Md- we easily filled the container, which was fantastic. It is still in the shipping process. Believe it or not it can take 6 months to get it through customs. We are still not clear if we will be charged import duties. The final cost will be the determining factor in the decision to do it again or not. We'll be there at least another year, not too sure when we'll come back. When I can't stand it anymore no doubt! Lol.
I caught up with the lovely Ginger and her rockstar.I have to say, he is amazing. He can tell you any number you point to, counts to 100, knows all his letters by sight. I tell ya, the kids amazing! Must get it from hs mum. ;)

MD, I am totally amazed that H is so big now!!
JM, the school W is going to was 'modernizing', so they were getting rid of the old desks and chairs - instead of doing anything useful with them, the caretaker was unscrewing all the metal bits and burning them!! It was so totally wasteful :( One of the kindy teachers kept going over for rescue missions and was leaving piles of chairs out the front for people to take home. I went over and got a school desk and a chair for each of the kids. Makes me wonder how many schools are just dumping their old stuff when it could be sent to somewhere that could use it :( Good on you for organizing the books, I am sure that there will be a lot of grateful children and parents.
Think I found the source of the power leak. There was a random patch of warm floor in the lounge that we wondered about, then there was also a dial on the wall that we thought was something to do with the diesel heating. Then a power guy came out to check why the night rate meter was whirling around so quickly and we discovered the 'pit heating' was the problem. Don't know why we didn't think that the mystery warm spot was controlled by the mystery dial directly above it!! Anyhow, back in the late 70's, a 'conversation pit' was all the rage - a recessed pit in the lounge with seating in it. Our has long since been covered over but there is a slight raise on the floor where the old edge would have been. So we have been heating that all month - at around $3.50 per day!!
Arte - one of the places we lived in America had a 'pit'. It was down in the basement and we just had heaps of cushions in it and used to go crazy diving into it. Had orange shag pile carpet. Glad you found the power leak fairly quickly though.
How old would you let little ones be before leaving them at a birthday party by themselves? Miss K is invited to one on the weekend and I've got no idea if they're expecting me to hang around or not. I've never met the parents (sounded lovely on the phone) and would hardly recognize the little girl.
Did a training day today, including a personality test. I was totally Introvert, not one single point for extrovert. Anyway, in the careers section for my type it recommended Engineer. So I made the right decision there!

I am never sure with the birthday thing. I know that W still won't stay anywhere without me, but A just had a playdate with her friend across the road and I barely got a wave goodbye. I think at the ones I have been to recently there are some parents that stay and some that drop off. That is helpful isn't it lol.
Trill, how time flies - I can't believe how old your kids are getting! Re DH away - had a long stay in noncopingsville at the start of the week. :( Extreme fatigue, took to my bed for a couple of hours on Sunday, good thing my girls didn't burn the house down because I would've slept through it. Then had a very bad day on Tues (complete with crying in the toilets at work) which culminated in what turned out to be a migraine but was freaking scary at the time. But I did some more reading and the exhaustion/extreme depression thing can apparently be a pre-migraine (prodromal) thing, makes perfect sense because I really was not myself at all that day. Anyway DD1 was a hero, she got DD2 through the rest of the evening routine, read her a story and tucked her into bed etc.
LOL Cally at your new phone misadventures, I think we all have those. PS I think you could have added "or statistician" to your list of recommended careers LOL.
Re the party - I would not leave a preschooler alone at a party, unless it was a family member like my sister or something. Even in prep and grade 1 there were some parties where parents would linger, but by that stage I would just ask the party hostess. FWIW a playdate is quite different (and less fraught) then a party when there's so much more going on and so many more kidlets running aroudn all junked up on sugar.
JM, that's fantastic that you filled the container! I hope you sneak it through without any costs - but if not, make sure you shout out on FB or something because I'm sure there are many (me included) who would love to help out.
Ginger's little rockstar sounds awesome - not surprising cos so is the rest of that gorgeous little family!
Arte - relieved for you finding the power leak. Ironic really that your underflooring was toasty warm while you were all freezing your tushies off. BTW I went to schools (built in the 70s of course) that had conversation pits in some of the classrooms! I learnt to sing Bananas in Pyjamas in one of them! You should soooo excavate and resurrect that baby!
Arte: I am with MD on that one lol!! resurrect the pit!!! i went to a 70s era built uni in brisbane and they had reading pits full of cushions...i actually quite liked it and felt rather decadent reading my chomksy there...

At this stage i prolly wouldnt leave DD1 at a party with ppl i didnt really know. Even with people i really knew well i prolly wouldnt....sugared up DD1 is uuuuggggglllly lol.
MD: i get totally emotional and crap to be around before a migraine hits! the thing is that i get them so rarely these days that i forget the 'signs' and just assume it is because i am not coping in general.
BTW, i love that your DD1 can read Miss E stories and tuck her into bed :loveshower: the power of siblings hey?!
AFM: pretty good here! marta is looking apocalyptic with a bad reaction to mozzie bites :( pussy and everything...eeewwww. We are, despite that, having loads of fun. no major family battles...yet :) i reckon it has something to do with having our own place this time (DHs dad has a 3 bdrm apartment spare....just lying around...as you do :rolleyes:). the only thing i can really complain about is the bad plumbing. BUT i do concede that when the building and the surrounding streets etc were built there *might* not of been running water (renaissance era...15th century :lol:).
the girls are going to bed super late most nights, around 10pm, but it works well with the lifestyle here as there is sun until 9pm. we go out for gelato in the evenings most nights and invariably there are musicians hanging around playing music so the girls eat the sugary goodness and dance it out of their systems...the other good thing about them going to bed so late is that they dont get up until 10am lol.
Cass, that sounds like my kind of routine!! Glad everything has been going smoothly, you do sound like you're enjoying it an awful lot after the soulless concrete jungle! That's interesting what you said about the emotionality before migraine - you would have to be having them pretty frequently to remember that it was a sign... and even if you did, is there a way to stop it from coming on? (Cancel all appointments? Take to your bed?)
ETA - now I want gelato. In a piazza. On a hot summery italian night.
Cally, I'd be hanging around at the party. especially if you don't know them. At least long enough to get a feel for them anyway.
LOL at the conversion pit Arte! They are pretty cool though. I guy I went to school with had one at his house and when we were all there hanging out we felt like real grown ups :lol: We had a similar mystery switch in our house too - there was a fireplace that we knew had been boarded up as the chimney was falling down, but there was a switch on the wall next to it and we never thought anything of it till we could hear this insane humming for days and we realised that one of the kids had turned this switch on and it was a fan in where the fireplace had been. When we had the power re-done we got them to take it out and put a regular powerpoint in there instead.
MD, that would have been really alarming! I hope it doesn't happen again :hug:
MD: nah, no great tips on how to avoid them i'm afraid. mine was/is old injury related so i would try to minimise pressure on the shoulder (that was bung), but ultimately, once the path was set for a migraine that was it :(. just gotta ride it out. my best migraine coping tip is a dark room and complete stillness. as in, tune your inner zen and lay there like a rock lol. make sure that intermittently you gently release the muscle tension in your body that creeps in with the migraine...that for me, really helped make it last a bit less.
MD, hope it was just a one off :( I have had a few migraines, certain they were hormonal because I only ever got them when I was on depo. Like Cass, the only thing I could do was slink off to bed and not move, the very second I felt it coming on. But yay for H putting E to bed!
Cass, can you get any bug sprays that are suitable for kids? Are they getting attacked at other times or just in bed? Bedbugs can cause reactions like that too. Hope you can find some way to stop it.

I would so love to restore the conversation pit! The kids would absolutely love it! Can you imagine - duplo in there, ball pit, cushions and beanbags - that would be the best thing ever!
Erin is still sick, night 4 now. Hopefully the vomit is over but she is still unsettled and hard to get to sleep and won't stay asleep for long :( My biggest fantasy right now is a whole night of sleep lol
We are away next weekend for a test for my course - I am totally unprepared but the mark can count instead of an assignment so it is good to do it just to have the back up in case I don't get an assignment done. It is near my hometown so we are combining it with some visiting. Then the next weekend DH's parents are up so we are spending a couple of days in Rotorua with them and then they are staying here for a few more days. Should be good.
Well Arte, that's your new project: convincing your DH that convo pit is G.O. LOL Great idea btw to turn a ho-hum exam visit into all round visiting goodness! :) Good luck with it. I hope E is better much soon, poor little thing, and poor tired mumma too.
I'm not so worried about the migraine now, next time I will know what is happening so it will just be a case of riding through without the fear factor involved.
Having an ok weekend here. Took the girls to the local gemstone show today, E is very tired and whined the whole time about her sore feet (! What is she, a nanna?!) but they had fun selecting their own sets of chakra stones. Then after she went to bed H and I watched 17 again, gotta say it's a pretty funny movie mostly because of his nerd-central best friend LOL.
Has anyone been inspired by the toy sales? Putting anything away on layby for Christmas? E is desperate for a Lalaloopsy doll with the crazy hair.
I haven't worried about the toy sales for Christmas MD, but I did layby a tonka dump truck for both A and SIL's little boy for their birthdays in September.
The big kids are getting bikes for their birthdays so not getting much else. W needs to move onto a 16" and A is very keen for her own bike (with a seat on the back for her doll). I think we will just be getting W a decent waterproof watch - he has a $7 Ben 10 watch that he takes amazing care of, removes it every time it might possibly get wet lol. Also got a model engine kit that he and DH can make, it actually runs when it is completed. Apart from that it is just whatever the grandparents get him.
Don't think I can convince DH about the pit, and I sort of suspect the landlords wouldn't want us ripping up the carpet lol
I got the Aldi dollhouse and accessories the other day for birthday but no other toy plans at the moment. I've just looked through the KMart catalogue and thought it pretty uninspiring.
Well even if I had wanted to leave Miss K at the party yesterday I couldn't have as she was attached to me for most of the time. She is in her element at day care, but even though she knew all the kids she was completely freaked out. Wouldn't even sit down with them to play pass the parcel. DH was happy to have a quiet little child, but I think she was a bit extreme yesterday. Have just signed her up for dance lessons next term for exposure to people a bit more.
Arte - model engine kit sounds great. DH and Miss K do a Lego set every holidays which keeps them fairly occupied. Have a good little trip next week.
Cass - how are the itchies going? Poor little miss.
Argh! i will be missing all the toy sales! that said, last year i was so uninspired that i didnt take advantage anyway.
our plan this is year is a cosy coupe for Miss M and a Big Girl Bike for Miss L. That will be birthday i think....Christmas, my goodness...I have no idea lol.
Cally: the mozzie bites are still causing some issues as there are three that she keeps scratching. but the tea-tree oil i put on them at least got rid of the infection. so am hoping that this week they clear up for good.
Arte: ahhh, i forgot that you were renting the house :rofl: yep, landlord *might* freak about the pit resurrection lol.
MD: did i ever mention that i love the places that you take your girls?? man, i will say again that i wished we lived in the same town, i would have an outing buddy!
We got the report and discharge from the Child Health unit today. W doesn't present with clinically significant anxiety, nor any disorder or anything else they deal with.
The report didn't really say anything that we hadn't worked out for ourselves. But his behavior is alright atm so I guess we will just keep trucking on....
Meanwhile, how much work is a toddler!! I had totally forgotten but E is reminding me very quickly - wipes pulled out, cat tormented, doorways with steps. But OMG she is so lovely. She has always wanted to be a big kid - couldn't wipe the smile off her face at playgroup today when she was playing on the gym pad things with other kids.

Arte - how did you feel about the report? I guess since his behaviour has been ok lately it would all make sense, but did it shed any light on what might've been going on when you were having issues? Or have you worked out what might've been going on that was different then to now?
Speaking of behaviour, Miss E has been a real handful with DH away. She's been very hyperactive in the evenings. Part of it might be tiredness because once she gets into bed she's out like a light. I've even had to invent "Six oclock is sit-down o'clock" because I couldn't handle all the jumping on the lounge/dancing/running/jumping around that was going on. I even wormed her, yanno, for good measure. She's been unwell(ish) this week with a headcold, I wonder if that's got anything to do with it.
Cally, E went through a party-shyness phase there for a bit. Thankfully it has worn off now, but it took a while and a few conversations about how she was feeling (shyness, anxiety) and that it was ok and that the feeling goes away in a little while, etc. Lots of reassurance and prompting.
Re the toy sales - still haven't even really cast an eye over the catalogues yet. I usually plan ahead for christmas for the Qld nieces and nephews so I should get onto it. Arte, what size bike did you get for W? DH came home with a bargain-basement bike for E (it was on clearance) and i gotta say it looks like it will be too big for her.
Cass you can sooo come along with me to the gem and mineral show! Although be prepared for discussions about chakras and vibrations, rather than stricktly geological features... :p
