fuzzy - I hope you're not affected by the cyclone.. what is with this insane weather? I actually started giving Isaac a dummy at 3 months, he was going crazy sucking on his hands until he gagged on them. I held out as long as I could because I didn't want him to have one but it really helped him. He doesn't use it a lot though and I don't give it to him during the night. Yes Isaac does has a comforter.. my boob! Seriously though, no he doesn't have anything like that, I never really thought to give him one but maybe I should. The thing I was worried about when they suggested giving him a dummy instead of a feed was actually stretching out the space between feeds. I don't really think that I should be doing that, that's why I questioned it. Doing that would go against the way I have decided to feed on demand. I just think Isaac probably needs either regular feeds for whatever reason, or he needs the comforting that only bf can give him. Either way I've decided I won't try to change it.
yay for the sippy cup success!
-
Bec - i could be wrong, but I think that Fuzzy was suggesting a comfort toy as opposed to a dummy. I read lotsa things that said you can't "pick" their comfort toy, they select it. Rubbish. We decided on DS's and just started always giving it to him when he slept (can't remember what age, actually think it was quite a bit older than this) and he got a big sleep association with it. We bought an extra one (can't recommend doing that enough - so pick something you CAN source another of)... and preferrably machine-washable. I think it really helped his sleep as he got older. The one we picked had a rattle and it worked quite well a) for him to find it in the dark, b) we'd hear if he was stirring/awake from the rattle and c) I think he has a comfort association with the noise. This time Annika has a dragon (pink one on my FB profile) only downer is no rattle, so i'll be interested to see how that goes.
As for your decision about not changing it, good on ya - I think that's a great way to stick to your gut feel & the way you wanna do things.
Fuzzy - GL with the cyclone, hope there's no problems for you
AFM well I've spent half of today bawling and the other half resettling (or attempting to!) my very not-sleeping over-tired baby girl. The bawling is because we're rehoming our beautiful dog, she's going down to tassie to live with my bro & his wife (and their equally energetic dog). I'm so sad about it, but I konw it's the right thing for her. DH hasn't been able to walk her for yonks with his back and now the vertigo on top of that... it's been nearly 2 months now :( plus she really is too rambunctious for toddlers and it's starting to be more of an issue - they're both so excitable (dog & child that is). Plus I cannot walk 30kg of toddler/baby/stroller + 20kg of very excitable dog as well. So it's a good solution & we'll still get to see her, but I was so sad about it this morning. By the end of hte day with an unsettled baby, sick hubby & whingy toddler I felt much better about it. Funny that huh. Now just gotta get rid of the two cats (nah, only joking!).

Cyclone? What happened to the cyclone? Its sunny, no wind and about 35 degrees!!
Bec - yep I meant like a toy or something along those lines. Like Buzzie said - we picked one for Chloe and bought a spare one too. You could try one for Isaac - you never know!
Buzzie - oh no for having to give your dog up! Thats so so sad! I totally sympathise with the bawling. Thats great your brother is taking her though
-
oops sorry my answer was a bit long winded, I knew what you meant. I think I was trying to settle Isaac when I was typing so I probably didn't make sense. What I meant was I agree with you about dummies, he has one but I don't like it. No comfort toy though, I wasn't really aware of them.. I've decided I don't want to stretch out his feeds.
Do you think a comfort toy will help him settle easier? I'm not really sure what to give him. Do you think this would be ok? They are smaller than they look, about 20cm high. I have 2, my sisters both bought him one unaware the other had too, they live something like 800km away from each other!
-
Bec, I must admit I actually didn't fully use one till bub was a bit older (maybe 10 months?? Or 8 months? can't remember exactly). I guess I like them to have more control over what is where (i.e. in hands/mouth) and their own rolling & all that jazz... but you can start building up the sleep assocation from now in the daytime when supervised IYKWIM. I always looked for kidsafe features.. no plastic eyes, removable chokable bits. From the pic, they look pretty good I reckon. I've actually broken my own rule with Annika's dragon cos the eyes are plastic, but they're huge lol so should beok.
Well I did some serious settling work today & got huge rewards. nearly 5 hours of napping from Missie Annika yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!
-
Belfie - sorry that you had to say a little good bye to your puppy - but can totally understand why. My step mother asked me when I was pregnant when I was getting rid of the cats! No way... unless H was allergic. I wouldn't have survived the pregnancy without those little kitty kats. Glad you got a good 5 hours from Miss A.
Fuzzy - good work om the sippy cup - must get myself one of those soon... well for Hannah, not me. Glad the cyclone was a non event for you. Looks like there's a couple heading to the Qld coast.... DH tells me - I am glad you're going to your mums early in the week so that you're home later in the week. I thought this was a bit cryptic but then asked if he meant because of the cyclone ( which he's mentioned a couple of times over the weekend).....
Bec - good decision - I haven't got a specific comfort toy yet - going to use one when Hannah is a touch older.... but reading what other's have said maybe it will help her ? Seems lately during the day - I can only eek one sleep cycle out of her. I try to ignore her when she wakes, but then she just becomes hysterical. I try to re settle her - she just seems to think it's time to pay. So I just get her up, let her be awake for a little less time than usual and try to put her back to sleep. Sometimes it works and others not so much. I wish this morning I had rested when she was asleep rather than do housework!
Well - I know it's not as brave or adventurous as Bec, but tomorrow I am going to my mums with Hannah just me, no DH. It's a 2 hour drive, so it will be interesting to see how we both go, and how DH goes being without us. I think for me more than anything it's just I put up subconscious obstacles or fears to doing things. In reality I know I can do this, so I am not sure why I am apprehensive. Oh well .. onwards and upwards.
Deana - how's Blake doing? How are you? Have missed you posting. Hope you're going well.
Fuzzy - how did work go? you said you had to come back and feed Chloe?
Just a quick round up now - let's see if I can actually remember everyone - a BIG Hello to Apes & Isla, Buzzie & Bella, Connie & George, Chuckie & Pearl, Catherine & Avangline, Kirsten & Sam, Pantha & Lotte, Wite & Harlow, Angie & Penny (hope you're still following, even if not posting).
I am having my MRI today - will be glad when it's done and then I won't be apprehensive about it anymore.... I never really would have thought I was the nervous type, but I am a little apprehensive about how I will react to being confined. Was told on Friday to expect to "be in there about an hour". Oh well, will let you all know how I go... whether I wig out and need tranquilizers or manage to get through it all ok ish.
-
Sorry ladies, just a quick one from me. I just found out an old friend of mine who I had lost touch with died yesterday. I hadn't thought of this person in over 5 years, and now that he is gone I just feel really upset. I feel like there have been so many tragic loses over the past few weeks.... terrible.
Dory - when you do end up doing it (MRI and going to your mums) - make sure you allow yourself to be proud and congratulate yourself! Even if you know in reality you will be fine and you have nothing to be nervous about, actually carrying it out means you beat all those negative thoughts, so you deserve a pat on the back!!
Since day 1 I have had a little Richmond face towel in George's cradle with him, eventually I hope this will become his comforter... I also have a few of them so I can put them in the wash without him noticing.
He doesn't use a dummy, mainly because it frustrates him... he much prefers his thumb, and for now, I am ok with that.
I have no idea how to teach George to use a sippy cup... I tried the other day and he had no idea what to do with it. Any tips??
-
Connie - I am sorry to hear that your friend has died....be gentle on yourself as you grieve your friend's life and passing, and don't beat yourself up over losing touch - it just happens sometimes even with teh best of intentions... Thanks for your support ... I got through the MRI really well - it was 20 mins for head scan then 30 mins for spine. When the first one on the head was over it didn't even feel like 20 mins... I thought there was a problem and they were taking me out early... LOL.... I didn't expect that. I was expecting to wig out. The second scan of 30 mins was Ok too. So I am quite pleased with myself and I did get to lie down and not fuss about housework or a fussy baby. Dh did well wiht his bab sitting duties.
Can't help on the sippy cup... sorry.
Richmond. The Tigers. Black and Gold. ( Do I sound like an ASD kid or what). The first ever AFL game I went to was a Lions v Richmond game. It was when everyone thought Richo was in decline but then he turned himself around and got really fit and had a good couple of seasons before he retired. The nephew of a work colleague of mine played for Richmond for a while, but not last year. Can't remember his name just at the minute, but about 2 or 3 years ago he returned from injury and wore a helmet? I can't believe I've forgotten his name.
-
Dory - so glad to hear the MRI went well (they're pretty noisy huh!), you're a tough lil' chicken. When do you get the results?
-
Connie - so sorry to hear about your friend.
dory - good to hear your MRI was not too bad. You'll be fine when you go to your mums. What I did was acknowledge that travelling alone is scary and daunting etc, but then I said to myself its just a string of different situations, and I'll deal with each one as they come up. And I was fine.. you will be too.
Isaac had his first swimming lesson today, it was great. He even went underwater a few times! I was worried the pool might be one of those heavily chlorinated heated ones, but it wasn't. It was salt water and not heated so less chance of germs and bugs to catch. This afternoon was awful though, because he hadn't slept then had the half hour in the pool, he was so unsettled and with the heat it was just an awful afternoon. He's sleeping nicely now though.
4 month immunisations tomorrow, wish us luck.. so not looking forward to it after last time.
-
Belfie - thanks! The neurologist said when she referred me for the MRI that it will take up to two weeks for the results to come in. My next app with the neurologist is 14 March. She said they would call through some of the blood work results as they came in, but nothing yet. I am really curious to know if I failed the GTT or not so might call. I am content to wait for my next appointment. Some of the symptoms are getting worse which is annoying but not much to be done about it now.
I still think you're super woman right now. Have you managed to get out exercising again?
Bec - thanks you are so right to break up something that seems big into lots of manageable bits. Sometimes it's easy to get sidetracked with how big something seems rather than a strategy to get through it. It's good to acknowledge fear and uncertainty too - hopefully then they go back to their corner once they are acknowledged. Swimming sounds great except for the disruption to Isaacs sleep. GL tomorrow with the vaccinations - I found Hannah's reaction to be different.... only a couple of hours total of being miserable as opposed to the first time of 6-8 hours. So hopefully Isaac breezes through.
Hannah has had diarrhoea I think. She's gone twice, maybe three times today ( and she is usually every two days) and the last time was just before bed time - preceded by 4 farts that an adult would be proud of ( if they are crass! LOL) and then two nappy changes. Second nappy was more watery/runny. But she's not had any change in her behaviour nor has she gone off her food or had a temp or more than usual on the vomiting. So will see what comes of it all. Just it's the first time.....
Sleep tight everyone.
-
dory - Are you talking about Mark Coglan?
-
connie - babies will only take to things when they are ready so i think with the sippy cup you can only keep trying till he can do it. with DS i let him play with one all the time till he was coordinated enough to do it himself.
Bec - hope the needles went ok, we have our today and im getting the whooping cough one :( wahhhh
Belfie - i rehomed my dog a weekish ago. it was very sad, although i know i did it for the right reason also, its weird not seeing her around the house. im more worried about DS, he seems to be ok and occasionally mentions her name.
Hope everyones well. bloody hot here and the brain is frizzled. DS started childcare today so have some nice quiet housework time lol
-
thanks Buzzie & dory
The immunisations went ok yesterday. Mum held Isaac for me this time, but he still screamed but not for long. At about 4 am this morning I woke up to Isaac cooing and babbling.. very weird he never usually wakes up properly until about 8. Anyway, he reached out and grabbed my face and I noticed his hand was really hot, and so was his forehead, belly everywhere. I took his temp, but then at that crazy hour I couldn't remember what was normal! It was 37.8 and I didn't know if that was hot enough to give panadol so I had to get up and google.. one drawback of living alone I suppose, no one here to ask their opinion. I ended up giving him a quick sponge with a cool face washer, a bit of panadol and a feed and he was fine. Everything seems so much worse than it really is at that hour! I think it must have been from the immunisations.
Good luck to those of you studying, I really hope you do better than my effort. I am really struggling, and just can't get motivated to do it. The times that I set aside for assignments always get interrupted, and I'm really considering not continuing just yet, but when Isaac is a bit older. I need to do something I can get motivated to do, and possibly to make some cash from so I'm either going to start sewing things to sell, or sell prints of my photos. I started a photography fb page, can I please ask a favour and ask you girls to 'like' it? I want to get as much feedback as I can to see if my idea is realistic or not. If it's not I'll get the sewing machine out!

Hi everyone,
Dory - Chloe went ok at my mums this week without me from 8:30 - 4. She drank 100mls from the sippy cup in one sitting and then about 30 mls before I got there - they gave up with that one. So a little better than last week when she only took about 20 mls all up. Nice work with the MRI too. FX you get the results you want from it
Connie - Chloe holds onto the handles and puts the spout bit in her mouth. We have to hold the end of the bottle to keep it there though. We put her on a towel and she wears a bib because she spills a bit too. Mostly out of her mouth. I think the brand we got was MagMag
Bec - I was showing DH our photos the other day as they are really good and he said 'wow she has a great camera' which translates to yes you take a great shot. And he does wedding photos etc too. Why dont you combine the two? Sewing and photos. Maybe make a cool kids book for Isaac with photos and things sewn into it that he can grab?
Buzzie, Belfie - I got confused with my last post and thought it was Buzzie who gave up her dog but it was Belfie. Now I realise it was both of you! So hard and sad. I had a WEIRD dream about my dog last night. I dreamt I was breastfeeding him!! eeeeewww. And I was worried what people would think because he is such a big dog - not because he is a dog!! ha ha
AFM - not much going on really. Chloe still wakes at least twice a night but I am used to it now so thats ok. She is rolling and rolling and rolling. So much so that I cant just leave her on her mat anymore without watching her. The other day she ended up half stuck under the couch. Oh and she has started doing a weird thing with her mouth - sucking in her lips and blowing out at the same time so her cheeks puff out and she goes all red. Funny. She has just started grabbing her feet too which is cool. DH's bday today so going out for a fancy dinner and have my sis minding Chloe. Hooray!
Hi to everybody else!
-
Oh Connie - thanks for reminding me.... I finally remembered. Oh bugger forgotten.... hmm.. HYDE, Chris Hyde. Phew I remembered.
Fuzzy - too cute about Chloe - all of her antics. Hope your night out was good & happy birthday to DH.
Bec - well I did it. I visited my mum all by myself and Hannah ended up with a stomach ache and woke crying ( screaming in pain actually) a few times...and had diarrhoea ( so far none today FX) but my mum kept me company during the middle of the night, which I didn't expect but it was nice. We went and had a nice breakfast by teh sea, but I didn't go for a swim, it was a bit wild ( maybe an effect of the cyclone?) Though as a result of a long night and driving home yesterday I am really fatigued today. Just about to have a nap. Bring it on.
Buzzie - sorry you had to rehome your dog as well.
Beflie - how are you going superwoman?
Hiya to everyone else.
-
PML Fuzzy - i read an article about a lady who breastfed her dog.. omg yuk... i feel sorry for the baby that had to share the boob!! :o
Bec - i think all bubs are different withy comforters, DS never had anything. he just didnt attach to anything no matter what i tried. with Bella besides her dummy, she LOVEs grabbing her clothes and blankets so i got her a blankie thing with an animal head stuck to it.. like a lamb with a cloth body. i know a friend who had one and her daughter loved it so i tried it and Bella loves hers. Though now someone has given us a very soft doll and she LOVES that and cuddles it. I was told her holding skills are very advanced so i figure she is ready for that stuff, so dolly goes everywhere with us now :D
hi everyone :) I still cant believe how quick all this is going! today in the shops i had Bella in her hugabub and i always rub her bum and it feels like yesterday i was rubbing my belly just the same.. :)
DP and i have had so many conversations about another bub and in tassie he almost started conviencing himself he was happy with 2, though on the way home he said he would like one in 3 years. SO glad he changed his mind or he would of stuffed up my holiday LOL we also spoke about getting married too, so that was exciting.... but we have said we want to buy are first home when i go back to work, so between a house and marriage that should keep me busy before the next bub :D Now i just sit back waiting for that rock!! PML
Wonder how many more babies there will be from this group.... i think 99% of DS group have since had another one also.. :D
-
fuzzy - aww thanks, that's nice to hear your DH said that, being a photographer and everything. I don't actually have a great camera, it's just an entry level DSLR. Nice to hear someone thought it was a good one! Hope you had a nice night out, and Chloe sounds so cute doing her new things! Isaac is still waking at night too, but more than twice lately. I just discovered it's been a wonder week so I'm hoping that's why.
dory - well done, I'm glad you did it and were fine with it. Sorry to hear about Hannahs tummy though, but so nice that your mum got up too.
Buzzie - hehe I find myself doing that too, it's just like rubbing my preggie belly. I can pretty much guarantee I'll be one of the ones who doesn't have another baby, not that I don't want a little brother or sister for Isaac though, but it's a bit hard to see it happening. Even adoption etc (I'd love an African bub) is hard if you're single, let alone actually conceiving.
Today has been a bit hard. A friend of mine is going to Tanzania next week and is going to pass on some photos of Isaac to David (his father) for me. Trying to choose the first photos he will see of his son was so much harder than I thought. That was the first thing that made me cry. Then child support agency rang, and asked twenty questions about David so they can track him down, that made me cry too as I imagined Isaac asking me the same things when he's older. So anyway that combined with some other crappy things meant today has been just awful, hopefully tomorrow is a better day.
