Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes for Missy E. She had a wonderful day, the presents were a hit and we had lunch with the grandies who came up with the disembodied Barbie head goods which was (as anticipated) a huge hit.
Trill I hope Chewy manages to worm his feral way into your cold hard heart LOL. Kangaroo care is supposed to help with the mummy's bonding as well pmsl. (Cat lover here).
Arte, wow cute little puppy - so tempting but good call, it would be terrible timing. The party sounds awesome, love your icecream cake idea. I tend to overcomplicate things.
Cass, the ulcers sound awful. Glad to hear that she might've turned a corner. Are you using an acidophillus powder in her food/drinks at all? Could help restore some balance.
Cally, my DD1's parties always involved very sensible menus but i'm afraid the standards have slipped a bit since then (along with everything else like how much tv she watches and screen based games LOL). But I always put out real food (home made mini pizzas, dips & celery etc, fruit kebabs) before any sweets come out and we usually don't have lollies although I'm tempted to go the coloured popcorn this year. Maybe I'll just get the sweet-salty one instead. I'm not game enough to serve something like red cordial though...esp once they get a bit older and the parents start doing the dump and run. That's an awesome riding effort! What size bike is it?

Md - no idea on the size, it was the one that she was in the middle of the range for on the chart in KMart!! I think DH needs to put the seat down a bit more though because she can only just touch the ground and is relying on the training wheels to balance when she gets on which won't work in the long run.
I expect parties to have some bad food, but not even a bit of watermelon or something really turned me off. A fruit palte is pretty easy and at 4 they're still going to go for that (or at least I think K would - she was wandering around at one stage though with a cupcake in each hand so I may be wrong.....)

MD: so happy that Miss E had a splendiferous day! where did you find the barbie head thingy? i reckon that could be a chrissy present in this house :think:
Cally: yeah i would of thought that it was fairly normal to have fruit and some healthier options available at birthday parties...but then i do remember my parties as a kid and i dont really remember any healthy options....the whole lolly overload can get to be a real problem once they are at school and start getting invites to all their classmates birthdays (at least, this is what my friends with older kids have been lamenting to me about).
AFM: good news is that Leila is def on the mend. DH has just taken her and Marta for a play at the playground (Marta recovered fairly quickly and has been fine for a few days now...thank goodness!). me, on the other hand still feel like i came off second best to a semi truck lol. but i am feeling marginally better than yesterday...although, today i got greeted with another visitor...AF!!! wow, so weird! i havent had her show up since early December 2009!!!!!!!! it's almost like a second puberty hahahaha!

Wow Cass that is AGES to not have a period! In my experience, there is a flood of invites for their first year at school then it dies off which is great! I remember when E was in Kindergartgen she had 3 parties in a week once! So good to hear that things have turned a corner at your place too :hug:
Cally, party food isn't rocket science is it? I don't get why people think they have to only serve up ****ty processed food at parties. When E had her birthday party I had fruit diced up in the tupperware party dish thing with all the compartments and one girl pointed at the watermelon and asked what it was! I was really hoping she just didn't recognise it because it was cut up LOL.
MD that sounds like a lovely day! Chewy was purring this morning when I picked her up which was a bit cute, but I refuse to let the cute invade this cold black heart LOL.
In the end I just got A a leapster 2 and 3 games from the target sale (Did I already mention that? Can't remember now LOL), some thomas books, some more train track and some nerf guns. Went for lots of smaller things this year instead of a big present.
Oh, I forgot to say ages ago that we took the training wheels off A's bike. he took to it pretty easily. The other kids were spewing though that they were a lot older before their training wheels came off though LOL. We noticed that when he rode he hardly needed them so we just took them off.

The kids brought their NAPLAN results home today they both did really well! L (yr 5) got a band 8 for reading, band 7's for persuasive writing, spelling and grammar/punctuation and a band 6 for maths. E got band 5's for reading and grammar/punctuation, a band 6 for spelling and band 4's for maths and persuasive writing. I know it's only a snapshot of what was happening for them on the day of the tests, but they are still excellent results - especially L's. He also had his reading assessment done today and at 10.5yrs old he has a reading age of 14yrs 4mths!

Trill, it wouldn't surprise me if the girl didn't know watermelon. We made burrito's at kindy and I was amazed at the amount of kids that didn't recognize capsicum etc (some didn't even know lettuce!!) but the teacher said it was very common. Although I don't know if my kids would know a watermelon - I don't like it and never buy it.
We got the kids Nerf guns for their birthdays (plus some parent ones :)). They are only the bottom of the range ones that were on special for $10 but they have been great fun!
Cass, glad that L is getting better. I hope you have yourself pumped full of every pro-biotic/vitamin/folk remedy on the market to get yourself back to health.
ETA, Trill, I don't know what the levels are, but it sounds like you should be very proud of them :)

cass- glad to hear L is on the mend. i think its been a terrible year for sicknesses this year. will be glad to see the back of it!

i bought a pram off ebay (crazy, i know!) i can't believe I'm still buying baby stuff after all these years but since I've sold my double i have really missed being able to go out for walks. this way J and i will be able to go out together when L is at kinder. dh is going to pick it up now so i hope its good!
i got offered a job for next year doing sessional teaching at a uni but i just don't think i can manage it logistically. its v frustrating, i really wish i had someone who could look after the boys once a week. would be kinda nice to dip my feet into the real world a bit but i don't think its going to happen.

G, it will be easier once J is at kinder too and you know you definitely have those days free to work somewhere. What type of work was it?

the problem is that J will only be going to kinder for 5 hours at a time- which is not enough time for me to work anywhere iykwim?
the job is as a sessional tutor in the education faculty. they only hire experienced teachers and its all word of mouth so its pretty cool. you even get paid $40 an hour to do marking! unbelievable!!! i think I've just gotta wait it out a couple of years and then see what is around....

Well my sister is pregnant - due in March, 10 days after my other sister's wedding, so she'll be going with the empire dress option when we go dress shopping next week! Even though I suspected it, it still kind of took me by surprise. My reaction was very different to last time too, I suppose then it was all the excitement of knowing we were going to have two little kiddies only 6 months apart. Miss K has decided she wants her to have a boy and has decided that Mr Tickle is a boys book and has put it by the front door ready to take up to Canberra next week.

Cass - so glad that everyone is on the mend, hope you feel better too soon.

Gosh Cass that is a long time with no AF. Glad L is on the mend, now you just need to get plenty of rest and sunshine yourself. x BTW we found the barbie head thingy at Kmart, $19 (BARGAIN). Although I'm pretty sure I saw some fancier ones for a bit more a few weeks ago, my parents had trouble finding one. There were some horrid bratz and moxie doll ones that cost a LOT more (wouldn't have thought the extra skank factor would be worth that much LOL).
I'm not convinced that not being able to name a fruit or veg is evidence that the child has never encountered it before. I ask E sometimes what different things are and she doesn't get it right every time.
Well Arte, I'll be in the air for a few hours tomorrow morning (heading to Canberra for work) so you've got to keep your legs crossed until my plane lands ok? LOL Seriously though, how are you feeling?
