oohh PZ I LOVE your curls!!
OK, hair wash day tomorrow. How do you make this shampoo? Just a jug with baking powder and warm water all mixed up? Or does it have to be in a bottle? Do you use all the mixture at once or just a little bit, like with normal shampoo?
Ditto the conditioner.
I am wavering between doing this now or finishing the shampoo bottle first as it is nearly finished, so less junk in the bathroom.
I do it in two squirty bottles (posted a pic here) with warm or hot water. I tend to spray it in bit at a time, then massage in, then spray a bit more, massage in etc. It's odd at first to use stuff that isn't foamy and slippery. Then if there's any left and I'm satisfied its even I pour the rest in.
Hair has officially entered the feral phase. So dry at the ends, greasy at the roots. Missing my straight, more predictable (albeit more damaged) hair. Pushing on!
I thought of you when I was in line at the supermarket behind a man with loooong hair and lovely curls in gorgeous condition, I could tell he wasn't a frequent washer. Then he gave his head a jolly good scratch.
buying squirt bottles tomorrow. :) hope to find apple cider vinegar too.
a tad ot but have heard about using vinegar instead of fab softer in washing machine? anybody heard that? if we are using on our hair then it would make sense :)
I was reading something today that had me wondering about doing this. I wash my hair once a week and wear it in a ponytail as it is. Hmm...might call my hairdresser to see if she can fit me in Wednesday. Then I'll be good to try going no-poo. Can I just get apple cider vinegar in the supermarket?
i washed my hair with bicarb today. these days i only get the chance to wash it once (twice if im lucky) a week anyway and it had been about that since i last washed it so i figured it cant get any worse. i dont have any acv tho so will have to do that when i next go to the shops. apparently the acv is really important to help balance the pH level of your hair out after the bicarb.
my hair is really thin and fine and although it feels clean its still really limp and hanging...no body in it like i usually get after a shampoo (even tho that normally only lasts a day or two anyway)
just washed hair
Lots of color came out with wash :dunno:
Lets see what happens now- It'll let it air dry today
hair is ok. feels clean without being too dry.
had to use regular white vinegar as can't get cider here but that's all good.
not too fluffy which.surprises me.
how's the rest of y'all going? pz?
The shampoo and conditioner thoroughly cleans my hair, that's for sure. It is very fluffy the day after. But feels nice enough. A little dry but again, that's heat damage. Thinking of making a hair butter for some moisture. I find washing every 2-3 days works best here. I also think a hair trim and a lot of thinning is in order because I have WAY too much hair for natural curls!
your hair is beautiful
Pz, your hair looks awesome thus far!
I was thinking about trying this, but I question whether my hair would handle it as I have really really oily hair, I have to wash it everyday because if I dont the oil just goes nuts and my hair looks like Ive poured oil all over it.
PZ - you have the most amazing hair !! I'm so jealous!!!
I'd love to do this...
any updates? hows your hair going?
I found the natural products stripped the color from my hair.
so Im off the wagon for that reason but my hair was soft and shiny while using them. alittle frizzier but mehh.
how is it going pz?
I would be interested in trying this but I have short hair, hence oilier, and very fine/limp. I tend to get buildup from commercial products, ie dandruff. So maybe this would be better for me.
My hair dye started coming out massively.... I'm back on the poo train. I don't even know why.
How are you, PZ?
Great! Although I did start straightening my hair again :shhh: But I'm not using any product. My hair feels great. Definitely past the overcompensation greasy phase now. My hair stays cleaner for WAY longer, smells awesome, doesn't get greasy as fast and has a much healthier look and feel to it. Don't think I'll go back to products, may just use a bit of coconut oil or Shea butter for frizzier days come summer. My colour hasn't been stripped out (wish it would) and I can't wait for my hair to be completely free of colour again. But yeah, loving the no poo. WM, I would totally give it a go, your hair sounds perfect for it.
First day of no-poo and gotta say loving the feel so far. Love that squeaky clean feel. Was a bit hesitant at first, but here's hoping it clears up my product build up. Probably start with every 2nd day then progress to less often from there. Much easier to brush too.
I was surprised at how clean it got my hair, and soft.
It should cut through the product build up in a few washes :)
Ok now to resist the urge to wash it today. Have swimming today, so normally like my hair after a swim then rinse under shower.
Be prepared for your hair to go through a few weeks of total grossness if you don't use anything. If you use the homemade shampoo, the grossness time should be less. I've worked out that I need to wash my hair every 3-4 days, so that's what I do. When I was wearing it curly, every 2 days was best.
i have noticed that the whole total grossness is worse between shampoo washed than it is between bicarb washes.
Yep same!
So it's been over two months of no poo. My hair is great! So, so healthy. Soft, shiny, stays clean for much longer, more manageable. I still straighten it sometimes, it feels a lot less damaged. Basically, totally loving it and never going back!
I've also been shampoo free for two months now. Mine never went particularly oily, but it does seem dry and limp now. Is there some natural thingo that I could try? What form does the Coconut oil need to be in? I can only find cooking coconut oil at the supermarket, is that suitable? And do you just rub it in there or do you wash it out after like a conditioner?
I've been using Shea butter for my dry ends, bought online. But coconut oil is good too. I believe it needs to be unrefined? But I could be mistaken. I have a tub I bought from an Indian grocers, can be used for cooking but it was in the beauty isle. What I would do is rub it into my hair until its all coated but not thickly so, then glad wrap my hair, put an old beanie on or a towel, and sleep with it in overnight. Then the next day, wash your hair. Do the treatment weekly to fortnightly. Sometimes a little tiny bit rubbed into the ends or wherever it's dry too helps, but I've found too much is yuck.
I've been doing this for a couple of months. Basically, I took the lazy/cheap option. I have lots of baking soda and acv, so I just top up an old shampoo bottle every wash. I am going a day or so extra between washes, but I still have an itchy scalp. I try not to blowdry after washing in baking soda, as it just boofs it up. However, I am overdue for a haircut so that may be contributing.
I can't say I'm convinced yet but I'll keep it up because it's cheaper than other "natural" products and I'm paranoid about chemicals. I've tried the just wet it thing, but that didnt work at all for me. My hair gets too greasy.
So if you have to wash it out, what do you wash with? I haven't washed mine with anything but water for the last two months but I notice there is some sort of build up that probably would like to be washed away. I think I have some shea butter or cocoa butter or something that did zippo for stretch marks but might be good for hair? What about bio oil?
L&B, what is acv? What is your recipe?
Apple cider vinegar, used as a natural conditioner.
Going great here, no itchy scalp. Definately less build up. But mines short so much easier to manage. Going to hairdresser to get my hair coloured on Wednesday so will see how that goes. First ever professional colour.
This is really interesting to read. I find that if I don't wash my hair each day it just feels gross. I'm not sure I could wait to get past the 'gross' stage. I wish I could though!
Chody, it took me two goes to get past it. First time was a couple of years ago and I only lasted maybe 3 weeks. Once you do get through it, and it's not too bad, it's so nice. The main thing I can't get over is how clean my hair stays, and for so much longer!
Arte, I put 1tbsp baking soda in a squirty bottle with 1 cup warm water for the shampoo, and 1tbsp ACV and 1 cup warm water for the conditioner, then spray and massage through, rinse. It takes getting used to, the no lathering, and for a while it made my hair feel quite wiry when wet and very fluffy when dry (it really thoroughly cleans), but now it's great.
been stalking this page abit trying to decide whether to do it, and had to LOL at the date on PZ's post in the shot.
impressive work PZ ;) lol!

I.uploaded via tapatalk so I hope it's done right! :/
I did this for three weeks. My hair was *never* clean the whole time I tried it and I was washing daily (down from 4 days with shampoo; my hair was greasy after just 5-6 hours). Just couldn't get it to work, no matter how many times I washed.
I'm gutted, I really wanted this to work and work well!
lol hope!! it must work as she looks so young!
Omg, my secret's out! *flees*
