Default So I have this epic cake idea...

DD turns 3 next month, and has decided on Frozen as her party theme (cue long groan from all the mothers who are sick of hearing about this movie ). I love making her cakes but this one stumped me a little - so far I've made a cake in the shape of a 1, with smarties around the edge and her name on it, and a big cake in the shape of Iggle Piggle. But I didn't think I could make an Anna or Elsa cake lol.

So, DH and I have come up with this: 2 round cakes, a smaller one on a larger one. They'll be vanilla, with blue swirls through, and white icing. We'll put blue and white chocolate shards, and blue toffee shards, around the sides. On top and standing at the sides will be figurines - Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Sven, Olaf and maybe Hans. He comes with the package so might put him there. Might put some more toffee shards at the top with Anna and Elsa, and the candles.

But, all this comes with questions!

    1. What's the best type of cake for this? Because the bottom one will have to support to the top one.
    2. What do I use as support for the top one? I'm thinking a disc the same size as the top cake, with pillars going through the bottom cake, is that right?
    3. What icing would be best to get it a decent white colour? My buttercream is always still kinda yellow, no matter how much I beat it. I'm totally utterly useless as fondant so that's no good, plus I need to stick the shards to it.
    4. How do I colour white chocolate? I can't use liquid colours, can I? And do I melt it with anything else to make it better, or just the chocolate and colour?
    5. What's the best way to colour the toffee? I've never actually made toffee before so this is going to be completely new to me.

I think that's all, any help would be very much appreciated!

    Hi Teeki,

I can't answer any of your questions, but I just searched 'Frozen themed cakes' in Pinterest, and found heaps! There should be instructions & tutorials if you are looking for ideas. Worth a look I think

Rose that link you sent is amazing, thank you! The cake is a bit more complex than I can do lol, but the shards are exactly what I'm after. I did a quick Google and most things that come up are Pinterest. I'm not on Pinterest and honestly don't really get it ( ) so I didn't actually look at those ones. Thanks

Mudcake for the bottom layer would help support the top.

(That is the extent of my knowledge, but I d love to see a pic when it's done)

    No worries

    Pinterest is AMAZING!!

It's hard to explain what it is and how it works, but if you join you will work it out in no time, and won't regret it! (It's all free)
If you love cooking, baking, crafts and all things creative you will especially love it

    Good luck with the cake!

Haha if Pinterest is as addictive as they say, I'm better off staying away!

HotI I'm somehow the worst person ever at attaching pictures here, but I'll give it a go. I want to try attaching the others I made, but it'll likely take half an hour lol.

Mud cake sounds good, does that kind of limit what kind of icing I can use?

    1. What's the best type of cake for this? Because the bottom one will have to support to the top one.

    Butter cake or mud cake

    2. What do I use as support for the top one? I'm thinking a disc the same size as the top cake, with pillars going through the bottom cake, is that right?

The top one should be fine to sit on the bottom one but you can use skewers to secure it if you're going to be moving it or taking it in the car.

    3. What icing would be best to get it a decent white colour? My buttercream is always still kinda yellow, no matter how much I beat it. I'm totally utterly useless as fondant so that's no good, plus I need to stick the shards to it.

You can google ways to get perfectly white butter cream or you can buy a pre mix from a cake decorating ship or spotlight.

    4. How do I colour white chocolate? I can't use liquid colours, can I? And do I melt it with anything else to make it better, or just the chocolate and colour?

Use powdered colour to dye chocolate, also available from cake decorating shops.

    5. What's the best way to colour the toffee? I've never actually made toffee before so this is going to be completely new to me.

Put food dye in the water before you start cooking

Okaaaayy, that was messy and took a while lol.

But the first two are the 1 cake, it was two layered cakes, same as Iggle Piggle, and they were pink. Secod two are the Iggle Piggle cake. We all had blue faces for the rest of the day haha.

Thanks heaps for all the advice Tinks We have a baking store nearby so will check out the powdered colours.

I've realised from the photos that I did white frosting on the 1, it was fluffy frosting from the Woman's Day cake book. I reckon that would work with a mud cake.

I can't see your links dammit, I am making a Frozen one for this weekend too, and love the shards idea - I have never made them before so am off to google! Please link a photo when you are done - sounds like it will be great! I used to make all my cakes for kids from scratch but now I buy a good quality plain vanilla buttercake and use that for stability and then I make the buttercream to ice! I am doing a layered cake like a rainbow cake but all in ombre blue colours - hoping it will work!

Do a white mud cake for your bottom cake. The density will take the weight if the stuff on top. I have a great recipe. Remind me tonight and I'll share with you on fb

Thanks BG, your cakes always look great

Bugger Sunlovejoy, I think I did the pictures right! I'm not very good at linking them though so maybe not lol. The blue layers sound great, definitely link a pic when you're done! For the 'ice' shards, I'm going to practice them a couple of weeks before the party, but I gather you get a regular toffee recipe (caster sugar + water), and add the food colouring to the water first then boil. What I saw says to use a candy thermometer and get the temp to 149, then pour it onto a lined tray. When it's set you should be able to break it up. Google should help, and I'll pm you the link from Rose.

Thanks for the PM hun, just realised I thought that was your finished one not the one you are basing it on!!! Still bet it looks great!!! xoxox I am going to give the shards a go this weekend, will let you know how I go! Also thought I might do some white chocolate snowflakes, I did some butterflies a few years ago on baking paper, then in the freezer and they worked well so will give it a go with the snowflakes too! Arghhhh the things we do!

Thanks Jaycee I'm going to test BGs cake recipe and the shards on the weekend to see how it all works out. Hopefully it's all kind of easy!

Sunlovejoy the chocolate snowflakes are a great idea, looking forward to seeing how it works out!

I hadn't seen this till now! Swiss meringue icing would be great. Or seven minute icing. Tiers are easy. Use dowel and either a cake board or cardboard (covered is best) in between the cakes.

Just read the rest if it's a layer cake (as oppose to tiers) then skewers should be enough I would think depending on how high it is. If it's not high nothing would be needed.

Oh all the millions of cakes I've made first birthdays to date the absolute best every time is the cheap no name packet butter cake mix from Coles 70c each and holds like a dream. Can be frozen to make icing easier too. All round best ever cake

Rouge I'm not sure how high it will be yet, because I don't think my round cake tin is a very standard size and then I'll have the bigger one underneath. I think it'll be safer though to have a board and dowel, I can just imagine it all collapsing!
