Ahh, cheers for that one, Onyx - the who/whom thing screws me up a bit, it's the only 'rule' I'm not 99% confident using on a regular basis.

I had a sense of when I should have used "whom" but wasn't 100% certain... now I "get" it.
So should we say "whom amongst us is really good at spelling?" or "who amongst us..."? I figure "whom" because you can't substitute a s/he.

Fantastic thread! I dont mind the odd mistake, I'm sure I make plenty, but the bigger ones that are made ALL the time really annoy me.
The most annoying one at the moment, to me, is "his" and "he's". I just want to scream at people sometimes! THEY ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE! Lol

His - "the chocolate is his"
He's - abbrev. "he is". "He's eating the chocolate cake"
Ones I do get confused with and have to "think" about a lot are "effect" and "affect" so if anyone's got a simple mnemonic for me I'd appreciate it :)
I do have to confess, when I see items written using "txtspeak" in emails etc, I physically find it near impossible to read.

DH says it all the time & it drives me BATTY, I seriously hate it.
I use this rule... but I rarely say whom, because as you said Bath... it's not common usage & some people tend to look at you strangely :lol::
I say 'who' ... because you would say 'he' is good at spelling, not 'him is good at spelling'

great thread. I am anal with how I use the above words. What I find hilarious is grammar. The other day someone was saying they're due out of hossie soon and her husband replies "Thank God I'm out of jocks" rather than "Thank god. I'm out of jocks" I read it as he was happy to be freeballing rather than he was out of clean underwear. :lol: it's amazing how something so snall can make a difference to the situation :p
Not 100% sure if I'm right or how to explain... but I think that the effects of the rain can be seen in how it affects my hair... oh that's so bad, I will have to think of another :redface: but yeah, something like that. ITMS.:
ETA - Ok I had to look it up. It's a bit confusing, but usually affect is a verb & effect is a noun. There are exceptions but apparently they are rare.
No wonder English is supposed to be one of the hardest languages to learn....

AFFECT is a VERB that means "to cause a change in" or "to influence." Here's an example of its correct use:
Insulting an alligator before you cross stream may AFFECT your health.
EFFECT, however, may be either a NOUN or a VERB, and this, very likely, contributes to even more confusion.
EFFECT used as a NOUN means "result" and here's an example of its correct use:
Passing the time of day with your family will have a good EFFECT on your relationship with them.
And, finally, EFFECT is used as a VERB when it means "to bring about" or "to accomplish".
Actually, this use isn't as prevalent today as the other two uses, but we still see and hear it at times. Notice the correct use here:
Never drowning in his own sweat EFFECTS a negative opinion from Tom's boss that he's too lazy to work.

Thought of another one I've seen a lot of lately; "seems" being used in place of "since", I don't think I've seen in used the other way around. Someone else will have to help with the definitions, I'm not sure how to describe either of them.

Just another perspective and something to ponder, whilst I agree with everything that has been mentioned here.
I hope that we still continue to speak as humans on BellyBelly. Not as Literature Professors :rofl:. A forum is meant to be "human" which includes colloquialisms and abbreviations in speech (which also leads to creative spelling), no different to how you would talk in person. Now I love you all dearly but I know for a fact that some of you do NOT speak so eloquently in person. So I do think picking on people for how their spelling/grammar/punctuation is on a social media platform (especially such a personal one) is pointless because it is not meant to be so sterile and perfect it is supposed to be natural and organic. It is almost like picking on someone for their accent. Type as you talk, not as you wish others to perceive you. But I do love a good conversation about the english language too ;)
Also I think it's important to point out that most people do make typos from time to time and some people as Maz mentioned have other issues that relate to why they type the way they do.
uh oh! I find that I type alot a lot! I am aware that it's two words... but I get lazy on forums and don't go back to change it... a lot like leaving "I" as in "i am" as a lower case. Our keyboards are stuffed in this house! Plus I try to type as fast as I'm thinking and I make mistakes! So I forgive "alot".
ETA: I hope people forgive my use of "kinda" and "dunno" too... I often wonder if that bugs people. I am by nature a fast talker and I probably do actually say "kinda" IRL.
ETA: Good point Rouge! I started this thread not to judge but to just offer some info in case people genuinely don't know the difference and would like to :) It seems that most replies are about people fine-tuning their spelling/grammar so hopefully it's not worrying people overly. I'm learning a thing or two too!
I don't see spelling mistakes from other people as my mother and younger sister are dyslexic. i just like using correct english personally. i just laugh at grammar when it makes a completely innocent sentence seem inapropriate (see above). Unless someone asks or i need them to clarify exactly what they mean I won't tell them they have made an error.:
I love this thread!! I find a lot of what has been said annoying too!
Also, I don't think people are trying to pick on anyone for spelling or grammatical errors. Everyone makes them! Nor do I think anyone is trying to offend anyone. I hope the thread will be taken in the light which I see it, a bit of a learning tool, as well as a place where we can admit our idiosyncrasies and little personal quirks!
