Mel - never heard of the Desiderata, but am now looking into it as I really love that quote!
My favourite is 'Adversity does not build character, but reveals it'.
Its a beautiful poem. All of it has made me stop and think for a while. For anyone interested - here's a link Desiderata:

"If not now, then when?" - makes me stop procrastinating and do things, also makes me think about opportunities and making the most of them.

It's great isn't it Emma? I also love "Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune" because it reminds me that I am strong enough to deal with whatever the universe throws at me. And nothing is too difficult or too big for me to overcome :D

Another song quote "If you're lonely, take a drink, there are better things to think." from Augie March, a song on Sunset Studies but I forget which. If I'm realy anxious about an event, I write that on a bit of paper and keep it in my handbag.
And form my yoga teacher, a whole bunch of gems, best said with his hilarious accent, but my favourite is "I am strong like a big oak tree, and nothing can bring me down"

I have used this in so many situations.
"The personal is political"
That is, what you do in your personal life has a political impact. For example, when I married I kept my maiden name and my children have my surname, not my husbands. Breastfeeding in public is a personal and a political act. Not allowing discrimination to go unchecked is a personal decision but a political one also.
