How long were you.....???

DH and I got married 2 days shy of 16months of being together, we were engaged after about 5months and have been married for 3yrs 8months and 2 kids and very happy. We didn't live together prior to marriage.

And personally I don['t think this makes a difference. I think the dating process shows if you are compatible, like each other, havign things in common etc etc etc and the idea of living together to see if it "works out" is a bit of a fallacy because there is always going to be something that you clash on and doesn't "work out" relationships involve being commited to working things out and compromise etc so nope don't think the living together factors in there.

Personally I think it crazy being engaged after only 5months lol but it just felt right and I still think it is right

We had been together 3 years when we had our first bub, 4 years when we got married and had 2nd bub. Will be 5 years this May.

I met DH when I was 17 when his suburb moved into my cong's territory. Wasn't interested at all, not my type. Lived on next block, same church, same gym we were great friends since there wasn't any interest on my part anyway, we really got to know each other warts and all without reservation. Finally decided would give him a chance at 19, we were engaged 6 months later. Married 5 months after that. Didn't live together etc due to our religious values. Been very happily married for over 4 years now. Also, I still lived with my parents when we got married, and for that matter, his mother had moved down into the area and moved in with he and his flatmate before we started dating as well

DH and I had been strictly online friends for 9 yrs when we decided we should probably meet up - and it was just a friends meet, well I thought so anyways. During the 9 yrs I'd wondered at times if he could be the "one", but our friendship just stayed that - a great friendship. We both had other relationships during those years. The minute I laid eyes on him and he walked up to me I just knew he was the one, and he later said he came with the intention of telling me he'd fallen in love with me over the 9 years!

It took us 3 days to 'get together', I moved over here and in with him 5 months later and we were married exactly a year and 1 day later. We've been married just over 2 years now.

We have friends that have met and married very quickly, and friends that have been together for many years without marrying. It is so uniquely different for everyone!

Met DH when he was 24 and I was 23 and he was backpacking around Australia. He spent a week with me in the country town I was teaching in and then left to continue his travels down to Sydney (leaving me a list as long as his arm of addresses I could contact him through!!) Got a phonecall from him a couple of days later saying he was coming straight back to be with me!! He moved into my place straight away and from that day we were just together. That was 12 years ago.

We lived together 5 years before buying a house together and getting married (which was when we unofficially started TTCing :rolleyes:) So we have been married 7 years now and are finally having our first baby!!!

Snap :p - we were married 14 months after getting together. I was 19, he turned 24 two weeks later.
We will have been together 14 years in February, married 13 years next April.
Boy have we been through some s*** along the way.

Like Trillian said - I knew people who were together for years, got married & then pfft... all over just like that - so I figured why wait...

DH and I met when I was 16. It took him almost 2 years before be succumbed to my charms :lol: and we never spent a night apart from 3 months together. Decided not to waste rent money so moved in together after 6 months and got engaged a year later, married 6 months after that.

We have now been together for 10 years and married for 8. During that time we have emigrated twice, had 4 children, and are about to emigrate for the 3rd time. He is my rock, I could not imagine how my life would have turned out without him in it.:redface: (just don't tell him that;))

I havent read all of the responses but some of them are wonderful and dont make me feel so bad about mine, well i dont feel bad but people always commented.

I started going out with Dp when i was 15 (he was 21) he proposed to me on our 10 months anniversary so i was almost 17. We didnt make it official until i was 18 (so didnt tell my mum or my grandparents until then) we lived with each other on and off because of problems with our families (my mum kicked me out, then his mum kicked him out.... we moved back with our mums.. ahh confusing!!) but we didnt move in together properly until May this year (together almost 5 years) and our first bubba is due a month before our 6 year anniversary. We have no set date for our wedding but im not worried as we will get married when it suits us not everyone around us.

But i have to laugh at the people who say i have rushed into everything. I met him when i was 15 we moved in together properly when i was 20 and found out i was pregnant 2 weeks before my 21st.

But it was weird from the moment i met him i knew i would be with him always.

we've had ups and downs. we've had alot of people tell us it wouldnt work becuase of the age gap, plus meeting when i was so 'young' didnt help. but he's may support my main man. and i dont know what i'd be like with out him. all i know is he'd still be having 2min noodles with frozen veggies for dinner :lol:

DF and I met on my 18th birthday in may 08. Kept contact as friends (we have all the same mutual friends). At the end of 08 we started dating, and 4 months in we got pg. DF moved in with me, and 7 or so months in we got engaged. We've now been together just over a year, and are TTC, and plan on getting married late 2010 - early 2011. I personally think living together is important, although it's not what every person should have to do. If they're the one, then they're the one, no matter where two people are at in their lives.

Also just wanted to add that it's awesome reading so many lovely stories about you guys and your partners :D makes me all mushy inside lol.

Procrastinated with the wedding stuff.
Found out we were pg early Dec 2006.

All in all - Together 8years, married almost 3yrs.

There are ups and downs, but I still fall in love all over again when he says or does something totally unexpected!:loveshower:

We met in Feb 2001. Dh was living in NZ at the time but was due to move to Syd March 2001.
So, we met when I was 15 and he was 18 (moved over on his 19th Birthday)
Started dating a month later. We lived 5 hours apart so did the long distance thing until I finished my HSC at the end of 2002.
I moved to Sydney the day after finishing my HSC and lived with friends as DH at the time didn't want to live together until we were married.

About 2004 DH had a meltdown and wasn't sure if I was what he wanted so broke up with me for about 6 months. I moved back home and told him if he wanted me back he knew where I lived and had allot of work to do to win me back.

After 6 -8 months of him visiting CONSTANTLY, phone calls, apologies, etc etc, I gave into his charm (and the fact I NEVER stopped loving him) and moved back to sydney.
We moved in together at the begining of 2005 found out 2007 we were expecting number 2, got engaged when I was 5 months pg, married this year (2009) and found out 3 days before the wedding we were expecting number 2.

All in all we have now been together for just over 8 years. Yes, we have had MAJOR ups and downs and all the time i have never stopped loving him and continue to fall more and more in love each day (even if he can't clean the bathroom properly LOL) I still continue to learn more about him and him about me, i don't think that will ever change and that is why I love being with him.

Was with xBF for 1.5 years, got engaged, post poned the wedding, broke up after being engaged for 1.5 years.

Was with DH for 5 months, got engaged, got married 6 months later. We were married within 13 months of hooking up. Lived together for 1 month before we got married (unofficially). About to celebrate our 5 year anniversary in Jan. Tonight (NYE) was our 6th anniverasary together

Dh and I met Jan 14, started courting March 11, got engaged April 5 and got married August 4, all in the same year. Needless to say, our parents weren't impressed with the timing, but both sets have now said we make a good couple :)

I agree about the milestones different couples have to go through. I attempted suicide not long after we were married, DH was in a truck accident the day before our engagement party, we were so broke for our first year of marriage....then we've had to deal with infertility as well as my recurring depression and anxiety - my mum said to me recently that she was surprised DH not only stayed, but coped so well when I hit bottom. She had doubts about him before that, but now they're gone :)

We have been together for 7 years in two days. We moved in together after 8 weeks (spent every night together after 1 week), got engaged 15 months later, married when together for 2 1/2 years and are still madly in love with each other. I still get that feeling in my stomach when I see him.

DH and I were together about 2 years before we got engaged and then we married 2 years later. This year will be our 10th wedding anniversary. Of course it has not been without our dramas, whilst DH thinks we have been fine all the time, I have almost ended it numerous times.

We moved into together after about a year together, that was mainly due to us moving interstate. I think if we had stayed in Tas we would have lived separately for a bit longer. I was fine with the arrangement that we had, we spent most nights together splitting the time between our places.

DH and I have been married nearly 7 years, but together for almost 18 years. We got together when we were 16, and moved in together when we were 19.

after heaps of knock backs from me i finally got the guilts and my mu made me ask him out "just for drinks " as id been so rude to him ( didnt think he was my type)

XF - Got together Aug 2002, he proposed sometime in the 2nd half of 2003 - we never set a date for the wedding and everyone asked us when we were planning.. Well, for some reason, in my bones, I just couldn't set a date or plan anything.. We broke up so many times during the relationship that I think that's what did it. We broke up for good Dec 2005.

DH - Started talking online Feb 2006. I didn't like him at first and thought he was one of those people that was just trying to chat me up (we met on MySpace when that was the big thing) because of the private message he'd sent (still have it to this day!) I decided to ignore his message because of the above reason but kinda talked to him once every few days, not often though.. It wasn't till April 2006 (my birthday) that I talked to him more - I remember grilling him as to why he didn't say happy birthday to me.
Anyways, first met up in May 2006 (it was a couple weeks after my 21st birthday) and had a crush on him from the beginning
Kept meeting up during school holidays, though he went away for one of them - the first lot (hence the reason for him not wishing me a happy birthday)
Started meeting up quite a bit.
August 22nd 2006, he asked me to be his girlfriend
Moved in Dec 2006 to my (now) ILs house
BFP on June 27th 2007, lost the bub June 29th 2007
Proposed July 29th 2007
Got married January 10th 2009 - and just bout the celebrate our first anniversary! :D

So, we've been together a total of 3 and a half yrs :)

DH and I have been together since March 2002...engaged June 2007, had DD November 2007 and married October 2008.

So all up we were together 6.5 years before we got married, and been married now for just over a year - 8 years together coming up!

ETA: Having said that though, we were practically living together within 6 months and physically living together within 12 months...I knew I would spend the rest of my life with him in weeks, and our relationship has morphed so many times now I can barely keep up lol So wish your friends joy and happiness and let them work out the logistics ;)

DH and I met online (ironically both of us had decided to give dating in general one last and final chance!) in Nov 07... first date Nov 26th 07, I moved in March 08, found out I was preg with DS April 8th 08, got engaged 3 weeks later, bought our first house September 12th 08, DS was born Dec 23rd 08... and we just got married on Jan 16th 09... so we've almost hit 26 months together now :) We only had a $2,000 wedding too, beach weddings rock!

DH and I will have been together for 12 years this May. We met when I was 17 & he was 20. Moved in together after 1 and a half years, bought a house together at 4 years, got engaged at our house warning a few months later (also was my 22nd birthday by then), then married 5 months later- so almost been together 5 years. Started trying for children 2 years later...finally had our first son arrived a few weeks after our 10year together anniversary (and a couple of months after our 5 year wedding anniversary), next baby due any week/day now. And we're just as happy together today as when we first meet.

I had a friend who eloped & bought a house after 6months together- they broke up after 2years. But then I've got another friend who married her DH (much to everyones dislike) after 6 weeks and there somewhere in the 30 year mark being married.

So I guess it doesn't really matter how long you are together for before getting married. If its meant to be its meant to be. But it probably saves alot of money (and heartache) to 'try before you buy'.

DH and I had known each other for years but we didn't get together for about 3 years I think. Then we were together, our best surprise Bethany was concived and we had her it was about 12 mths after we got together he proposed (while we were driving to a funeral mind u, but thats another story) 9 mths later we were married. We r almost 4 years into our marriage now and doing great
