To a degree, I'd agree with you - but I personally believe that anyone having a very strict dress code is being somewhat disrespectful to their guests. I understand that the bride (and perhaps the groom) have this image in their head of what they want, but there are some expectations that are just going too far. yup, jeans at a formal wedding, not on, but to expect suit and tie - i dunno - it just seems to be a very high expectation on your guests. they either want you there to celebrate, as the person you are, or they want drones all dressed the same, in which case they should hire people. for some people, wearing certain clothes is just not appropriate - either because it makes them exceptionally uncomfortable or because it's financially not possible. I would likely not go to a wedding where it was essentially demanded that DH had to wear a suit - partially, because i don't feel he should be uncomfortable, and partially because I wouldn't go and spend the money on a suit for a one off wear. And, given DH is a bigger guy, it's definitely not a cheap buy, esp out here - it would likely involve trips to Melbourne area plus the expense of the suit - and to be entirely honest, i wouldn't do that even for family, let alone friends. And that's not just related to us having minimal disposable income at the moment - even when DH was working away and earning 3 times what i am now, we wouldn't have done it - it's just not worth it. there is nothing in my wardrobe (apart from my own wedding gown) that has been purchased to wear as a one off for an "occassion" - when i'm looking at things, i'm always looking at whether it is something i'd wear again at a later time. i don't own a ****tail dress (for example - actually, ANY dresses) and i wouldn't go and buy one to attend a wedding because i know i'd never wear it again and i certainly wouldn't be comfortable, nor would i enjoy myself due to that discomfort. skirt and dress top i could do, but dress, nope. and if someone wanted me at their wedding, they'd have to take me as i am or not have me there at all
