I hate the nets - they are just a big wind catcher and we have lots of gum trees over the back fence (including a massive one that overhangs the yard) so I can see it getting damaged very easily.
Arte - we never bothered with door locks either and the gate was only so that she couldn't go and wake up whoever was sleeping in that morning!
LOL Cally, for that reason I would have a gate!
Trill, do you actually like hangi food?! I suspect that the kids won't eat a thing and will end up with cheese on toast for tea lol
Arte, if it's smoky and ash flavoured they are doing it wrong! I've never had hungi food that tasted like that. Or do you mean a traditional one where they actually wrap the food in palm leaves etc?
Traditional-ish. Mostly the food is in muslin cloth. They call it an earthy taste, I call it dirt lol. Still in shock about the culture difference with the stuffing - I only use the butter to brown the onions and then egg to bind. They used 6kg of butter for a bread bin of stuffing and thought I was mental when I suggested using some egg instead.
mmmmm mm mmmm i LOVE a lovo (hangi). i have not eaten one that tasted ashy? but in fiji they tend to be wrapped in banana leaves with loads of grated coconut sitting on top of it all so that might change the flavour :dunno:
i would love to get the girls a trampoline but we just dont have the space really...it would take a large chunk of the yard up and restrict other games that they play. we'll just keep using the neighbours for now hahaha.
We have a trampoline... originally it didn't have the net attached, but in the new spot it's a little too close to the path for my liking so the net has gone back on. And yes we've had to replace it once (along with the mats) but it gets plenty of use so I don't mind, really.
BTW Cass, we have a small (10ft) round one, which is pretty compact compared to some of them.
I've had a hangi once, it was nice. My understanding is that the food is in with hot rocks (rather than the coals themselves) and it's all wrapped so no smoke/ash problems. My Dh's barbecue cooking, on the other hand....
School visit today! Miss E got straight into it. The teacher rang the bell for them all to sit on the mat and off we went. When I went to pick her up she was skipping (yes, skipping!) so I'd say that's a pretty good sign it all went well. :)
No plans so far for the weekend. Plenty of things we should be doing. Went shopping for a few summer clothes for E this afternoon but had a massive cognitive fart in the middle of target and couldn't work out what matched and what didn't, and while I was standing there in a daze trying to count how many things i had in my hand, E dived onto this couch/cushion display across the walkway, causing their stupidly placed ceramic christmas ornament thingo to smash (!). Tears and stares. Shopping FAIL.
The hangi was actually good! The meat was tender, the veges were good, it actually tasted nice! Yip MD, just the rocks go in the pit. Somehow the ones I have had before have still managed to taste like dirty smoke.
We did a mystery bottle auction, where each family donated a bottle and they were wrapped up and bid on. It raised over $300 and was fun :)
MD, hope you didn't have to pay for the ornament. My kids are such country bumpkins that they are wowed into submission in the department stores lol.
MD: So stoked that Miss E loved her prep orientation :dance: Miss L loved hers as well!
Oh man, i need to do a target run but am way too much in newborn mind-fry that the mere thought of driving to a major shopping centre, finding a carpark and then wrangling the kids just makes my blood run cold lol. i think i will also wait for my double pram to arrive...my girls need to be restrained otherwise they will be the ones not only smashing the ornaments but also mega fights and tantrums over those basket wheel things...i really really *dislike* those things now that i have a very headstrong 2 year old hahaha.
AFM: Miss L had her last orientation day today. i took her this time and it was really lovely to see her in her element. i still cannot believe that she is starting school...

Cass, W won a huge Steinlager, I got a lemon and barely juice concentrate but I traded with a 6 year old that was nearly in tears over his Stella lol. A got a bottle of chilli infused olive oil. There was a fair bit of beer and wine.
These kids are getting big so fast! Sounds like all the orientations are going very well.
Arte, I'm glad the hangi came through with its tasty goodness. :) FWIW you can go to the swishiest french restaurant and eat food that tastes like dirt (eg truffles), so you're probably doing haute cuisine at kindy without even knowing. LOL. The mystery bottle thing sounds awesome! What a great idea. I'm stealing that and using it first chance I get.
PS, no I didn't pay for the ornament. On principle. It was a stupid bloody place to put it. I'm pretty sure there's a consumer law rule about that. Plus Target can afford it better than I can ;).

Quick question, re wardrobe planning. How many/what sort of pieces of clothing do you set out to get at the start of the season? Given we're going into a long summer, and that it often involves water play and iceypoles and sand etc, I tend to buy a few more sets of casual clothes than I do for winter. Plus some of them you can add in leggings and cardies and extend for autumn. But I always wonder if I'm buying too much or too little or maybe just not the right assortment. (FWIW I suspect I'm slightly traumatised by DD1's complete disregard for dressing self so I get twitchy when shopping. haha). Tips?
I give up on W's clothes. He still has a drawer full of shorts he didn't wear last year that he can not wear again this year lol
But for A, I have so far gathered 3 pairs of shorts and a couple of skirts, a couple of designated kindy dresses (ie painted on lol) and about half a dozen tops - mix of short and long sleeve tees. I need to get some 3/4 tights for her to wear under the skirts and probably a couple of light jerseys too.
E has a few dresses and stockings and a couple of pairs of shorts but I probably need to get her a couple of tops.
I am off to the city on Wednesday so I will probably get them a few things. I tend to use the operational minimum because I hate spending heaps on clothing and then having lots of it sitting in the drawer.
Pet day has been and gone. Can't believe I have looked after those lambs for two whole months so they could spend 1.5 hours at kindy lmao! They were very well behaved though and didn't spook with all the strangers like I thought they would.
I guess they can go back to the farm any time now :( (but :) at the same time)

MD: that's the million $ question on the clothes! i like to have a good half dozen short-sleeve plain tees, that i mix up between target and cotton-on kids. cotton on kids tend to do nice simple tees with simple embelishments (like a bow or pockets). Bottoms tend to be a mix of jeans, leggings and shorts with only 2 or so skirts.
2 lots of sandals and about 3 slip on canvas shoes (but i get those from Kmart).
Arte: life with 3 is pretty good :) I mean, the newborn thing is total chaos and exhausting but i can see the payoff that a few months can bring IYKWIM. i have the big girls as the inspiration of how awesome fun it will be for all of us...feeling rather chuffed and content...and exhausted and emotional all rolled into one lol...aaahhh sleep deprivation!
Cass, glad it is all going well. I never had the newborn chaos thing - mine were all ideal newborns and slept best when they were new. Then I spend the next 1.5ish years with them waking every 2 hours or more lol.
Off to the city today to have my breast lumps looked at. They have been there for about 8 months now so I figure if it was anything bad I would be half dead already but I guess it pays to have these things checked. I am taking A for a trip, she never gets alone time with me - she either does stuff with W or with E but never just her so that will be nice. She likes to go to the shop. I am getting Christmas presents though, so hopefully she has a short memory lol.
And my glasses have arrived! I can pick them up while I am in the city :)

Good score on the clothes. My shop was a bust - only one tee shirt. Nothing was on special and I begrudge full price lol Bummer about the pram. Are you just slinging E for now?
Boob normal, just nodular tissue. I figured it was something like that, wasn't worried at all. Dr had the best monotone voice I have ever heard - exactly like a robot. Very impressive. And a student doctor who went to my uni at the same time as me for her first degree.

MD - you don't want to know how many clothes K has. I am quite a fan of kiddies clothes so can go a bit crazy.
