Thrush - What should I do??

I`ve been suffering from Thrush on and off since Matthew was born in May 2005, throughout this pregnancy I think I`ve had thrush all the way through, when it starts to burn I apply yoghurt which soothes it quite well, while DTD at times I get a burning sensation during and for a little while afterwards.

So at my last OB appointment I thought it was time I should mention it and get it cleared up, the midwife did a swab. I rang last week asking to find out the results but my OB was away for the week so I rang back this week and the receptionist said if there was a problem with the swab the OB would have rang but since I`m still having the same problems might be best to go back and see him.

In the meantime we receive a bill from the OB for the swab - $81  plus his consultation fee of $55, it brings it to a total of $136. We really can`t afford to spend another $136 so I was wondering perhaps I`m best just to treat myself with the canestan cream?

I don`t understand how the results can come back negative when I certainly have a problem, with the burning I also have the itching on and off and the white creamy discharge is there occasionally.

Perhaps the thrush doesn`t go right down inside my vagina, well this is my theory as the burning is more around the vulva and just inside the entrance to the vagina (sorry if TMI) so I`m guessing if she swabbed the area right inside the vagina it wouldn`t pick up the thrush :-k

    What should I do?

    You poor thing

I'm not sure if canesten is safe during pregnancy?? Have you tried taking those inner health tablets? I find they help me. Also not wearing undies when I don't need to (eg at night)

Maybe call your OB again and insist you need to speak to him. Don't tell the secretary why. If you are worried and have already had tests you should be able to get your results and some advice on what to do about it. Luckily my OB is really good about calling me back, but he should be considering how much I am paying

Hmmm those inner health tablets might be worth a go, the thrush isn`t severe just more of a nuisance so they might do the trick of getting rid of it.

I think the canestan is safe as long as you don`t use the applicator.

It`s so hard trying to get pass the secretary, I wish my OB was like yours, like you we pay a lot of $$$$ to see him.

    :

i think there is a chemical in the canestan which is not safe during pregnancy.

id stick with the plain natural yoghurt and try inserting it inside and out just to cover all bases.

another great remedy is to sit in a bath (not too much water) and fill it with salt.

    this is awesome relief

I don't think the inner health tablets can hurt anyway. My yoga teacher was saying they're also good for the baby for some reason

How frustrating with your OBs secretary. :fuming:

    :

Thanks Danni - I didn`t realise there was a chemical in the canestan cream which isn`t good for pg women, I`m glad I`ve been hesitant with using it, I brought it weeks ago in early pregnancy and I did ask the pharmacist if it was ok in pregnancy she just said yes, no other advice given. It`s just been sitting in the cupboard ever since.

Thanks again Kylie, I`ll buy some tomorrow.

Yeah i dont know what the difference would be??? but my midwife said not to use it but canasten is ok??

Those vitamin thingos sound good though kelly, they sound better than using medicene!

Dee - Don't know if this helps you or not. My GP told me that instead of using the applicator, to just put it in the bath, let it dissolve, then sit in the bath for awhile. Not sure if that will help you or not?

Hey...during my pregnancy I had real bad trush......and OB said canesten is perfectly fine to use....he even told me to use the pessary/tablet thingy a couple of times (just not to put it too far up with applicator).....but the relief would only last a few days, and I soon learnt (unfortunately) it was something I had to put up with!!
It went away as soon as DD was born \/ \/

    goodluck!

Yup, the dreaded Thrush struck me down at about 28wks pregnant; apparently I had it really badly when I gave birth (how embarassing! ). Went to the chemist...Canestan is fine as you get a pessary & cream. The pessary is fine to insert, they just take out the applicator thingy. Apparently it can be inserted too close to the cervix with the use of the applicator and could start up something too early IYKWIM?

I believe the problem with most thrush treatments is that they are the tablet you ingest? From what my chemist was saying, these are unsafe for pregnant women.

I too used canestan in pregnancy. I talked to the pharmacist and he gave it to me. Didn't cause any probs, well it fixed the prob!!! I would also recommend eating a tub of NATURAL yoghurt daily. If you don't like it plain, add fruit or honey or something. Don't eat the flavoured yoghurts. xo

There is something STACKS better than Inner Health, the BB Personal Health Consultant Tracey Habron was explaining it to me. Apparently Inner Health has something like 14 strands of acidophilus but the one she recommends has 30 or something? I'll get her to post in here for you...
I would be interested in this too.

thrush, probiotics, essential oils and yoghurt

    Wow ladies,

Everytime I read a thread it is a serious education. Sorry to hear about the thrush - it is so irritating.

But there are a few things you can do.

This is going to be a long reply, so hang in there.

There are a few things to consider first.

You do not only treat yourself, you treat your partner!!! You help yourself with creams and he can be reinfecting you. Get him to use canasten on his penis, especially under the foreskin. There are some people who believe men are the carriers but never show symptoms. For a more natural solution, add 5 drops of lavender and 5 drops of tea tree essential oils to 30mls of sweet almond oil and apply daily, especially under the foreskin.

Thrush thrives on sugar so start removing refined sugar from the diet and eat a wholesome, healthy diet. No cold drinks, no cakes, no cookies, and cut the tea and coffee - it may be tough but do you really want to beat this??

Now, start treating thrush from the inside. The fungus Candida Albicans causes thrush. You need to get a lot of super probiotics into your body to start a biological warfare to kill off the fungus. This is the only biological warfare I support!!!

I recommend a product called In-liven that Kelly has mentioned. This is a probiotic superfood containing13 strains of probiotic to help your body. Most of the probiotics have only 1, 2 or 3 strains of probiotics. Even though these are good probiotics, you overpopulate on only these strains and they start to have a fight with other good probiotics for food and still create an imbalance. What you want is a broad spectrum strain of probiotics to create a healthy balance. In-liven is also a certified organic product meaning that the probiotics are cultivated on organic vegetable matter - I wont go into where some probiotics are cultivated!!!

Once you start to clear out the gut and balance the health, your body has a better chance to fight the fungus.

I have more information on this product that I can email if you send me an email address.

    Now, for symptomatic relief!

Yoghurt is good but it needs to be wholemilk, natural, white, unpasteurised with live cultures such as acidophilis. It is going to be hard to find but look for it. A substitute would be yoghurt with In-liven mixed into it 2 teaspoons to 100g of yoghurt. You can also add 7 drops of lavender and 7 drops of tea tree oil to 100g of the yoghurt. The fun part is getting the yoghurt up there!

I have used a large syringe I can fill easily from one end. If a penis can get up there, so can a syringe. I have used tampax applicators by sealing off the inner insert, but getting the yoghurt into the applicator was messy - you work out your best method.

For those of you who are prepared to douche, mix the above yoghurt solution with water to a thin fluid and use this, I have used a syringe here as well. Just don't squirt it in too hard.

Another douche solution is 2 tablespoons of vinegar, 3 drops of lavender, 3 drops of tea tree and 600mls of water. This can be used as a douche or soak a tampon in it and insert into the vagina in the morning, remove at night. You can add this to a hip bath with a tablespoon of rock salt.

    Hope all this helps.

Let me know if you needs clarification.
