Where to begin?

    Where to begin?

I want to start reading books again! I used to read at least a book a month, if not one a week! But since I have had children, that has gone by the wayside. I have read only a handful of books in the last 7 years. So, my new years resolution is to read a book a month. But I have no idea what is good, or where to begin!
I would like something that is fairly easy to read, and not too in-depth so that I can put it down and easily pick it up and get back into the story again 4 hours later!
    So, what are you reading?

I was in the same situation! I read game of thrones when I have a big block of time eg away on holidays but right now I am reading books by Jane Green and Anita Shrieve they are light and easy to read. I finished my sisters keeper by Jodi Picolut a few weeks ago it was heartbreaking but a good read.

I've just started Graeme Simson "The Rosie Project" Has been recommended to me by heaps of different people from heaps of differnet makes of life. So far I'm enjoying it and it's an easy read.

I was the same way. For me it helped to get books that had an associated movie or tv series, that was it was not 100% new to me. I started with the Southern Vampire Mysteries, True Blood starts of pretty much the same, but then deviates, so ends up a bit confusing. Also read the first Dexter (must continue as very enjoyable) and Silence of the Lambs (still engrossed me even though I had seen the movie about 10 times as it was so well written).

Collections of short stories by different authors are good for getting a feel of some authors and some series.

Oooh, I like this game. What kind of books do you like?

I'm reading one of the "Girls Night In" compilations at the moment (a bunch of short chick-lit style stories) and the Divergent trilogy is next in my list.

I'm aiming for 1-2 a month, too, this coming year

I'm reading the hunger games. I love them.

I also love any book by Jodi Picoult or Katie Flynn (set in England around war time, family saga type stories).

I so could have written this! My New Years resolution is the same, read at least one book per month. I've gone from reading a book every few days to a book every couple of months.. But things are about to change

Mum gave me 'Light Between Oceans' to read a few weeks ago. It was an awesome story. I live in the area the story was set too, so that made it more interesting for me. Emotional, but a great read! I'd love more suggestions like this if anyone has any! (Though I'm trying NOT to read too much, coz I get NOTHING done!)

I read The Iron King yesterday. It's fantasy, & really not my style, but was still a good read. 5 books in the series, not sure I'll continue, but who knows

I read a book called Trafficked on my trip away in October too. True story. Great read.

I started reading a series of VC Andrews books about 10 years ago. I might try find them to download. I read the first 2, then stopped coz MIL had loaned the 3rd one out & I refused to go any further without it, lol. I think I'll have to start again now.

(Sorry, I don't have any friends who really read & its been a long time since I allowed myself to, so I'm a little excited to be able to discuss it )

    Re: Where to begin?

I've read the Hunger Games series, the 50 Shades series and the Harry Potter books. Those are pretty much the only books I have read since I have my kids, there may have been one or two more that I can't remember.
I used to read fantasy type books- Robert Jordan in particular. Also a few of Anne Rice's books. I can't even really remember what else!
I don't particularly like real life stuff, I like to lose myself in a book. I have one of the Game of Thrones books, but it's so big! It's a little daunting!

If you like the epic fantasy type stuff, but want an easy read, try Eragon.

For something along the lines of the Hunger Games, try the Divergent series by Veronica Roth (soon to be a movie) or even The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater.

If you want more of the light & fluffy with a paranormal edge, there's plenty in the YA space - City of Bones by Cassandra Clare or my young friends tell me the Halo series are good too.

The Cross stitch series by Diana Gabaldon is a great series, also known as the Jamie and Claire series

    Re: Where to begin?

Well The Iron Fey series might be worth the read then? Its set in the Nevernever, by Julie Kagawa. There are 5 in the series. I read the first because it was a freebie on ITunes '12 days of Christmas' giveaways. Read it in a day :/

The more I think about it, the more I want to see what happened after she went back to the Nevernever So in a day or 2 I might be able to tell you what the next book is like as well

    Re: Where to begin?

Richelle Mead's "Storm Born" series is apparently good. It's that fantasy style thing, too.

I haven't read it, but I've read her Vampire Academy series, and I'm reading her Alchemist series as she writes them (have one en route right now!!)

DH likes fantasy, some of his fave authors are Wurts, Feist, Eddings, Gemmel, Moon (she's more sci fi though), Hobb, etc - but I think they're all pretty long, and some are heavier than others. But very good, apparently.

    Re: Where to begin?

You should read David eddings The Belgarid if you like that genre. A bit more complex, but one of my favs
Also traci harding, the ancient future series
trudi carnavan the black magician series.

The last two are pretty easy reads.
