Babies Born August 2007 #2

Claire - I totally understand about the sleep. Jensens like that too occasionally. Lately he's been waking for his feeds and deciding its play time! I just look at him and force myself to think... he's only little once.. and I'll never have kids again. But when morning comes, that last thought goes right out the window! lol Wow he's so big! Jensen is 6wks (by day, not date) and is 55cm, 4.9kg and 37cm head circ... Every says he's so tiny, I don't think so... but hearing about everyones kiddies, he does seem small. We met a 7wk old today and she was sooo much bigger than him. The doctor and health nurse didn't have a problem with his size, so maybe theres not... I'm gonna have to ask at our next appt. Jensen also sleeps for about 4-5hrs first up at night, then wakes every 2 - 2.5hrs. Can almost set my watch by it!

Kirst - How are you feeling with giving up expressing feeding? Still can't believe everyones baby is moving up to 00's. We ended up using the baby bonus to keep us going while I'm off work. I worked it out to be financially sustained for 5 mths. Only thing I didn't factor was groceries. whoops! Oh well, what little I get from Centrelink can go towards that!

Neuri - Lol no no not 120ml from one side - but the right side always contributes the most to it! Round about 90ml just that side alone.

Well, I got the washing done today. Mind you I was over at Andrews parents place, and had other ppl to entertain my lil monster. Like I was saying to Claire, Jensen has just started this habit where he wakes for his midnight feed and is awake for like the next hour! Then, coz he's been awake for an hour,he'll have a lil snack and go back to sleep himself for another 2 hrs then do it all again. I'm so tired from it. There was a photograph stall in the shopping centre, with a $3.95 entry fee for baby competition. You get a free photo with it too. Jensen was asleep, so he was a lil more pliable. And oh so cute! Even the photographer ladies thought so too! This is where we met the 7wk old girl. Compared to her, he WAS tiny. Depending on how I'm feeling during the day, at different times, I'm either ok about it, or I worry that I'm not doing anything right. ATM - I'm so so. If I wasn't doing anything right, I'm sure I'd see something other than his size - right? Every evening from 4, Jensen gets edgy. He doesn't want to be in my room, or the office but somewhere where I'm walking round and he can see different things. I think he just likes a different scenery.

Someone was saying something about getting their babies to sleep well at night? I can't get Jensen to sleep long at night, but I do know that if I bath him between 6-7:30 (with J & J baby bedtime bath), followed by J&J bedtime bath lotion to moisturise and relax.. he feeds really well and sleeps really soundly.

This might sound a really weird question -:redface: Has your partner tasted your breastmilk? From the breast? What did they think?

Better be off... got a big day tomorrow. Gotta visit a friend for his birthday early, then one of Andrews friends who's dying to finally meet our baby (his 2nd is on the way) and then we're off to a 2nd birthday - it takes about 1.5hrs to get there, and it starts at 11! Before all that, I actually have to make my self look a lil decent!

Rhiannon, funny you should say about the J&J baby bedtime products. Cameron had a bath this evening with the bubbles and I massaged him using the moisturiser. It only took us 10 minutes to settle him to sleep (has been taking upwards of an hour) and he is sound asleep now!!

I have tried my breastmilk (curiosity got the better of me) and was pleasantly suprised, it was nice and sweet but a bit watery. Hubby thought I was being revolting and he refuses to try it. It made me think about why people are so appalled about trying milk that is specifically designed for and produced by humans.

I have been reading about "dream feeding" as had seen people talking about it but did not really understand what it was. Now I know I am thinking of giving it a try tonight if I can catch it before Cameron decides to wake for a feed. Does anyone here do it, and if so how successful is it in prolonging the sleep period over night??

Oh...the man has just woken up :( best go and settle him.

Rhianon - as far as giving up the boob thing, I'm fine. I aimed for 12 weeks of breastmilk, but she'll keep getting it until 10 weeks, just like Ardyn. I have to do what's best for all of us as a family, and at the moment I am feeling more stressed trying to get her the breastmilk, and I tend to push my stress onto others, so then DH is stressed and the kids are stressed....etc. etc. She'll be fine, and so will I. Thanks for asking though.

Well Bailey got her first formula feed tonight before she went to bed, and we haven't heard a peep from her. We usually get some grizzles between 7:00 and 8:30, but we've had nothing. I think that it may have done the trick. She slept really well during hte day too. It could have something to do with mummy being less stressed because she had daddy home for support (oh, and that he let me sleep in this morning).

Sehra, no time like the present for the men to get a hold on this looking after bubs business. I figure the sooner nathan starts the quicker he'll learn. Did you express for hubby to feed her. one thing nathan does is he screws the top of the bottle on too tight (boy tightness like when they do it for a bottle in the fridge, making it impossible to undo) anywho by putting the top of the bottle on too tight it makes it harder to suck and they get wind worse. and I got 7 hours of sleep. I think that's good. I hope the check up goes well.


Claire sounds like you have a basketballer on your hands there. Lol you won't be able to hide many things on the top shelf away from him for long. With sleep I have just been lucky. Xavier started telling me when he was tired and wanted to sleep so I made sure he got what he wanted. eventually I guess he is just slowly getting used to longer and longer sleeps.

Sara, this might make you laugh. It seems danielle and I did a little switch a roo. Xavier was due to arrive on the 27th of july yet arrived on the 3rd of august. She stole my dues date :lol:


Rhiannon, a few weeks ago xavier had a f=very similar sleeping pattern to what you described for jensen. He has been increasing it gradually though. I'm sure you will find jensen will do the same.

krist, yay on the sleep in, that's fantastic. I'm glad that you are happy with how everything is going and your family is happy and healthy too.

Trying breastmilk? I have to say it weirds me out more than anything. claire your right we shouldn't be appauled by it because it is made for us and well bubs dont complain. I still find it a little freaky that I produce milk :lol:

Well we had a pretty good day today. decided to get some infants friend gave him a little with his lunch time feed and got a huge burp, and then had better burps than usual for all his feeds until he went to bed. So I think he just needed one really good burp to clear things out.
I also bought today a medicine dispenser that is a dummy and bubs sucks on it. I'm wondering if anyone has ever used these? I thought it might be handy because Xavier might be less likley to send the medicine back my way if he was feeling a bit chucky iykwim

Night, I'm buggerd - oo did you all know that k-mart have their terry suits(like wondersuits) on special for under $5 this week. They are pretty good still for something that will be peed, pooed and spewed on.

Oh Kirsten, hope ur feeling more upbeat. We were lucky with our mums group (Holly's) coz we all get along so well, i've heard others from other mums groups having issues where some talk behind others backs etc, I hope urs isnt like that. Dont b silly, theyre prob feeling the same way, i felt alot bigger than most in my mums group too, it can take months to loose it all, hang in there, they're prob a really nice bunch of ladies. It doesnt matter if uve got the biggest or the smallest baby, so long as they're healthy :) Holly was always the smallest in mums group, theres a few pics in my www from when she was under 6mths & shows shes smaller, but by gees after the formula, she is now the biggest girl in the group & as big as some of the boys in the group, hehe. I only wear foundation unless going out, but other mums in our group had all the nice makeup on.

Wow Sehra, that'd b a pain having to sit there so long. Speaking of hair, i need my regrowth done too, sux having greys. I found my first few grey hairs at 21yo, no thnx to my dad.
Ur being too hard on urself, dont b silly, bubs dont hold a grudge. Lanah has done that too, mainly whilst im changing her or have just put her down, they'll let u know if theyre uncomfy. Both Holly & Lanah have woken up b4 crying coz theyve vomitted & r lying in it & i wonder how long theyve been lying in it b4 they cried to let me know.

Claire hope ur resting up. Good wrap on the mirena, its sounding like a really good option to me too. No real secret, both bubs just started doing it by themselves, some do & some dont. When my obgyn asked how bub was sleeping & i said great sleepin thru he said i dont know how u get them to do that, hehe.

Hehe Bec, yeah they have to check testes to c if they've descended & think also to make sure no hernia's.
Oh & as for the dummy, they work like a charm for some bubs, but others wont have a bar of them (like Lanah & Holly), but if they do like the dummy, u can have problems with waking thru the night crying coz dummy fell out, just some info i got from other mums in my mums group. ;)

Wow Sara, so they've moved interstate just like that? Good on 'em. Hmm, could come in handy as a babysitter too, hehe.
Oh & there's also about the same amount of us that were in the due in late Aug thread too.

Rhiannon, i'm sure ur doin fine. But if ur worried, just get him weighed weekly at ur CHC or chemist, that's what we did with our 1st. Also u can check against the growth charts in ur blue book. Holly was around the 15-20% for weight until I put her on formula at 6mths, then she just filled out, hehe.

Ali, PMSL at the nut freezone comment. WTG on Emma's weight gain, thats fantastic. Hope u get out early Sat for the long wkend. A double REVERSABLE pram, that is cool. OMG that is a bargain, what brand is it, ive heard Phil & Ted prams are very pricey, is it one of them?

WTG Rhiannon on getting back to pre-preg weight, I still have 7.5kg to go, havent lost any in last 3-4wks but havent really been trying, doh. & then have another 2kg to get back to pre-Holly weight & another 3kg to get back to pre-wedding weight. So id ideally like to loose 12.5kg, but i sooo procrastinate about trying to loose it. I really want to loose at least some by time we go on hols with whole mums group (10 or 11 families) end Nov.

Sara, from my understanding, the needles are due at 2mths (calendar months, so by date, eg: 14th of mth) not 8wks (by day). Anyhow it doesnt have to be entirely accurate (eg: on the 14th) but close to the date. :)

WE R HOME!!!!!!!!! got discharged yesterday early arvo.

Shell, The pram is a Bertini steerable collection. Emmaljunga also make 1 called the cerox. it doesn't fit thru our front door unfolded tho! we just take the kids inside then worry bout the pram. Sarah is really gentle with Emma so we dont have problems with attacking thankfully. the woman i got it from had a toddler that attacked her newborn.

Re BM, DH reckons it's buttery / sweet. all gone now tho! Em is really different now that she's eating enough. she goes 3 hrs then 5 hrs @ night, thankfully the 5 hrs is the last part! We put her in bed awake so she doesn't think we have deserted her when she wakes. we have never settled her off to sleep but always allowed her to do it herself, we dont want the problems we had with Sarah!

Kim, b very careful with not contracepting. u dont want 2 b reading a positive tester with a little bub on ur lap like I did. having a bub can iron out some fertility probs, even male 1's.

Emma will b weighed again 2morrow or wednesday. doubt it will b 2morrow coz of the public holiday but :dunno:. going 2 fun footy match btw old crows n port players 4 charity 2morrow. They call it the slowdown n we go every year. Lleyton Hewitt n Guy Sebastian n a few other celebs play n they have lots of family stuff. it supports children's hospitals etc.

Welcome kim, I too have washers and towels and all sorts of things hanging around, I'm just too slow. I don't pay enough attention :lol:

Shell I am trying to avoid the dummy, but he just wants something to suck on and if I have to choose boob or dummy I'm choosing dummy because he chucks if he eats too much. I have been trying if he spits the dummy and grizzles and is half asleep to just move the dummy out of the way and pat/stroke and shush. My nieces are dummy Dependant and I don't want that.

Alison, yay on being discharged that's fantastic. Glad to hear things are going so well now. You do have a good girl if she goes down without a fuss though. I remember our first night home, we tried to put xavier in his cot and he was like no way man and screamed. He eventually went in a few hours later.

Xavier had his first time away from me yesterday. I only got a little teary. We went to the movies and he spent a couple of hours with Gran. thankfully he was a good boy and is welcome back.

Claire - Dream feeding - I used to do that when Jensen was a lot smaller and we had our nights worked into 2hour shifts. I woke before he did, anticipating it, fed him and put him back to bed and he was none the wiser.

Rebecca - I'd have to find short sleeved, short legged suits now. I don't know about every one else, but it's been getting hot here lately. Not really using the wondersuits anymore. I dont have washer beside the change table, but prolly should, as man - that boy can pee far!

Kim - Welcome to you and Hayden! DTD - no we did before 6wks, roundabout the 4th week. Its different than before, prolly from the stitches but (TMI) its better now!

Sara - Your cousin moving up - potential babysitter? :)

Shell - Lucky you with your girls not using a dummy. Ours is a lifesaver, and is only used to settle and maybe fall asleep. Once hes quiet enoug, or asleep enough, I try and take it out. However, if he doent want it, he'll spit it as far as he can! I didn't want to use one coz I dont want a dummy dependant child. However, had i not used one (started day 3):redface:, I would have lost it. There was no sleeping when we were in hospital, by either of us. My sister has weened her 11mth off his dummy about a mth ago, so when the time comes, I'll just ask for pointers. :rolleyes:

Ali - Welcome home! Great to hear Emma is doing better! Hope you had fun at the charity event!

That sleep pattern I mentioned is getting worse! Last night was terrible! With being sick too (I have a headcold :( ) it wasn't easy. Jensen slept last night from maybe 7:45 to 10:30 - then it started. I fed him, early, then tried to put him back to bed to which he screamed. So i tried to rock him to sleep and his eyes were shut, so back we went. Woke himself up with the startle reflex when I put him down. Tried again - this time wrapped up, woke coz he couldn't get his arms out. This time he was happy just to look around. 1230, 1, 1:45, 2:15, 3:30, 4:30 He woke up. It took about 10 mins to make sure he was asleep, or at least on his way. He fed at most waking times. At 3:30 Andrew had him, and kept him quiet for a few mins. He was happy just to look around and smile and gurgle at me. At 4:30 enough was enough, so i got him to sleep - that took an hour, arranged a pillow between our pillows, set him down and cuddled him face to face, and he was right. He's asleep there now, and I'm not far off it! Andrew was great about it all last night. He can get a lil cranky if he wakes up at night. He woke round 7:30 for a few mins then slept til 12:30. Hes back asleep now.

Jensens 2mth needles will be on the 18th, 2 calender mths. Not looking forward to it. Do you think its a good idea to hold off feeding til after theyre done, so I can calm him with it? They say to do that for 2hrs before his circumcision, so after the procedure, I can calm him with it. EEEK! Thats next Monday.

Oh! We had to borrow one of my sisters cars, as ours overheated. :wall: We were 1.5hrs from home, just before going to the 2yo's party. Andrew was p!ssed. We have a 1995 Range Rover. The overheating can be 1 of 2 things. Either its just the head gaskets or we've cracked the cylinder heads. Option 1 is more preferable, or something cheaper & easier to be fixed would be even better. Option 1 is a $5000 job, whereas Option 2 is a $10,000 job. Damn luxury 4WD. Either way, its a 3wk job.

Better go and hang some washing and do some shopping! Hope your all well.

A quick one, and I'll do personals later. Today has, thus far, been divided into Good/Bad.
Good: I got a decent sleep and woke at 6.20am, as did Laura.

Bad: She resolutely refused to go back to sleep after being fed, preferring instead to KEEP FEEDING dammit.

Good: She dropped off and I got into the shower.

Bad: Then she woke up, and panicked (I think) and I was standing in the loungeroom wearing slippers and a baby and nothing else. And dripping.

Good: We eventually made it into clothes and out the door and into the car, to visit my old work.

Bad: We were running late.

Good: We were only 5 minutes late, thanks to many green lights.

Bad: I wasn't supposed to visit until tomorrow! I am such a dill.

Good: They were delighted to see us anyway, and I'm going back tomorrow so that I can see the people who don't work today. And there will be cake. ;)

Bad: it isn't like I need cake.

Good: Laura had another first while we were there!

Bad: it was her first huge vomit. Ye gods. I didn't know her little tummy could hold that much.

Good: it was me holding her when that happened, rather than any of my colleagues.

Bad: see above.

Good: We made it back home and through a bath (both of us) and into her bassinette to sleep (her) and I've got a bit of housework done, and a few bills paid, and the car booked in for an urgently needed service.

Bec- i don't express. I fed Ela before i left and told DH to make up some formula if she gets hungry. By the time i got home mt breasts were ready to pop, so Ela had a very good feed but had some wibd probs which made her very unsettled but once she slept she did well. My hair looks great, people want to touch it and ask me if its extensions!

For those who haven't tried Infants Friend - i recommend it too. I give it to Ela before her last 2 feeds for the day and she seems o.k in the wind dept. Highly recommended. She doesnt mind the taste now.

Ali- great to hear that Emma is doing well and that you are both at home. Don't blame you for missing her. I miss Ela when i leave her with mum or hubby for a few hours. Cuddle her and kiss her a lot to make up for lost time!

Ela's needles are due today! There's an evening council session on tomorrow night, i shall take her to that. Geez, its tough to let someone inflict pain on your bub but its gotta be done.

Rhiannon - if you don't mind me asking, why will you get Jensen circumcised? For health reasons or religious beliefs? Just curious. Good luck for next week. Bugger about the car though :doh:

Kirst - my boobies were drying up at one stage and was topping Ela up with formula. I breast fed Ela a few more feeds than normal per day for a few days and my BM came back with a vengenance. I don't top her up during the day any longer only at her last feed before her night sleep as she liked having a full belly. Good luck!

Claire - geez you have a mighty big boy on your hands! Try putting Cameron on a routine before bed. Ela has a feed at about 5pm, then a little nap. She wakes and i give her a bath at about 7-7.15pm, massage her then feed her till she has a full belly. She is usually knackered after her feed, i wrap her up and rock her a little and she's asleep by 8.45-9pm max. Devrim was a real terror and nothing worked to get him to sleep! He still hates sleeping today and he's 5! Some kids aren't interested in sleep and are more active. Good luck, but the routine thing with Ela works wonders.

On Sat. night we had friends over about 15 of them! Ela was very unsettled with the noise and had trouble sleeping as her routine was out of wack. She finally slept around 11.30pm, woke at 6am for a feed then slept from 7am till 12pm! It was the best sleep i had in ages. Last night she slept from 8.30pm till 9.45am this morning, with an hour of feeding and changing at 4am. I prayed to God when i was pregnant to give me a child who would sleep as my son was a horrific sleeper and my prayers were answered. She definitely knows the difference b/w day and night now.

Kirsten - LOL :cryinglaugh: What a day! Hey, we all need cake!

Rhiannon: Sorry to hear that Jensen has been keeping you up all night...hopefully it is just a growth spurt and he will settle down soon.
Have you tried the "Sounds for silence"CD? it is a CD of various samples of white noise. It is not the best thing for grown-ups to listen to, but it works wonders (most of the time) to help settle Cameron
Also hope you feel better soon.

Ali: pleased to hear that Emma is out of hospital and doing well, it must have been a very stressful time for you.

We have had an OK day today. Cameron and I went shopping, and obviously he kicked off just as I was trying on all my selected clothes!! but I managed to get what I wanted without abandoning the shopping trip:)
He screamed and screamed in the car on the way home, it was horrible not being able to do anything to settle him. He was as red as a beetroot when I got home and he had tears in his eyes (made me feel like "evil mum")
I was not able to get an afternoon nap today because he wouldn't settle in his cot, only on me or in his rainforest swing. Oh well, who needs sleep anyway!
He is having 4 hour gaps between feeds today, I hope it continues through the evening and night!
Oh and my attempt at dreamfeeding was a disaster, it was a challenge to get him to take the nipple, then he fed for about 5 minutes and lost interest.

Rhiannon, it won't be long before we have to ditch wondersuits as Xavier is a very warm baby. But for the moment they are his jamies.
Bugger on the car. Sorry you had such a hard night. As you mentioned it's getting hot there perhaps Jensen is hot and isn't comfortable enough sleeping?? maybe check the temp in his room/bed and you could wrap him in muslin instead of flannel and use some cooler suits? Just a thought.

Kristen, all I can say is go to bed and rest up for tomorrow. I took xavier into work the other day and he spewed on a co-worker, I'm over it. But they never made me cake, I'll have to mention that!!

Claire, nice to go shopping isn't it, not so nice when it doesn't fit in with bubs plans. I feel bad when I can't console xavier in the car. Clair I have only once accidentally dream fed xavier. it was about 15 mins before he normally wakes up, he was starting to stir and the only reason I did it was that my boobs where rock hard and leaking everywhere I had to or they were going to explode!!

Em got weighed again this morning, up 80g. v good n mw was happy. couldn't get CYH as public holiday, der. my friend had a baby girl this morning! 8lb15!!! this friend is quite petite too! they named her Georgia. I cant believe she's heavier than Emma is now!

Bit annoyed that i have to watch what i eat more now as i am not bf but now i have good pram have been walking every day, well yesterday n today... i promise to do it tomorrow too! also not looking forward to AF coz bf makes it stay away longer.

Slowdown was funny, 1 of the celebs got the umpire to show him how to kick on the angle he was on, and he got the goal! they need to put it bac to adelaide oval next year as aami stadium is not good with prams n babies, they dont even have change tables! Guy Sebastian didn't even get a touch! Lleyton hewitt hasn't played since marrying Bec Cartwright. btw their little girl looks heaps like Sarah!

Re Dummies, we took the dummy away in 1 night with Sarah as she had a blankie that she used as more of a comfort than the dummy. We will get rid of Emma's dummy b4 she turns 1 and after her fixation with her hands is gone. I can't stand seeing kids suck their thumbs!

Re immunisations, yea having a feed afterwards will calm them down, even if they r not due for 1 they will take a little snack usually. Panadol is good too.

Re Dreamfeeds, Em needs to be awake or she wont suck, her main prob with weight, but thankfully she will settle down again straight away.

Re DTD (i know tmi but ull get over it) would have been sooner if not in hossy but managed to get proper DTD last night. No interruptions! trust me thats hard with 2 under 18 mnths!

Re wrapping, Sarah hated being wrapped. the cyh nurse told me that all babies love being wrapped, then i showed her! Em loves it tho. I use Huge muslin squares as cant wrap tightly enough with anything smaller. these r pretty much half a cot sheet! 120mm by 120mm. have 2 get sum 4 my sister... gotta write a list

we aren't having probs with wind as much now coz 1) we burp her multiple times thru the feed, 2) she doesn't get as much air in with the narrow necked bottles as she would with breast or wide neck bottles, 3) when she does have wind we use brauer colic relief.

Re peeing, yes girls do it too, they just don't get enough distance usually n end up getting their clothes. i always have the new nappy underneath n get the old one out of the way asap. she is usually only uncovered for up to 30 secs while i wipe her.

Been MIA a bit in here lately. I've got a cousin from Adelaide staying with us at the moment. Her and her b/f moved up here and needed somewhere to stay until they got jobs and a place to live. So i have been helping them out with job searching etc etc.

Kim my hubby laughed when I got all teary, and between the tears I was laughing also as it feels kind of foolish. But I also felt it necessary to point out that it's different for me and that I haven't been away from him since he was born, and even before that. He technically had not left me in about 11 months iykwim

Alison, it's really great to hear things are improving. Xavier hates being wrapped as well, he punches his way out of the wrap. We have heaps of muslin for when the weather heats up, but I doubt they will be used for anything other than shade :lol:

Well we had immunisations today. a little bit of screaming but whipped out the boobs and all was good. I have to admit I made him wait for his feed till after them. It meant the liquid went down better. (there is a liquid for rotovirus sp) he guzzled that down he was so hungry, none of it came back up.

it's been 4 hours since them and nothing too drastic has happened no temp yet, fingers crossed he doesn't get one.

Oh well better go and do some things

bec, when sarah had her 2mnth shots she was 1st appt of the day n didn't get a temp till 10hrs later. b careful n make sure u have panadol in ur nappy bag.

Ela had her 8 week weigh in today. She put on 1kg in a month. She is now 5.5kg. The MCHN was quite impressed! Ela is very good on her tummy and she holds her head up and looks around. The MCHN was really impressed at that too. She said that i ditch the night formula top up as she doesn't need it (as in weight wise) so i'm going to give that a try tonight.

3 hours to go fo her to receive her needles. I was going to give Ela some Panadol prior to the shots, in hope that they will start working by the time she gets the shots. Does everybody's council offer the Rota Teq vaccination? I saw it that infants under 4 months will receive 1 of 3 shots today at the MCH Centre. It protects against diarrohea.

This morning i had real trouble BF Ela (and still am), the milk is not coming out, if that makes sense??? My bb were bulging after 6 hours sleep and once she woke, she couldn't get the milk to come out. I had to express and then give it to her in a bottle. I've had two feeds since then and its the same. She gets cranky when sucking and my bbs are still quite firm, as there is milk in there. I don't know what to do. It's as if she has forgotten how to suck. The LC at the MCH centre said that it could be b/c my bb were too full ?? I don't know. If i have to express, i will ditch BF altogether.

It seems that Cameron is well and truly in the midst of the week 6 growth spurt and it is a nightmare.
The day started off well, and we went to our local ABA meeting. He got quite grizzly there, but I managed to settle him and it was ok. Get in the car to go home and he starts crying...and well basically if he has not been feeding then he has been crying and in total I think he has had 2-3 hours sleep all day.
He has been feeding lots too and feeding for ages.
Hubby has finally managed to get him to sleep (no crying for 5 minutes now) but I am painfully aware that he is going to want to be fed soon and will be waking up again!
How long does this growth spurt behaviour last? is it for a whole week, or less or more????

Oh I spoke too soon....he has just woken up and i think he is hungry. Hope everyone is having a better day than me!

Hi All,

Bec & all - I realised last night that i had mastitis. There was a lump on my left breast that just never went down when i was feeding Ela throughout the day. The pain was also toe curling, since i know the symptoms, i ended up going to a clinic at 10pm last night for medication before all the other symptoms crept in like shivering, fever, hot and cold. The Dr. agreed with my diagnosis and put me on antibiotics. I expressed milk at 11pm when i got home to relieve my breasts as Ela had slept at 9.30pm and wouldn't be awake for some time. The pain isn't as bad now, but the lump still sits there. I will express again tonight, a few hours after Ela has gone down to sleep. The MCH nurse warned me about mastitis yesterday with milk building up and sitting in my breast as Ela sleeps for such long hours at night. Oh well, i guess i have put up with the pain for 1-2 days. I had vowed not to express but i guess i have to.

Ela had 3 needles and one oral medication last night. I think i cried more than her! She did very well. We got home and i gave her some Panadol, bf her and put her down and she slept.

Claire- Ela has growth spurts just like Cameron and hers last for 2-3 days where she'll constantly want a feed and be grizzly. Hang in there!

Claire - Sorry to say hun but that stage can go for up too 2 weeks!! I think it was from 6 weeks to 8 weeks for us. Mind you that 2 weeks does go pretty quick. Good luck with it all hun. You might be luckier and it might not last that long for you! Here's hoping! I understand what you mean about leaving them crying when you are driving. Colby seems to HATE the car! We live about 30k's out of town and if i leave going home to the wrong time then boy do i know about it! Colby will scream the whole way home most times. Its horrible. She is normally red aswell with tears in her eyes. It would be harder for me to stop and sooth her than it would be to just keep driving home. Gosh you have yourself a lovely sized little boy there!!! Good to see he is growing nicely.

Bec - I am totally against giving Colby a dummy. Although we have turned to it at time when she was totally unsettled. But lucky for me she does'nt seem to like them! We gave Briley a dummy and now we can't get it off her. Its a savour at times though. Esp now she is cutting her molars. I think i would go crazy if it was'nt for it. But yeah i have learnt from Briley that i'd prefer not to give Colby a dummy. Glad to hear the needles went well. We are going for ours tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing how much she has grown again!

Alison - Glad to hear that your home hun. Fingers crossed Emma keeps putting on weight now. Are you fully forumla feeding now???

Rhiannon - We actually left BOTH the girls with Arrissa (my cousin) on sunday. Brent and i had too go and pick up our horse in his ute! Luckily for her she had her b/f and he took care of Briley while Arrissa looked after Colby. She coped quite well actually. I don't think i would do it again though. I felt too bad about dumping the kids on her!! Sorry to hear that Jensen's routine are'nt going to well. It all takes time honey. Sucks about the car!!

Sehra - How'd you go with the BF issue??? I was going to say the same as Alison. I found that when i was having over-production Colby had a bit more trouble latching on. She always did and after a little bit of sucking the nipple would eventually soften. Good to hear that Ela is growing lovely. Colby is really good at lifting her chest up too when she is on her stomach! Probably because she sleeps on it i suppose. How'd the needles go??

Kim - Hi Kim! Welcome! Congratulations on your little boy. What were his stats at birth??? I know exactly how you feel about falling pregnant again! I would love to have another baby soon but it just would'nt work out! The same thing happened after i had Briley. We started TTC when Briley was 4 months old. I thought i would take a few months as we had'nt been using contraception for quite a long time before i fell pregnant with Briley. So yeah i thought the same thing would happen this time but i fell pregnant on the first go!!! Not the kinda age gap i had planned but nevermind! Like Alison said, maybe sometimes a pregnancy irons out any conception problems!! DP and i also DTD before my 6 week check-up. I think it was about 5 weeks. We have'nt been able to do it since though cause after i got my Mirena put in i have been bleeding heavily! Lucky for both of us its just starting to settle down! :p

Kirst - Good to hear that the formula is working for you! Some babies just need the forumla i think. Briley was the same. We b/f for 1 month and then went onto the formula. At 3 months to the day she started to sleep through. Must have been the full tummy! Hope you had a great day shopping for yourself!!

Hi to everyone else. Hope you are all well

No that i have taken so long to type this, littlest miss is awake. She has been asleep since about 8.30am thismorning! She is sleeping very well at nights now. She sleeps from 8.30pm to 7ish most nights. She slept from 10ish to 8.15am the night before last!! So she is sleeping on average 11 hours a night.

Ok better go...she is hungry!!

Yes, Em is on concentrated formula. she is looking better everyday and will be weighed again in about an hour, gtg wash bottles!

HI all,

We managed to get through the night very well. I don't think Xav got mush of a temp. His cheeks became very red at night so I think he was a little warm. But we didn't have the heater on last night and we gave him a nice bath and a good feed before bed. He slept for 10 hours uninterrupted. He is very tired, so I'm keeping my eye on him. So far he has been sleeping lots but still waking when he needs to.

Sehra, yep we had the rotavirus yesterday too.
I get quite firm every night about 2-3 hours after xavier has gone to bed. I Express then if i don't I leak. Whenever I do express tmi but I massage my boobs and make sure I don't have any lumps, and focus on any particularly firm areas. If I don't want my supply to increase I watch the stream and make sure that I stop before I lose pressure. Because Xavier is sleeping very well, I am quite often very full again by morning. It's then that I start the process of ensuring he is emptying. Sometimes this means he will only have one side, and then I switch to the next side for the next feed and ensure that one is emptied.

If it is unbearable I might express in the morning but just enough to release tension. One or twice I have actually just massaged my boobs while having the pump there but not pumping, just to catch the drips.
Oh and Xavier does have a little trouble initially if I'm really full, but I don't rush him. He will have a few sucks and come off and compose himself, take a few breaths and go back in. But the little tike will suck anything remotely nipple shaped.

So far no temps or pain or anything for me.

Claire, hang in there. I was a little lucky and didn't have too many bad days.

Sara, our dummy has saved our sanity once or twice. I'm just glad that I find if Xavier had it when he went to be he doesn't wake up with it in his mouth. Happy 2 months to Colby and Xavier

Ok so i am back to update you all on us now! Colby is going very well. As i mentioned in my last post she is sleeping around 11 hours a night. Mostly is from 8.30pm to 7ish. Good for me sleep wise but i think my milk production my be getting affected from it. I have been trying to drink enough water during the day too keep it up but i just don't feel like it.

She is a real mumma's girl thats for sure. I have left her twice with Brent and his mum and both times she played up for them. But as soon as i get home and take her she is quiet as a mouse! Cheeky thing.

Colby has been asleep most of the day today but has been awake for most of the days lately. She might be having another growth spurt at the moment, not too sure. She is also a definete water baby. I give her a morning bath in the baby bath and then a bath or a shower with me or Briley in the evenings. Yesterday morning she was kicking and splashing that much water was going everywhere!! I was soaked! So she has obviously become really comfortable with the water.

I am thinking about putting Briley and Colby in the same room soon. Before i was worried that Colby would'nt sleep through until around 3 months and therefore wake Briley during the nights! I kinda jumped to conclusions there! But at the moment Briley is cutting her molars and is REALLY grizzly. She woke up 3 times lastnight and ended up in our bed! So it won't be until she cuts the rest of her molars i think.

Those with 2 children....Have you thought about putting them in the same room yet???

Well i think thats it. We are off to get Colby's needles tomorrow. I am also getting my right ear tested for hearing too.

Xlnt sleeping there Sara. Lanah is still around the 9+hrs at the moment. We're thinking bout putting the girls in the same room at some stage, in double bunk beds, but at moment they're in separate rooms at least until Lanah is out of her cot. Holly was in a big bed at around 13-14mths old. That way we get the computer/gym room back & can get the huge computer desk out of the loungeroom.

Holly had her 18mth needle today, I take her to the nurse at my GP's, its still free & no huge lineups like there are at the CHC needle days. The receptionist minded bub, she said it was a fight between my GP & the receptionist as to who got to hold her when she started fussing, hehehe. Lanah's are booked in for 2mths (15th).

WTG Ali. What does Emma weight now? Will she go to normal formula when she's back in line with her normal weight?

Sehra, ow ow ow. :hug: That's not good. I'm with the others- darn good thing you know the signs and were able to ward off all the really really serious consequences. I'm a bit of a novice here, but Mum tells me that she only had one attack of mastitis with the four of us, and got rid of it by sitting up all night with my sister and pretty much continously nursing/expressing till the lump got worked through. Sounds painful, though.

Claire, Laura is also in a growth spurt stage, or, as I call it, a demon feeding stage. Yowling and grizzling, and HOW DARE I PUT THAT BREAST AWAY GET IT BACK HERE WOMAN. Interestingly, though, she doesn't have many dirty nappies during those stages- millions of wet ones, but only a few explosive pootastrophes. I'll hang in there if you will. :)

Sara, how do you shower with a baby? I've been wondering for a while, because Laura's getting a bit big for her bath. Any chance you could provide me with step by step instructions?

Kirst, glad to hear that the formula is working out. And the shopping- it was you who had a delightful time at the shops? ;)

Here, we have had a ghastly time. Last night I had organised to go to my gym and get a program update (in reality, an entirely new program, because I haven't been for so long). DH was, he said, quite happy to look after Laura for the time. The gym is 15 mins walk, so I set off at 7.40 for my 8pm appointment. Laura was asleep in her hammock.

Well, the gym will be good. They've set up a circuit which only takes 30 minutes, and they're still running the classes and have all the other weights as well. I'll be doing the circuit.
I do wish I hadn't seen my measurements though. :( I seem to have PUT ON weight since Laura was born, even though I've been breastfeeding madly. And 109cm around my waist! Good Lord. No more cheese for me.

So I set off home, thinking dark thoughts about cheese, and was greeted at the door by DH and a howling Laura. DH shoved her into my arms and said "TAKE HER" and vanished. It turned out that she'd woken 10 mins after I'd gone and hadn't stopped crying since. DH had sung to her, rocked her, walked her up and down, asked her to shush, sworn at her (and at me, good thing I was out of earshot), told her that "this is how babies end up dead!", gone walking up the street and down again in the pram, and was despairing. Why he didn't just ring the gym and ask me to come back I don't know! The number's on the fridge! (I hadn't taken my mobile).
But he was so shaken by that hour that he couldn't sleep properly, and he was still upset with me this morning. I have a feeling that my gym plans are going to go by the wayside, because he won't want to look after her again.

Sara, Xavier seems to be following suit quite well with colby. we got 10 hours after his needles and 9 hours last night. but at the moment he is sleeping sometimes during the day.

Alison, that's fantastic to hear the weight gain is going up!!

Shell what a great GP you must have. I don't think mine would be putting his arms out to take babies.

Kristen :lol: at the how dare you put that away comment. I get looks from xavier as if to say why are you bothering to put those silly clothes on in the first place. It will just take longer when I'm hungry. Poor you and your hubby, did he get a little shocked. maybe he felt a little unloved and powerless because he couldn't soothe her.
My DH showers with Xavier too, I have only bathed with him. Bathing I found easy because he couldn't root around looking for my nipple 'cause he couldn't reach, but I think he would be ok because he really calms down in the water.

Kim I've found that if I do try to use the dummy some times it get spat back in my face as I have the real thing to offer, why would he want the imitation one.

Last night we had a visit from a friend. her little boy is about 10 weeks older a lot chubbier but only a couple of cm's taller. we lay them beside each other to compare. We have photos but they are still on the camera, it was pretty cute and we finally got a photo of xavier smiling.
My little man is also getting a lot easier to amuse (slowly) it was quite funny watching mum brush her teeth this morning. I have been able to keep his attention by reading some books to him too, he's not overly interested in toys though.

Kirsten - Lol at your day! I visited my work the other day.... Couldn't stay long, and no cake for me either! They didn't know I was coming. I would have stayed longer, but as we have a small office (when I left, there was my boss, supervisor, another girl, me and my replacement. The supervisor left about 3wks ago), they were kinda busy. They want to know when I'm coming back! Might be about 6mths, due to financial obligations, for about 2 days to start with a week. Possibly 3. Oh your poor husband! I find that even tho Andrew doesn't seem to phased by Jensen crying, I'm appologising to him.

Sehra - The circumcision is for health reasons. This is one decision Andrew had to make. He's weighed all the pros and cons. His brother is uncirc and has had a myriad of problems. A friend of the family had to have it done at 40. Also, Andrew is circ and we think, you can't teach what you don't know. Jensen could come to him one day with a question about it, and Andrew wont be able to answer coz he wont know. IYKWIM. Can't come to me, coz I certainly wont know! Sorry to hear about the mastitis. My sister had it bad. Apparently there something you can do with cabbage leaves.... If you express, you'll have some for when you can no longer BF.

Ali - Woo hoo with Emma's weight. Thats great news. With the vaccinations, I was told to stay for 10 mins after them at the surgery (or where-ever you got them), incase of any reactions, coz apparently they seem to occur rapidly. Maybe not! Guess I better get some baby panadol.

Claire - I think we're in the middle of our growth spurt. With the lack of sleep the other day, all Jensen wants to do now is cuddle and sleep. When he is awake, he grizzles. Maybe (fingers crossed) it only lasts a few days... not that I mind the cuddles, just makes it hard to do things (like type on here!)

Sara - Jensen loves the car! Most times he falls asleep, or cries but his dummy solves that. Lately tho, he's getting to the stage where he loves to look around, so hes awake in the car, just watching. Does the hospital not do hearing tests at birth? Why just that side? Jensen does startle at loud noises, just not as often as I think he should. Maybe I should mention that at the next health nurse appt.

Rebecca - I express to purposely make more milk. That way I have some for when I go back to work.

Shell - Our vaccinations are on the 18th, exactly 2mths after he was born. However, its going to come around far too quickly. It's 2 wks away, seems like just yesterday I made the appt for 3wks. :( Where is the time going?

Well, there's no news on my car yet. Andrew is a mechanic, and conveniently works on these types of cars at his work. So he's fixing it after work. He can only work until light fades (it's at his parents place), and then he comes home. Well, after I posted my last post about his problem sleeping, It got better! The following night he woke and cried just quietly enough to wake me for a feed, then dropped off right back and last night slept from 745 to 230 and fed and then 3 til 630. Couldn't thank him enough! Did wake up in a start that he hadn't woken yet. Leaked over the bed... but a good sleep was had by all. Hes been sleeping heaps, and when he's awake, some times he actually looks like he's taking in things around him... like the rattles on his bouncer. He smiles heaps too, but its hard to take a good photo of that when you have to make him smile as well as have the camera ready to take that photo! Well, today, while waiting to pick Andrew up for Jensens consult at the circ dr, Im at Andrews parents place. Andrews nan called from the hospital asking for Robert, Andrews dad. I told her he was out shopping and he'll call her back and her alzheimers is getting so bad that conversation lasted 12min going round and round. She thinks shes at the dr and is going home today. Shes at the hospital, after just having some surgery on her gangrenous heel. Shes actually never coming home... she needs high care which she cant get at home. It was such a hard phone call, as I've never heard her like that.

Jensen seems to know what I've written, coz after the post of his sleeping, he slept like an angel. Last night too. Last night he only woke the once, instead of 3 times! He sleeps heaps, feeds heaps, grizzly when hes awake but settles and concentrates on the things around him! The rattles on his bouncer are fascinating apparently

I think I've forgotten something, but Ive been at this for hours, just typing this one handed and being interrupted and cuddling. GTG eat and sort things out before I go.

Hello everyone!!

Sehra When I had mastitis, I found having a hot shower before feeding helped to make a painful feed a bit more bearable and I would massage over the lumpy areas to try and free off some of the built up milk. Also after a feed, ice packs helped to soothe my achey sore boobs! I hope it clears up for you soon.

Sara ICan't imagine having to put up with this "devil child" period for 2 weeks or more!!I hope it passes soon!
I hope Colby enjoyed her 2 month birthday and was on her best behaviour :)

AliI am so pleased for you that Emma is gaining weight, it must be such a relief for you to know that the formula is working.
Have you got your new pram yet? have you had a chance to use it?

Kirsten I know what you mean about the nappy situation. In the process of changing Cam's nappy in the early hours of the morning I got showered in poo, my god i have never seen such a powerful poo explosion!!
The exact same thing happened to my hubby when I left Cameron with him so I could go to the dentist, he was left with a screaming boy for over an hour!!
and finally...your daughter was born on my birthday!!

Sorry to hear about your hubby's nan. A close family friend of mine had dementia, and it broke my heart every time I spoke to her because it took hold so quickly and she forgot so much.
I hope you get your car fixed soon.

Yesterday was our worst day yet.Cameron would not feed properly, he kept on spitting out my nipple and being very fussy. He would not sleep and he would not settle and my day was spent listening to him crying and crying and crying. In the end I decided to express off my milk and bottle feed him so that I could be sure he got some food. I did this for 3 feeds and it seemed to do the trick.
Today he is sleeping and good natured, although i am not convinced that the feeding issues have completely gone, as he is selectively feeding from one breast, only occasionally accepting both sides.
I finally managed to get him to sleep last night but I think only because he had worn himself out. The only way he would stay asleep was to have "sounds for silence cd" (white noise section) on continuous loop fairly loudly.

Bec - Yep they are following each other too a tee are'nt they?!?!?! How you going with the BF? Is Xav still putting on weight?? Colby went down at 8.30pm lastnight and is still sleeping now. Its 7.45am. Seeing as she had her needles yesterday she might sleep a little longer! I think i might go and wake her soon as she will need a feed. Plus 12 hours is too long to leave between meals to keep my milk up. I am really panicky about losing my milk supply with her sleeping so long.

Kirsten - Oh dear! Your DH really did'nt cope well did he. Poor man. Colby does the same thing. I have left Brent twice now. Colby was sound asleep when i left her and about 10 mintues after i left she started. Both times! Lucky for him though his mum lives with us and she helped out with Briley who responds to Colby's crying and visa versa!!! :redface: I reckon that the babies can sense the tension and that makes the situation much worse. Making them cry even more. Your DH will adjust. He has too really does'nt he! You never know....you might get to your gym class. Do they have a childcare facilty there???

Kim - What a big boy you have there! He seems to be gaining weight very nicely. I am worried about Colby's weight a little too. Dr seems to think it all good though. My boobs would really hurt if i tried to jump on tramp!! I have naturally big breasts which make it hard to rum, jump or bounce at the best of time let alone while they have milk in them!!

Rhiannon - Yes the hospital does hearing test. Only this hearing test was for me!!! When i went for my 6 week check-up i told her about the headaches i was getting so she did a big check over on me. Well it turned out that i was little hard of hearing in my right ear so she said next time i come in to get a hearing test. I ended up cancelling my appointment as i rushed for time. Colby got her hearing test done before we left the hospital and was fine. Great to hear that Jensen is giving you a bit more of sleep at nights now! He seems to be becoming a little more content with himself. Bummer about the car though.

Shell - Briley is 16 months today and is finally showing signs of being ready for a big bed. Not that i am in a rush for the cot yet, Colby is doing fine in the bassinette. I am not going to rush her in it, we don't even have a bed for her yet. When we get one i will just start with day sleeps i think and go from there. Are'nt you scared that Holly will fall out of the bunk??? Obviously she will have to be on the top bunk. I suppose you could put up a rail. I'd still be scared!

Claire - I found that when i BF Briley, only for 4 weeks, she favoured the right boob. Not sure why though. I have heard of babies perfering one side to the other. Has you checked to see if the milk is still coming out properly??? If the music works to settle him....let him have it!!! At least this way you will get 5 mins to yourself!

Ali - Oh that excellent news. Emma must be on the mend hey! Fingers crossed she keeps it up.

Well we had a massive day yesterday. We took my cousin and her b/f to see a recruitment place and they both got jobs starting saturday. Then we went to get Colby's needles which were perfectly fine. She did cry but only a little bit. Not enough to make me cry anyways!! Then we went to the beach and had lunch with family till around 3.30pm and then went grocery shopping. By the end of the day poor Briley was buggered. And her gums were playing up too.

So yeah yesterday we got Colby weighed at her appointment and i think her weight had begun to plateu. She is still only 5.95kg. I asked the Dr if their weight starts to slow down now and she said no. Apparently FF babies grow much more than BF babies. This is all new territory for me now as Briley only BF for just under 4 weeks. I never thought about this sort of thing. I thought you just had to feed them and that was that. Mind you Colby is still in the acceptable ranges for her weight. I just thought she would be heavier since our last weighing.

Well this is a massive post. Sorry girls. I might not be in on the weekend as we are building a shelter for our new horse! Oh i forgot to tell you all about that! Later! Yeah and i want to lay a slab of cement and build a pen for our geese. They are well and truly into mating season and have'nt got anywhere to lay. We have been putting it off for ages so because Brent has an RDO this weekend we are doing that!

Ok ending this now! I have to go and wake Colby up...she is still asleep and its 8.10am!! Big sleep!

Rhiannon, You need to stay after the injections in case of anaphalaxis (sp). the rest of the reactions can happen anytime in the next 24hours and the new rotavirus within the week!! I made Nathan make the decision on circumcision too. He's not so Xavier won't be either, and it will be Nathan's job to do the teaching in that department. Hmm, I should probably be expressing to make more for when I return to work, as I'm planning to in january, but I was still hoping to be feeding him at night by then, so I wouldn't be able to just switch over to a frozen supply, hmm decisions decisions.
I sometimes sleep on a towel so i don't leak all over the bed and wake in a cold puddle.

Claire, I hope your days start to improve. Sometimes I think all they need is a proper sleep and a proper feed to get them back to a happy place. I'm sure it won't last.

Sara, wow that's a champion effort with sleep, we are now averaging about 9 hours. Xavier was very drowsy the day after his needles. Have you considered expressing after she goes to bed but before you do to increase your supply over the long sleep time?? I express every night a little while after xavier has gone to bed.
I don't know how much weight Xavier is putting on because he won't be officially weighed again until december!! but I will be doing some of my own little weigh ins before then to check him.

Spoke 2 the dietician this morning 2 double check 100cal formula recipe n she asked how Em is going. Advised her that Em is demanding every 2 hrs but snacking so I'm holding her out to 3 hrs n she takes a proper feed. Dietician is happy with that n is looking forward 2 seeing a rounder baby next week.

I am getting implanon put in next week. The needle is HUGE!!!

Sara - as long as she has tons of wet nappies u dont need 2 worry.
