Oh woot I have a new avvy!! Ray yours looks fab too .
Sarah, your post sounds fine :)
If I'd always taken Milo off the boob after 40 minute he'd have not been happy, some times feeds would take over an hour with him. Oscar is a bit faster a lot of the time.
I found picking sleep signs incredibly difficult with DS1, because he ha jerky movements all the time, so it was hard to tell if they were tired signs or it was playtime, but you are right it gets easier as they get older. Seem like it doesnt help now, but there is light at the end of the tunnel :)
Oscar is lying in bed, but isnt sleeping, still hes happy. Hes not awake enough to play, and if I pick him up he'll think hes hungry then fall asleep after 4 sucks so I will wait to see if he goes to sleep. Seeing the LC at 12:30 I hope she can offer some advice.
Ooh we have the hiccups now, there goes any thoughts of sleeping. Does anyone elses' bub seem to have the hiccups all the time? Sometimes his will go on for a half hour.
ETA: Thanks Candince I like your mei tai! :)
Rayray, Thomas gets the hiccups a lot too, and he always did while he was in utero, so I guess he's just a hiccuppy baby! It's annoying when they get then right before a sleep time though. Re working, I managed to pump at work and kept Clare on b/milk until she was one, then I just did night and morning feeds for the next year - are you able to pump at work? Good luck with your LC appointment!
Sarah, I'm not a great fan of the "feed, play, sleep" routine - I'm not a big fan of imposing anything on newborns, really. Maybe that's why Thomas is such a monster ;) Mind you today he has had one imposed on him because dh went away on a three day conference (good for you dh, don't you dare complain you are tired when you get back) and I had to get up, get four kids up for school, take them, get home, clean the house up - and the little bugger went down for a nap and has happily stayed there. I guess I need to be more brutal. Sigh. I guess we all have to use what works! I'm so sorry you had such a nasty bout of mastitis, but I'm very glad you are better. And if feeling at your wits' end makes you a bad mum, I'm joining the bad mummy club! I was in tears this morning wondering how the heck I'm going to get through this week with a velcro baby and VCE exams for my 18yo and the 5yo acting out and the messiest kids on the planet. That deep exhaustion of a new baby... ugh. There's nothing quite like it, is there??
Dee, have you tried squirting breast milk in Ethan's eye? It's a great cure for conjunctivitis. I hope you don't get it too - when Clare was a baby, dh caught conjunctivitis from her and was really, really sick with it. Babies are such little germ factories.
TM, Rayray had it so right - this is not all about your DP, it's about little Jade and her getting the best start she can, and her best asset is *you*. A lot of men don't like it when their needs have to take a back seat to the very pressing and important needs of mother and baby. A lot of guys find themselves having to do a lot of growing up. Please tell him to stuff it when he says he won't allow something, and just do what is best for you. That's the only way he is going to get the message. I'm so glad you've got your mum. I hope things look brighter for you right now. (Oh, and try fenugreek capsules to get your supply back up - take three capsules three times a day - they are working when your sweat smells like maple syrup! But watch out because they can make your tummy a bit upset.)
Amazed, I have a packet of those hydrogel pads but I haven't used them, as you have to wash you nipples before and after a feed, and the way Thomas feeds, the time he wasn't on the boob I'd spend hanging over the bathroom sink. I'm glad you are getting some use out of them! You must be so tired with all that feeding and having to carry him around.
Thomas' new trick is smiling. He's smiling at everything and everyone. First of all he saved them for his baths, and now every time you look at him or put him in front of something new he smiles. I think he is trying to get his toys to smile back :D He even smiles at the box of wipes, expectantly waiting for something to happen.
I'm doing what I swore I wouldn't do now too and using a dummy to help him settle when he wakes up during his sleeps. I have been using one to allow me to finish doing things like going to the toilet when he's hungry, but this morning I realised that I just can't do it all with my Magic Bosoms. And he settled beautifully for his morning nap. None of those expensive Avent orthodontic ones either, thankyouverymuch. He prefers the el cheapo cherry teat ones. He's got two bright pink ones ;) Oops, he's just woken up. Good-oh, time for some nice awakies before our afternoon sleep together.
TMTM - I swore I would never use a dummy. That resolve lasted about 5 days. Now it puts Xanthe to sleep really well, I just pull it out before I put her down and she is fine. It buys me enough time to heat up her bottle in the middle of the night, and change her nappy, without screams or tears. We love the dummy in this house :).
Sarah - I used the feed play sleep routine with my other 2 and it worked well, but Ethan has been sick and we had dad stay with us so he's been cuddled alot, but he still sleeps well during the night so Im happy. He does have long awake periods tho.
Glad the mastitis cleared up, very nasty indeed!
And I heard same thing about bub using mum as a dummy from my cnyh nurse today. I said how ethan is still only having 15min feeds and she said thats fine coz he sucks vigourusly the whole time and 85% of the milk comes out in first 15-20mins. Makes me feel better anyway.
TMTM - so cute that Tom smiles so much. I've had a few smiles from ethan but not all the time coz he's sick and irritable at the moment.
I use a dummy, did for all my kids. Never had probs giving it up and they both have perfect straight teeth so I dont see a prob with it. If we never did all the so called 'no no's ' we'd be cranky grumpy insomniacs! Do whatever makes life easy as long as its not going to do any long or short term damage.
My poor bubby is sick and grumpy, been grizzly all day! had a quick half hr nap all day, so I'm letting him sleep on me now to stop him getting over tired and cranky.
I'd better go, getting a sore neck from this position... lol
Hi guys
I've been admitted to the mental health ward at my local hossy (not supposed to have my fone but wrangled it in somehow) and awaiting a place at the mother and baby clinic in the next few days. I just couldn't cope anymore, mum was doing everything and I don't even want to hold her for 5 mins so im trying to get help...
tm - it sounds like you are doing the right thing seeking help and suppprt even if it doesnt feel like it to you
I hope thing go well :)
TM, so so glad you are getting some help. Make the most of the mother/baby unit. I've had a couple of stays and it is great for moral support, rest, and figuring out the baby. Take care.
Em kudos to you for seeking help. You are doing the right thing and are in the right place. I used a mother baby clinic with Jake when he was about 6wks old and they were fabulous. Big hugs you are a great mum and a beautiful person and are not alone. xxx
I wish I could use a dummy. Milo wouldnt take one, and LC thinks Oscar wont either, cos he cant suck them correctly, his tongue doesnt do the right movements becuase of the tongue tie. So I'm thinking that was why Milo didnt either.
Well Im getting a evening nap which is really rare around here, so much so Im wondering whether to wake him up for a feed, I quite like the sleeps at night thing we have going on I dont want him to get all out of whack and sleep all afternoon and be awake at night!
Tatt - I'm glad ur getting help and support. Having a new baby sure isn't the easiest thing in the world, Ur doing all the right things. U've had alot go on in the past months/weeks which would make the whole experience much harder. Ur a great mum, hang in there chick! ;)
TM - thinking of you! You've had such a rough time over the last few weeks in particular. Hopefully spending this time at the mother & baby clinic will help things with Jade settle down. We're all here for you!
tatoo_mama: great to hear that you are seeking support. i'm sure both of you will be better for it.
dee: i let jonah sleep on me too, when he gets cranky. i'm now typing with a baby draped over my lap / chest!
Toomanytoomany: when using the hydrogel, i would wash my nipple area off with a wet towel that i kept next to the bed / feeding area and would sometimes even wet the towel with a bit of the drinking water i also kept next to me and i'd pat it dry with a dry towel. seemed to work for me. the gels are absorbent so basically you don't want them soaking up milk.
all this dummy talk is making me think i should get one. we don't have one and i wonder if it would make life a bit easier.
on the other hand, jonah slept really well last night. yes, he woke up every two hours to feed but fell asleep quickly after feeding and i fed him in bed in the side lying position so i was only half awake. i feel slept! interesting feeling; i was beginning to forget.
the little guy is sooo serious about his food... nothing can distract him when being fed and he has this look of intense concentration. that's the job of a baby, no? to eat and eat and eat and eat:-)
Hi guys thanks so much 4 the msgs of support
Last nite was very scary cause I was in the general mental health unit (think like in the movies with singing old ladies and old men shuffling thru the halls....gulp) but thankfully the MBU had a spare room 2day and I got sent up here...it really is amazing its only 2 yrs old looks like a big house inside and the nicest docs and nurses...they hav bub sleep for the first 2 nites in the nursery so I can get some sleep and I will be staying for at least 2 weeks...so I will be sure to keep u all updated...the mothercraft nurses are gonna help me re establish BF, put a feed play sleep routine in place and here they do group therapy, meditation, counselling, as well as medication (they started me on lexapro today) so im feeling very hopeful!
Jade still isn't settling, is awake for 4 or 5 hrs at a time but then sleeps for 4 or 5 hrs aswel...the nurses reckon she has terrible wind caus of the formula.
Tomorro is a new day and im looking forward 2 sussing out my baby and sorting myself out!
Oh and go the dummies on this side haha, I take it out before she falls asleep tho so she doesn't need it to get to sleep.
Tatt - That sounds great and ur sounding very positive about it all too which is a fantastic start!! Well done! I have friends who have been to MBU before and they loved it, it really does make a world of difference to have ppl who are experienced in settling difficult babies and even just having a little break and someone to talk to can change ur whole perception of the situation.
And I know how u feel, I was hospitalized with a kidney infection 5 yrs ago and I was put in the dementia ward... (due to lack of beds)There was a lady next to me who sang the vegimite commercial over and over and in the middle of the night I would wake up to a naked 80+ yro man standing in the middle of my room... it was freaky and eventho I was doped up on morphine it didnt make it any nicer... lol The lady next to me kept putting my bag and shoes outside the door coz "she" was getting picked up... lol (she wasnt) and I was hooked up to drips and machines so I couldnt get them back... DH walked into me and her fighting over my bag and me yelling "it's mine give it back!!!!" and crying He couldnt believe his eyes...! hahaha I had to suffer that for 2 WEEKS!!! lol
Amazd - LOL yes I do believe it's a baby's job to eat and poo...
Well I have been sleeping out in the lounge room for the past 2 nights with Ethan. I dont know if it's just coz the lounge room is warmer or if he has decided to start a routine but he has been sleeping like an angel inhis basinette.
He has his last feed around 10pm then has a little cuddle and off to bed, wakes up for a feed at 4am (which is a really quick 10 min feed - if that) then off to sleep and we wake up at 7:30am... I cut out the night nappy change unless he's really full or dirty but coz he's only having a little feed over night I haven't needed to change him for the past 2 nights... And since sleeping in the lounge room he hasn't had any wind at all over night (has it during the day a little bit tho in late arvo) and hasn't been grunting and keeping m awake...
He has been a dream... and DH has been getting sleep so he's happier at work and more energetic.
I wonder how Nat and Sue are going? and Blue... haven't heard from them in a while.
Hey Girls, I just did a breif read through everything so I'm afraid my personals are very short and sweet.
Tatt Mama - Big hugs to you hun. You're doing the right thing. Just hang in there, I'm sure everything will become clearer as to what you should do while you're there
Oh can you get a script for Motilium to increase your milk supply? My Dr has me taking it. I was only able to express 60-70mls of milk every 3 hours and Pip was wanting 120, so my supply was realy low :( All the best with it.
Oscar - Dummys rock!
Dee- Yeah I'm here, just dpn't have any spare time these days what with Olives needing picking, Phils chiro appts, keeping Mia occupied and just trying to stay on top of everything. DH was diognosed with cronic fatigue a few months back and he uses that as his excuse to do absolutely no baby work during the night now that he's back to work. So I'm struggling a bit since Phil has decieded that 3am is a lovely time to have a good chat and giggle with his mummy.... so cute but so tirering :asleep:
Sarah - Yeah Mastitus sucks big time. I have had 3 Mas fevers now but with using my Swing pump and hot compress's I have avoided having to take anti biotics much to my Drs delight actually :D
Feeding is getting good now. I'm now taking Motilium to increase my milk supply and I'm averaging about 110mls every 3 hours which is so much better... but I'm nervous because I can only take it for another week. I'm scared that my supply will fall back again. We'll see. Fingers crossed.
Anyway that's all from me, sorry that I don't get to be so interactive anymore. I might have to palm the baby list off to someone whos online a bit more... Any volunteers? I'm still thinking about everyone and your gorgeous little babies :heartbeat:
TM - what formula is she on, and have they offerred an suggestions as to a different one? I hope they are offering support not just saying she has wind due to the formula. Oscar has shocking wind (If I believed in colic, Id use that word) and hes breastfed,a nd Milo was the same.
Sometimes Milo would be awake for 10-12 hours at a time in the first few weeks, it settled down at about 6-8 weeks I think, he was never a fabulous day sleeper though, much better at night time.
We went to the GP today about Oscars belly button. He doesnt think its a granuloma, just mucky beuase its such an 'innie' that its not getting air to dry it out. He prescribed us some cream to put on and see how that goes.
Hope everyone is doing well.
HI all - everyone is very quiet in here.
Just wanted to send a big hug to Oscar as she isn't too well at the moment.
