn't know that about Sophie Kinsella! I met Cathy Kelly, she's tiny and gorgeous and so friendly. Have a read of the Penny Vincenzi books - the spoils of time trilogy. Her books always start of complicated because there are a stack of characters, but they're a fantastic read.

Love in the driest season is a beautiful book. It's about and American Journo and his wife trying to adopt a baby from South Africa. Some sad bits, a great read still.:
A woman of independence by Kirsty Sword Gusmao. How she and Xanana Gusmao came together, this was a fascinating.
I'm reading The Brave by Nicholas Evans
I'm only a couple of chapters in but I'm hooked. It jumps around time wise - from when the main character was a boy, to when he was an adult and there are other characters too that have the same thing happen. It was a bit offputting to start when the two main characters are Tom and Diane, the same names of two main characters in his book The Horse Whisperer, but they aren't the same people. It's about a man who's estranged son has been charged with murder for killing innocent civilians while on duty with the marines in Iraq. It brings up Tom's own demons - the book starts with him saying goodbye to his mother as she waits in death row. It hasn't come together yet, but I'm enjoying it.
i'm re-reading cloudstreet. we've taped the tv series but i want to re-read the book first because it's been a few years. i've only just started it. it's not my favourite tim winton but i did enjoy it the first time round.
Ahh Sloane! I love cloudstreet but don't have Foxtel. Can you let me know if it's awesome? I'll go and buy it on dvd when it comes out if it is.

I am reading When God was a Rabbit. This book is just brilliant, it's had me giggling and holding back tears on the train, much to the amusement of the commuters I am sure :)
I read a book a few years ago called "Life is Good". About an African American man who learns to read when he's I think about 90. Goes through his life and what he has overcome. Truly brilliant book if you like real life, beat the odds kind of stuff.:
I've just finished The Brave too. Was a good read - very hard to put down. Am now reading Island Beneath the Sea by Isabelle Allende. About Haiti under French rule from the perspective of a slave girl.
Just finished Steven Kings The Cell. Currently terrified to answer my phone.
Thinking if starting IT again. I love Steven King a little more than is probably socially acceptable :)

currently reading The b!tch in the house. from memory it isb 26 women telling there stories on life, sex, love and relationships.
so far its been prety good. a nice change from my usual horror/true crime.
I am just about to finish Friendship Bread. I had to stop reading on the train the other day as I was trying my hardest not to cry :lol:
It's such a beautiful book about loss, love and reconciliation in a little town in the US. The title comes from a bread called Amish Friendship Bread, you are given a zip lock bag of dough and divide and make something with your bit and give the other portions to a friend.

I'm about halfway through "Catcher in the Rye"... classic teen angst. I like it, but... I don't know. I just can't get into it at the moment, I've put it down for now. Might pick it up again when I'm feeling depressed.
I am a few chapters into "A Tiny Bit Marvelous" By Dawn French and I am loving it! Very funny. Journal entry-ish, each chapter swaps between Mum, her (so far) horrid teen daughter, and 16 y/o son who thinks he's Oscar Wilde (his bit is just fantastic, so funny).
Next two books on my "to read" list are: Frankenstein (Mary Shelley) and The Children's Book (A.S Byatt). Both quite wordy books, just not feeling the concentration at the moment... I get two sentences in and my brain goes kablammo.
Well I am reading something very light :) I have finished The Carrie Diaries and now onto The Carries Diaries Summer in New York.
I have never watched Sex and the City. This is about Carrie at High School and the Summer in New York is the follow up after High School and about how she met Miranda and Co. It's light reading..I am enjoying it.
I just finished "A Tiny bit Marvelous" and it fell flat :( a bit bummed. Still some chortle moments, quite a funny light read. I was hoping for a little more though.
Now to start on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.... wish me well, I'm assuming its scary :hide:

I haven't read anything other than parenting books and self-help/anxiety books for a long time and picked up The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver the other day. Have read it before but loved it - anyone else read it??? It's about a Baptist family that go to the Congo in the 50's to preach to the natives! Intriguing story and the way it is written is great.
I also recently read One Thousand Gifts - it is a Christian book that is all about changing you life by being thankful. Really great read but took me a while to get into it. It made me start a new blog though so must have had an impact!
I am a re-reader too - I will quite happily re-read books 4,5 6 + times if I love it! I have read the HP series through about 5 times from start to finish! :rofl:

If you are looking for fact based, I can highly recommend Jesus Freaks. It's an amazing read about the Children of God/The Family International. This is about Ricky "Davidito" Rodgriuez who was to be the next chosen one and Son of David "Moses" Berg the leader of this Religious Cult. In January 2005 a woman was found stabbed three times with her throat slit by a young man....it's the lead up to this.
Ahh Poisonwood Bible, always wanted to read that and forgot!
I'm reading Quentins by Maeve Binchy. Its about a high end restaurant in Dublin and the stories of the patrons there. And about a woman who falls in love with a married man and it ends badly, where she and her family lose everything. She gets a job helping a friend who runs a production company and they decide to do a documentary on the restaurant. It's an easy, light read, one I've read before and enjoying again.
Reading Game of Thrones - better than the TV series and quite addictive.
i am currently reading huxley's "brave new world". saw it at the airport and was only $11 and i remembered that it was on a reading list at highschool but at the time i chose to read 1984 instead...so here i am 10 years later back to that old reading list :lol:
loving it. it is a book written at the very beginning of WWII and the influences of the times are heavily apparent with concepts of creating a perfect society with perfect people (explorations of eugenics and social modelling techniques etc).
the story itself is set in the far away future where babies are created in labs and grown in bottles and the concept of a mother and a father is nothing more than smutty pornographic thinking lol. it follows the story of two main characters that one day go and visit the "savages" (those that live without civilisation and give birth to their babies and farm their own food and have free thought) and how they deal with experience once they go back to "civilisation".
very cool and not a long book, so good to read with kids and other life stuff going on that might not allow for an intense literary journey.
I am reading a few books at once (which I have a terrible habit of!).
1. Unconditional Parenting by Alfie Kohn. It's about an approach to parenting that avoids using rewards/praise/punishment and focuses more on the relationship with the child. Its very interesting and possibly the best parenting book I've ever read! I am loving it as it is really challenging me to think about my automatic reactions at times with DS which are based on power and control.
2. Raw Deal by Wayne McKay. It's a kind of autobiography. McKay had a troubled childhood, lived on the streets and did lots of gaol time. It's about how he turned his life around. It's quite annoying and I am not enjoying it. He just raves on and on and kind of big notes himself a lot. He still has a lot of the criminal way of thinking (IMO) but he is an awesomely talented artist. It's not the book I thought it would be though.
3. The Post-Birthday World by Lionel Shriver. Started this a couple of months ago but still in the early stages of the book. I loved We Need to Talk About Kevin so have high hopes for this book. So far it's really good. Its about a married woman who, over time and to her surprise I think, develops a relationship with another man. So it's about the choice she makes after they first kiss. (I'm not up to that bit yet!).
4. The Complete Buddhism for Mothers by Sarah Napthali. It's three books in one and uses Buddist teachings and principles in thinking about parenting and self identity. I have only just started this (page 21!) but plan to spend much more time reading it when I finish books 1 and 2 above.
OOOH Kaz I read Buddism for Mothers a while back and really loved it, might have to hunt it down at the library again! Unconditional Parenting sounds great too - my automatic reactions are shocking and I need some strategies in place for when I am tired and cranky in particular - Im so quick to react at times..
Cassius2 - I love Brave New World! I have been meaning to re-read it, that and 1984.
AFM - I have been trying to read Frankenstein, but I just suck at concentrating at the moment. Thinking of picking up an old favourite - most probably Hitchhikers Guide or maybe I'll read High Fidelity again. Can't decide.
Just read "First & Only Women" - about some of the great women of history, really interesting - who would have known there was a female pope?! They only found out she was a woman when she gave birth...on a horse...!!
Also just re-read To Kill A Mockingbird, my all-time favourite :)
A Season To Remember by Sheila O'Flanagan, easy to read whilst breastfeeding.
I just finished water for elephants and oliver twist. It was my first ****ens book. I loved it. Can't believe i haven't read one before. Will definitely be going through the rest.
Kaz, I'm another bad one for reading several books at once ;) Right now, I'm getting through Howard Zinn's 'A People's History of the United States', 'The God Delusion' by Richard Dawkins (and so far, not understanding what all the fuss is about, I'm not religious but I'm finding the tone of this book to be a tad arrogant, it's hard to keep reading when I feel like I'm being 'talked down to'), and just for fun, I'm catching up on Lucky Santangelo's latest adventures in 'Goddess of Vengeance' by Jackie Collins :D
Oh no! Poor Charles. He provides such important commentary on social reform back in the 1800s and then gets blocked by the BB swear censor. What would he think?!?!:
