... thanks heaps Rouge, yey i don't wanna do the ' wrong ' thing and i do care about others children especially if they were to have health issues with a simple cake i bought in but yeh at the same time want my DD to have a fun moment for her too :dance::

Hate to say it but technically Smarties are off the menu for nut allergy kids because they are made on the same production lines as other products containing nuts (my DS has a severe nut allergy).
Just decorate the cake with 100s and 1000s.
... :D Thanks Curly but i mentioned it in one of my post's here, yeh was in supermarket last night and read that on side of the Smarties box that they are made on production line of nut items as you said ... but thanks for mentioning it again in case anyone might have overlooked my post about it :hug::
Our Kindy is a strictly no cake kindy. They make a cupcake shape out of playdoh at the end of the session and stick candles in it for the child to blow out. The child also gets to sit in the special birthday chair.
Our Kindy is also very health concious. Not even allowed to take tubs of yoghurt which I personally think is a bit OTT. Their reasoning is a child might spill it.
we also have a no egg, nuts or smearable dairy rule, ive make cake for DD for play lunch, i make a crazy cake will find you a recipe, it normally has spices in it but i make it chocolate using cocoa
heres one i found online:
Ingredients
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
3/4 cup vegetable oil
2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups cold water
Directions
1.Sift flour, sugar, salt, soda, and cocoa together into a 9 x 13 inch ungreased cake pan. Make three wells. Pour oil into one well, vinegar into second, and vanilla into third well. Pour cold water over all, and stir well with fork.
2.Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 30 to 40 minutes, or until tooth pick inserted comes out clean. Frost with your favorite icing
:o I reckon that's OTT, too! I've never heard of a dairy allergy which can be set off by contact (unlike nuts and shellfish)?? I think the child would need to ingest the dairy.:

Our kinder has a no-nut policy, which I think is fairly standard these days. Home made cakes or bickies are always welcome. More welcomed than preservative-laden cakes from the supermarket! The kids with allergies have suitable cake in the freezer, which is defrosted so that they can celebrate with the birthday kid. This cake is supplied by the parent of the child with the allergy.
We don't have any parent's who don't like their child to partake in the odd slice of brightly coloured, sugar-containing cake for any reason other than allergies. I am very happy for my kids to sing happy birthday and enjoy a piece of cake. If a parent did have a problem with it, I would suggest that they discuss this with the teacher and perhaps supply a suitable alternative for their own child so that that child might join in the celebration. I don't think all the kids should miss out on a treat because one or two parent's object on the grounds that it's not 'healthy'.
So, to the OP... IMO you should make a nice cake, ensure that none of the ingredients or decorations contain nuts (or traces of) use No Egg if you're concerned (we had a child in my daughter's kinder with an egg allergy and the No Egg works a treat in cakes :D Most parent's CHOSE to use this product so that the little girl with the allergy could eat the same cake as everyone else... none of the kids even noticed the difference). Decorate the cake with some icing and 100's and 1000's. Take a list of all the cake ingredients to kinder with the cake and be proud of your home made efforts!! When did making a birthday cake for a bunch of kids become so stressful????

im not sure how making a cake that isnt full of junk is making kids miss out... its only us adults that care about the cake. kids like the birthday as a whole and any type of cake will do the job! yup even a playdoh one.:

i think its a great thing to show your kids that you care about others and therefor will change , easily changable things for there friends. flexibility is the key... for everything! it definatly isnt hard to make an allergy free cake if that is what is needed to INCLUDE everyone.
How is a standard home made cake 'full of junk'?? I assume you mean the sugar? Sugar is part of a healthy diet - we should be teaching our kids about moderation. The odd birthday cake at kinder is IMO moderate consumption.
I disagree that a kid would be as happy with a playdoh cake as they would with a homemade cake. The birthday child gets to hand a piece of cake to all his/her friends and they enjoy eating the cake together. There is pleasure in the sharing and pleasure in the eating. Entirely more satisfying to your average kid than blowing out a candle on top of playdoh. If I asked my kid 'would you like a homemade cake you can eat or a playdoh cake?'... well the answer would be obvious!
I have no problem catering to children with allergies. I have a problem catering to parents who expect me to live by the same ideology that they do. I agree, make a nut-free cake, dairy-free, egg-free if necessary. Include all the children in the experience. But if you don't want birthday cake at kinder because you don't like your kid eating cake, I'm pretty sure you would be in the minority. Again, it's about moderation. No one is going to force your kid to eat a piece of iced cake... but my kid is still going to eat it. Why should MY kid miss out on cake because YOU think it's junk?
